CNN’s Bill Hemmer
is leaving CNN according to NewsBlues. If this is true, I can’t say I’m surprised after the way the PR for the American Morning lineup change story was bungled and Hemmer’s subsequent comments…
UPDATE: Here’s CNN’s official announcement on Miles O’Brien joining Soledad O’Brien on American Morning; thus increasing exponentially the number of people who will think the two are related (they aren’t). The announcement also mentions that Jack Cafferty is being moved off the program to be on a new program called “The Situation Room” with Wolf Blitzer and goes into some detail on what The Situation Room is all about.
“The Situation Room” will be organized in three one-hour blocks: the first will focus on political news, the second on security issues and the third on world and international news. Blitzer will convene teams of CNN correspondents and experts to offer up-to-the-minute reporting on everything going on in the world.

I guess he couldn’t “take” getting a job change. He is much better in the field. And he’s not cut out for a morning show and not funny at all.

So Hemmer is out for sure? Should be interesting to see how this shakes out with CNN. Seems like they have been trying a lot of different things with not a lot of luck lately.
Comment by MrTony — June 6, 2005 @ 11:47 am
Thank god for small favors– there are few anchors as repellent as Hemmer.
Comment by mcf — June 6, 2005 @ 1:59 pm
Regardless of Hemmer’s talents, he was known. CNN losing him will be a big blow…I’m starting to wonder who they have left besides LK and WB that anyone would recognize.
Comment by MozillaGuru — June 6, 2005 @ 3:03 pm
It is a bad thing when the reporter/anchor becomes the reported. I liked Bill Hemmer and will miss him and I most likely will not watch Miles O’brien as he is not as likeable, in my eyes, as Hemmer. JS
Comment by Judy Stage — June 6, 2005 @ 3:15 pm
Maybe Jon Klein wants all the ones that have been around a while GONE. Changing of the guard so to speak.
Comment by Johnny Appleseed — June 6, 2005 @ 4:01 pm
I certainly hope Klein is not dumping Anderson Cooper. Should that happen, I certainly will be watching hockey( if they ever settle their contract) and dump CNN Prime Time. J
Comment by Judy Stage — June 6, 2005 @ 4:12 pm
Jonathan Klein would never dump Anderson Cooper - that’s his golden boy. Where have you been?
Comment by Sunny — June 6, 2005 @ 5:34 pm
Actually, I have read that, but believing JK is another thing. JS

This whole situation stinks. I love the AM show with the people they have. You’ll making a hugh mistake!!!! Also, how could you move Jack Cafferty, he is propbably the best thing that has happened to AM. Now I will be forced to watch local tv……Thanks
Comment by d rosana — June 13, 2005 @ 1:37 pm
Get rid of Soledad, or what ever her name is, and team Hemmer up with Carol Costello on AM!
I haven’t been impressed with Soledad from day one. Paula Zahn was much better in that role - which isn’t saying much. Hell, just get rid of the 2 anchor template all together and let Hemmer take the helm!
Comment by News Addict — June 14, 2005 @ 12:57 am
I liked Hemmer. Bad thing for CNN that is letting him go. But, we don´t know what is the real reason behind his departure? Was he just a “talking head” with out a brain?
Comment by Luis Velez — June 16, 2005 @ 8:10 pm
Good Bye Bill Hemmer….You will be missed.
Comment by Amanda Jackson — June 17, 2005 @ 12:06 am
HEMMER IS LIKABLE …SOLEDAD IS A LOUSEY INTERVIEWER AND GETS TONGUE-TIED CONSTANTLY .. JACK IS FABULOUS !! MAKE SOLEDAD THE COFFEE GIRL AND PAY THE REST WHAT THEY WANT.
Comment by rich — June 17, 2005 @ 9:46 am
I liked Hemmer. Best thing Solede ever did was take maternity leave. I was always shocked that she survived, She is sophomric. Carol Costello was better but… I even liked the anerexic woman, Daryn Kagan, who does the segment after American Morning. Oh well.
Comment by Rayk22 — June 17, 2005 @ 9:47 am
I soooo agree with the comments on Soledad O’Brien….what poor excuse for a news anchor. She is just AWFUL…..If CNN is looking for chemistry they should have paid more attention to the pairing of Bill Hemmer and Carol Costello. THEY HAD IT!!! Soledad is about as interesting as a wet rag……..She is the one they should have dumped. Proof once again that the folks in decision-making positions are just idiots!!!!!
Comment by kim r — June 17, 2005 @ 10:56 am
Bill willbe missed!!!!He and Soledad had great chemistry! How Can I watch am without Jack too? CNN you had a good thing why did you mess it up? News anbd entertainment way betrter than NBC,CBS& ABC. what are you thinking?

so sad today to learn that bill hemmer is leaving the show. where he is going and why. what an asset to your network. we will all miss him. good luck bill. your the only reason i got up at 7:00am. get rid of soledad. so boring. hope to see your beautiful face bill on another network REAL soon. best…….sarah
Comment by sarah berner — June 17, 2005 @ 12:20 pm
I will miss Bill Hemmer and I wish him well. I probably won’t watch the morning show now. Soledad and Miles seem like an odd pair and I don’t care for Carol Costello. I stopped watching ABC when she was on in DC.
Comment by Vicky Taheri — June 17, 2005 @ 12:47 pm
I was really disappointed to learn that Bill Hemmer was leaving just after Jack Cafferty. I watch the AM show every day, partly because I enjoy hearing what they had to say
about what’s going on in the world. Is something going on at CNN that two key people would leave so close together?
Does anyone know what either Bill or Jack will be doing next? I’d like to see what they will do next in their careers. The AM show won’t be the same. I’m not sure I’ll watch.
Comment by Chris Goodwin — June 17, 2005 @ 3:31 pm
I agree w/ the many emails, that cnn is making the biggest mistake!! Get rid of Soledad and Miles…BORING! Bill was AWESOME…and awesome to look at!
Comment by Michelle — June 17, 2005 @ 3:42 pm
Well, CNN just gave this loyal Georgia girl her final reason to turn from CNN to FOX. No Bill Hemmer, no me. ‘Nuff said.
Comment by Lynn — June 17, 2005 @ 4:04 pm
I’ve never written a comment before on anyone leaving a television program, but guess there’s always a first. The only reason I watch CNN is because of Bill Hemmer. I thought Heidi Collins was a definite plus while Soledad was on maternity leave. Anyway, I won’t be watching CNN anymore - not that anyone cares.
Comment by Nancy — June 17, 2005 @ 5:23 pm
I liked Bill Hemmer very much, Soledad is very intelligent, very serious, love Jack he is a perfect CNN Archie Bunker. If CNN starts having an outdoor audience, where we have to listen what city everyone is from, I’m deleting CNN from my a.m. line-up…..
Comment by Judy — June 17, 2005 @ 6:36 pm
I’m much in agreement with the majority. Hemmer gave the AM show a bit of professionalism. I’m sure he’ll be an asset to whatever path he follows. Soledad is the Jim Gray (obnoxious sports interviewer that turns up sometimes on Showtime) of morning news. Wish someone would tell her she’s not even as remotely attractive as she thinks she is!
Comment by Tom — June 17, 2005 @ 7:39 pm
I’m sad to see Bill and Jack go. They were like old friends. Soledad seems uncomfortable alot of the time and just isn’t enjoyable to watch. I like Bill’s interest in everything and Jack’s curmudgeonliness. This reminds me of when Bob Edwards had to leave NPR’s AM show. I guess it’s going to be Fox and Friends in the AM from now on, sigh!
Comment by Carla — June 17, 2005 @ 8:05 pm
Bill Hemmer is the best anchor person on Television. I was so disappointed when I learned today that he is leaving. He was the main reason I was a faithful CNN American Morning viewer. Time to try FOX. CNN has really blown it with both the Jack Cafferty and Bill Hemmer decisions. Sad day.
Comment by sheila — June 17, 2005 @ 8:10 pm
Bill Hemmer has class, professionalism, & stays on focus. Unfortunately, Soledad has none of the above. Bill Hemmer would be best matched with Carol in the morning and should not be blamed for “lack of chemistry” of the pair. It was Soledad who lacks….everything! You’ve lost one listener as of today!
Comment by Deb — June 17, 2005 @ 8:17 pm
I could not believe it this morning when I learned that CNN is dumping Bill Hemmer. What are they thinking? He is not only photogenic, but an award winning journalist. He has lots of personality, and I thought that his chemistry with Soledad was terrific. It was also fun to watch his reactions to Jack Cafferty’s commentary. I am sure that Bill will reappear soon on another network, but he was so good with the other people at CNN.
Comment by keith — June 17, 2005 @ 8:19 pm
I’m so upset!! I’ve been working a different schedule the last 2 weeks and just found out about Bill Hemmer leaving. What on earth is CNN thinking? They went from having the best anchors and shows to the absolute worst now with all their changes!! I’m so disappointed. Bill Hemmer was a huge asset, what a mistake! He is articulate, intelligent, personable, and extremely handsome! Hey Bill you can come hang out with me any day in Florida.
Comment by Deb — June 17, 2005 @ 11:18 pm
I woke every am to Bill Hemmer, I was so surprised and disappointed when today I watched him giving his last talk. What a mistake you all are making…He will be greatly missed and my tv will not be on CNN anymore. I will try to find Bill on what ever channel he may be. You need to drop Soledad and get Bill and Carol together. He was the best thing on that show along with Jack.
Comment by Barb — June 18, 2005 @ 2:21 am
BILL HEMMER HAD GONE AS FAR AS HE COULD HAVE GONE, AND HIS JEALOUSY/DISAPPOINTMENT IN COOPER’S RISE WAS KNOWN - NO ONE IS GETTING RID OF COOPER - THATS LIKE THE LINK TO THE TARGET AUDIENCE EVERYONE DREAMS TO HAVE - SYNERGY HAS POSITIONED HIM WELL WITHIN THE CORPORATION’S OTHER ENTERPRISES - KLIEN IS TRYING FOR THE “LOCAL” OR “REGIONAL” NEWS FEELS GOOD ABOUT - A HUGE MISTAKE ON A NAT’L LEVEL - MILES O & SOLEDAD O SEEM TO HAVE BETTER CHEMISTRY THO - AND MUCH THO I SYMPATHIZE WITH JACK CAFFERTY’S FINANCIAL NEEDS…CAN’T HE RETIRE?? GETTING HIM FROM AN INDEPENDANT’S NEWS DESK IN NYC WAS THEIR FIRST MISTAKE WHERE JACK’S CONCERNED.
BRIEN ANDO’BRIEN SEEM TO HAVE BETTER CHEMISTRY
Comment by JOSH — June 18, 2005 @ 12:15 pm
I’m sorry to see Bill Hemmer leave. Not only has he been very professional, but also nice to look at. It does leave one wondering just what CNN is thinking! I’m also sorry to see Jack being shuffled off to what sounds like a very boring corner. We chuckled over his curmudgeon comments on many mornings. Miles O’Brien may be okay but he and Soledad will make a good pair as both are not very interesting as anchors. I also agree with the comment that Soledad is not enjoyable to watch. I’ve not tuned in Fox News in the a.m. but I think I’ll try it. I fear that CNN will become a blah, blah, blah, blah network not worthy of my time.
Comment by Bev — June 18, 2005 @ 2:33 pm
The dumped the wrong anchor. Soledad’s best work was done while she was on propagation leave. Hemmer and Cafferty were the pillars of the show. Teaming Miles and Soledad gives you a good aerospace guy and a lousy news reader. I guess it’s time to try Fox.
Comment by Frank — June 18, 2005 @ 5:51 pm
I am so sad about the changes at CNN. Bill and Jack were the reason I turned the TV to CNN every morning. I will miss them alot. Thought that both left with class. can’t apply that term to Mr. Klien though. Why would someone in his position take such a cheap shot at his own anchor who has done such a good job? So in my household, we will switch to FOX until Bill lands somewhere. Best wishes to Bill and Jack.
Comment by linda — June 18, 2005 @ 9:05 pm
I am deeply disappointed in CNN for getting rid of many of their best anchors; anyone remember Leon Harris? I enjoyed watching CNN because it gave a thoughtful analysis of the news. Since they moved it to New York it just isn’t the same caliber as it used to be in my opinion. While New York is probably a good city; not all of the country understands their brashness. I will go back to listening to music in the mornings; forget the news. GOOD LUCK BILL; I FOR ONE WILL MISS YOUR INSIGHT AND INTEREST SO MUCH.
Comment by Nicole — June 18, 2005 @ 9:42 pm
oh I about cried when I heard that Bill Hemmer was leaving CNN. I agree with the above posters who said that Soledad should be the one to go. She just doesn’t have the personality to do that job. Bill was tough on those he interviewed. And if you want chemistry, try Bill with Heidi Collins or Carol Costello. I think that since Soledad’s contract won’t be up for a while, they couldn’t get rid of her. CNN has now lost one morning watcher. Good Morning America, here I come!
Bill, if you ever wind up reading this, my God Bless you in all your endeavours. I’ll be searching around hoping to see you on TV once again.

Comment by Deana — June 19, 2005 @ 12:43 am
CNN has been my network for years and American Morning was my alarm clock. Bill Hemmer provided the incite and analysis I came to trust in the mornings. Soledad was like a commercial break–gave you time to get another cup of coffee. I will watch the ABC morning show from now on. Soledad was a mistake by CNN that I could live with, but this thing with Hemmer (and Jack) forces me to change morning show. FOX is not an option. I guess there is always ESPN’s Mike & Mike in the Morning.
Comment by DeeDee — June 19, 2005 @ 6:59 am
Bill and Jack gone? Miles and Soledad now anchoring American Morning with Chad doing the weather? CNN is doing everything it can to dumb down to the other network standards and is doing a great job of it. So long CNN, you have been a long time friend, but I cannot follow where you are going. I am sad.
Comment by Scott Tolar — June 19, 2005 @ 9:38 am
Bill & Jack! - Early mornings on Canada’s west coast just won’t be the same without you! I enjoyed 15 years ON-AIR in radio and television and thoroughly enjoyed all your offerings, professional and most insightful. Carol Costello and Chad Myers also added to AMERICAN MORNING’s chemistry. No doubt Bill is destined for higher and more prosperous terrain! Bill…..before your next gig….come visit Vancouver and beverages are on me!
Comment by Stan Kravetz — June 19, 2005 @ 7:45 pm
I don’t think the problem was Bill Hemmer, I haven’t like Soledad O’Brian since she came on the show. Very cold, no character.
Comment by Kathy — June 20, 2005 @ 7:06 am
I “peeked” this morning and sure enough- no Bill, no Jack. How sad. Do TV executives realize how upsetting it can be for their listening audience to lose a trusted and familiar news source? So I channel surfed looking for a new morning home. I still cannot figure what CNN thought they could gain by taking away what was working!
Linda
Comment by linda — June 20, 2005 @ 8:38 am
Bill…enjoy your summer. Hello again, Good Morning America! Fox is not for me. CNN’s loss will be another network’s gain. Bill let us know where you will be in NYC! Good luck to you and God Bless.
Comment by Maria — June 20, 2005 @ 12:11 pm
Somehow, I managed to miss the news that Bill Hemmer and Jack Cafferty were leaving CNN, so I got a rather rude awakening this morning at 7:00am. I was annoyed when CNN dumped Hemmer and Kagan for Paula Zahn, who was just awful. I was glad when they brought back Bill Hemmer and added Soledad O’Brien.
I actually enjoyed watching Hemmer, O’Brien and Cafferty work together at first, but Soledad’s ego has gotten way too big. Everyday, she becomes more and more like Katie Couric, who is an idiot. Frankly, all she does is ask long, stupid leading questions, so the audience knows what she’s thinking and not what the interviewer is thinking. I guess I won’t be watching CNN in the morning anymore.
Comment by Janene — June 20, 2005 @ 12:37 pm
What CNN does best is news. What American Morning provided was Early Morning News, and then with wry wisdom, Jack Cafferty made sure we wouldn’t take news “too” seriously. Is “American Morning” going to be another network clone of a Morning Show. Let’s hope CNN has the intelligence not to let their show descend from the level of what they do best.
Comment by Skip Hamilton — June 20, 2005 @ 1:48 pm
I was so upset Friday morning when I heard that Bill Hemmer was leaving! What a big mistake CNN!! I always woke up just to watch American Morning, but now everything has change. Where has Bill gone????? He was the best anchor person you had on that show. I hope one day to see Bill Hemmer and Carol Costello on American Morning they had chemistry when they were together. Big Big Big mistake CNN I will no longer watch!
Comment by Louise — June 20, 2005 @ 1:58 pm
I am not one who is swayed by celebrity, so these comments are not coming from a star-struck fan who only valued Bill Hemmer’s looks. His genuine ability to connect with people, the class he brought to all interviews, and the intellectual curiosity he so obviously possesses are the reasons I eagerly looked forward to spending a few minutes with him every morning. CNN has made a huge mistake, especially if they are interested in maintaining a loyal audience in the 30-35 crowd. Bill, God bless you…. you need to be in a place where your colleagues appreciate what an asset you are in any newsroom!
Comment by Shannon Freeman — June 20, 2005 @ 3:36 pm
A BIG mistake to let Bill Hemmer go. If you were looking for chemistry you should have paired Bill with Heidi or Carole. It was Bill Hemmer with his insightful and professional interviews that made the morning show different from all the other shows.
Comment by Linda — June 20, 2005 @ 5:09 pm
I just can’t believe that CNN let Bill Hemmer go. I think that
Soledad should have been the one to leave. Bill I’ll be
looking out for you on another network. Good luck to you
Bill wherever you may go. Until I find you on another network
I’ll be watching FOX NEWS……
Comment by Barbara — June 20, 2005 @ 5:56 pm
Soledad must have some dirt on a high ranking executive at CNN. Maybe it was a ’sexual harrassment’ scam. Somehow I knew that Soledad would stab Bill Hemmer in the back at the first good opportunity.
Even though I was never a big Bill Hemmer fan, everyone on the AM program seemed pretty capable and had likeable personalities…except the snippy little Soledad.
Comment by Tom — June 20, 2005 @ 9:12 pm
Is CNN not playing with a full deck? Bill Hemmer has charisma, personality, and charm not to mention his journalistic excellence. And Jack Cafferty”s barbs as well as his humor will be sorely missed. Soledad O”Brien is a persona non grata, devoid of talent in any direction needed to anchor a news show. I am one more fan to add to your list of “non watchers” since this agregious change.
Comment by Dorothy Loud — June 21, 2005 @ 7:44 am
I looked forward each day to seeing Bill Hemmer in the morning. Jack Cafferty amused me and challenged me with his so right on, dry commentary. For years I watched the Today Show and saw it become just another celebrity, new product venue. Then, I turned off the TV and listened to NPR every morning as I readied for work. Little by little I became a huge fan of CNN’s American Morning with Bill Hemmer and Jack Cafferty. This latest CNN shake-up confuses me. I thought shoving Paula Zahn to heavenknowswhere was mysterious enough. The last straw will be when you do something stupid and put Anderson Cooper in a place where we can not find him. It is sort of like the grocery store….keep changing the location of the products so it takes a while to realize your favorite is no longer there.
Comment by Sandra Medsker — June 21, 2005 @ 8:33 am
I am sorry to see Bill Hemmer go. If it’s not broke to fix it. CNN had a winning combo with the talent they had on then show. Sound like politics to me. I will miss Jack too. I will most likely have to find another news show to watch. Give it a few months and CNN will pull the carpet out from under this new show too. I would have thought that the other talent had some loyality to Hemmer, they all seemed to like working with each other and even hang together after the show.
Why did you not create a show for Bill and Jack ?
I will miss CNN American Morning Show. CNN you broke it.

Comment by Ricky — June 21, 2005 @ 9:04 am
CNN must be smoking something wild! Where was this team meeting when this decission to move Bill and Jack? Space! Where all the air is thin and distorted their brain cells. When Soledad was way on maternity, it was the best. I actually prayed that Heidi would stay on with Bill. Soledad and Miles are not the team for this show. Sorry, guys but you have just been put in a position by CNN exec’s that is marking your count down to days on the show. There is no way either Soledad or Miles can carry it and soon CNN will see that viewers will not stand for the lack of professionalism and control that Bill gave that show. Where is CNN’s award winning journalist now, what tell me they are sending Soledad (mother of four small children) to the front lines! I think we should all claim one week and not turn CNN on at all. Lets see if our voices count in their decissions.
Comment by Stephanie — June 21, 2005 @ 9:32 am
While I am on this band wagon, I am shocked on their decission to move Jack Cafferty. Okay, maybe a move within is natural, but no goodbye’s, no words to the public……..Jack you may have been called obnoxious but the truth hurts some, you were the words from my mouth so many times and I wish you all the best. I think there is a whole lot more to this move with Jack and Bill then what is before us. Good bye CNN- this is the last morning I will turn on your channel and my home page is not CNN either.
Comment by Stephanie — June 21, 2005 @ 9:55 am
What can I say that hasn’t been said? With Bill and Jack gone, Klein has succeeded in losing another viewer, not that he cares. On the positive side, I’ll be able to clean the cat’s litter box earlier…more important and entertaining than the “new” American Morning.
Comment by Mike — June 21, 2005 @ 10:22 am
I still can’t believe that CNN is so stupid to let the best two anchors in the news business go. Jack, whether you agreed with him or not, made you think and always provided a laugh to begin the day. Bill made the new exciting and interesting. I will be channel-surfing news stations until I find where Bill has landed. Good luck Bill and Jack. The morning’s just won’t be the same.
Comment by Sue — June 21, 2005 @ 2:17 pm
I am very disappointed to learn that Bill Hemmer and Jack Cafferty are being removed from CNN’s morning show. Jack, especially, was the one that brought a breath of real fresh air to morning TV “journalism”. I shall now go back to watching IMUS full time and look for Jack and Bill when they reappear. What is CNN thinking?
Comment by Steve — June 21, 2005 @ 2:49 pm
Yes, I will miss Bill and Jack,I hate Wolf and will never ever watch “the situation room” or what ever. Yall lost me forever the TiVo has deleted american morning.I agree that Bill and Carol Costello were great, as well Daryn and Bill. I was a long time viewer, but now I will go to Fox as well. Goodbye CNN
Comment by merrill — June 21, 2005 @ 4:35 pm
Bill - Can’t wait to see you on a new network! This is the last straw for me from CNN. What a shame that this network has so drastically declined. You got out at a good time and you will have a guaranteed following wherever you go. In the meantime, sit back, enjoy summer, and laugh at what Soledad considers to be “interviews”!
Comment by Ann — June 21, 2005 @ 5:48 pm
Day Two of no CNN American Morning for me. Having my morning cup of coffee before work with Bill and Jack on my big screen tv bringing the news and sharing a few laughs for the last 3-1/2 years, is going to take a while to recover from. Bill carried the show and is an excellent reporter knowing when to be sensitive, knowing when to be tough and knowing when we could use a laugh. Hopefully, it won’t take long to find him on another station.
Actually, if anyone has ever watched the morning anchor on Headline News, Robin Meade, her and Bill and Jack could start their own morning show and have awesome chemistry. That would be my morning news dream team. I guess the only way I’d watch Solidad and Miles is if I didn’t have to go to work and I wanted to fall back asleep in bed for a nice long three hour nap. I’ll be checking Fox News out for the time being. Best of luck to you Bill wherever you go!!!
Comment by Marylee — June 21, 2005 @ 6:02 pm
That does it for me, no more American Morning. Bill Hemmer AND Jack Cafferty. There’s nothing left to watch.
Comment by Joyce Zoumas — June 21, 2005 @ 7:28 pm
I don’t know what to say that hasn’t been said already. I’m a 58 yr. old female who has been a CNN addict, but I won’t be watching anymore. I’ve never liked Soledad and always wondered how she landed the job. I LOVED Jack Cafferty and Bill. They were the only reasons I watched American Morning. I was so hoping that Heidi would replace Paula. I’m not sure what I’ll be watching in the a.m., but it won’t be CNN.
Comment by Cheryl Franta — June 21, 2005 @ 9:01 pm
The only decent offer from CNN execs Bill got was Senior White House Correspondent? That seems like a step down for a news anchor. Bravo to you Bill for leaving CNN…there are bigger and better opportunities for you. Will certainly miss his upbeat personality. ~~ Disappointed in Canada ~~
Comment by Steve — June 21, 2005 @ 9:03 pm
CNN has fallen short with it’s morning programing, for awhile now. Why doesn’t John Klein, get some anchors with some personality. Who needs another morning with Soledad, giving me her Pro-Bush B.S. I’m sure Charles Barkley, and Daryn Kagen would be much better.
Comment by Tab — June 22, 2005 @ 12:23 am
I’ll never have to listen to Hemmer’s forced laugh again. Will miss him though, been a good few years.

I’d like to see Leon Harris come back.
Comment by GunnCat — June 22, 2005 @ 7:45 am
Actually a great morning show would be Costello and Chad. I remember when Costello reported sports on CNN when CNN used to cover sports. Chad seems more sincere than Hemmer, and they have great chemistry together. Soledad O’Brien; can’t say I ever understood her at all. Putting her on after Paula was weak.
Comment by GunnCat — June 22, 2005 @ 7:49 am
CNN American Morning, you have lost this viewer. What were you thinking??????
Comment by Karen — June 22, 2005 @ 8:29 am
I was a loyal AM viewer for years - I loved Jack’s curmudgeonly banter with Bill. The only change they should have made is replace Soledad with Heidi or Daryn - both of them can handle Bill and Jack smoothly. That would have been the perfect combo. Oh well, my wife is happy because I’ll get to the chores earlier now that the TV will be off.
Comment by Bill — June 22, 2005 @ 8:38 am
It is about time somebody broke this up. C’mon folks. Let’s face the truth. There was absolutely no chemistry between Soledad, Bill & Jack. You could tell that Bill & Soledad did not care for Jack and his hard hitting sarcasm in the morning. Whenever Jack spoke, they were sitting on the edge of their seats not knowing what to expect. You CANNOT run a morning team like that. It was obvious that Jack did not want to be there not to mention the bickering between Bill & Jack; you could see it. Soledad was constantly being the referee getting in between the two. Bill was pompous and a prissy. I would prefer to see Jack on in the afternoon in some political forum where he could launch his “bolts” of sarcasm and opinions. Unfortunately, I agree with you about Soledad. While I like her, she looks frumpy old school marm. She needs to clean up her act. Get rid of that Carol Costello. She is hard on the eyes and angry like she wants to fight or bite??. Give me Heidi Collins. Smart, pretty & sexy & can deliver the news. Maybe Heidi & Miles unless Soledad cleans up her act.
Comment by Mohawk — June 22, 2005 @ 9:01 am
Attention CNN: now that Bill and Jack are gone, so am I. It’s back to local news in my home in the mornings. Miles and Soladad are about as exciting as watching paint dry. Bill and Jack…I miss you both.
Comment by Susan — June 22, 2005 @ 9:05 am
Soledad got on my last nerve already last week when she so rudely attacked the parents who were very patiently and thoughtfully articulating their concerns about their daughter’s cancer treatment. Now, without Bill and Jack, that’s it for me and CNN.
Comment by Martha — June 22, 2005 @ 9:07 am
I just found this site, lots of interesting comments. I sent my feedback to the network, like that would make a difference, but I agree with many of the people responding here. Bill and Jack were great together, and I really miss Jack, a light on the dark side of news. I don’t watch afternoons, and really don’t like Wolf that much either. I agree that Soledad is a reader, no personality like Carol, she and Chad are great, even since she moved to NYC, and she did work well with Bill and Jack. I hate FOX, and I left GMA to go to CNN after Paula Zahn (another loser with a “look at me, I’m cool on my stool” attitude) left mornings. I will miss the show, I have turned it off after Daybreak after Monday. Bring me back? Hardly, unless they listen to those of us who are real news and show fans.

It’s a sad day when concern over ratings replaces people who I thought were very good at what they did (Heidi Collins, Bill Hemmer, and Jack Cafferty, with someone who constantly interrupts and giggles(Soledad) as well and Miles O’brien…it’s too bad that now the main concern has become ratings instead of quality broadcasting…You’ve lost me………………Ciao
Comment by Hope Waldron Samuels — June 22, 2005 @ 10:01 am
Well, I’ve been watching for years, Paula Zahn backed up by Hemmer was the best lineup. Soledad is very hard to take - tongue tied, scatterbrained, ugly clothes, and brattish. The network should have paired Bill with Carol Costello - they had chemistry - before anouncing Soledad. Now, I guess its back to Good Morning America. (I refuse to watch Fox.)
Happy Trails Bill, I’m sure we’ll see you again, maybe taking Rather’s spot…

George from Georgia, My wife and I was going to take a trip to New York just to peek-in-on the CNN NEWS TEAM of Bill and Soledad and Jack. We cancelled our trip and we won’t be watching CNN NEWS anymore, thanks for (F)ing up our vacation and our daily news program. No Bill, No CNN.
Comment by George — June 22, 2005 @ 10:37 am
I watch CNN for two reasons: the intelligence and sincerity of Bill Hemmer and Miles O’Brian…now, I’m torn. I can’t believe they’ve let Bill go but he’ll find his own path. And, I’m wondering how Soledad will hold up with the wit and brian that IS Miles O’Brien
Comment by Kelly — June 22, 2005 @ 11:04 am
Jack was my main reason for watching CNN in the morning. He has a way of showing what he thinks about topics and 99% of the time I totally agreed with him. His cynicism of the “reverant” was very humerous. I will miss him more than Hemmer. Soledad is a little too cutsey and prissy for my taste, so with Jack gone I will switch to Headline News
Comment by MCD — June 22, 2005 @ 11:38 am
I watch CNN almost every morning but somehow I missed the the exit of Hemmer and Cafferty. I certainly never heard any word that such a change would be taking place. Maybe I wasn’t paying close enough attention. I had to do a Google to find out what happenned. Hemmer knows the news, Cafferty is why I watched, Soledad is almost useless, Costello has chemistry in any setting. Miles works best by himself, especially when it is related to techno-mechanical details of a story.
To CNN: You probably could not have kept Bill. Things change. However, you probably should get out for a road trip like Mr. Hemmer is doing so that you, also, could familiarize yourself with the real world.
To CNN: I hope you’re checkin’ in

SAD that yet agin they have dumped what was there best..atleast jack had an opinion..Its like they want to be in a low qualtiy journalism competition with Fox…
I guess I am going back to reading the NY times.

Bill Hemmer was ok for that format. I wouldn’t call those positions “Anchor” positions. They are mostly “Moderators”, interviewers or Host. For the most part Carol Costello reports the News, but I do think they made a mistake by letting Hemmer go and replacing him with Miles O’Brien. I’ve seen some good reports by Miles on Aviation from time to time, plus the fact that he’s been with CNN as an Anchor in the Past. I think he use to Anchor a news Program on CNN in the afternoon before the last big change, about the time the brought in Paula Zawn.
Anyway, I don’t think the teaming of the two O’briens will last long. They seem to be getting along better with each passing day, but still they are not comfortable with each other. They wont get rid of Soledad since she’s one of Harvards top Graduates. NBC let her get away by not giving her a more permanent position (she was the Weekend Today Host).
But the Change that they made there and the Jack Cafferty move makes the show seem odd. It seems as if everyone was on pens and needles, and afraid to speak. They brought the 90second pop back today to try and fill some of the empth space, but with the “orany”Jack and his e-mails missing, the show is not the same. That part of the Show was key to the Shows success, but I think the main reason they moved Jack was to remove his e-mails. Because the ones he selected for airing were sharp, pointed, and critical on the subject, and they were sometimes Political. I think they will have to add that segment back, maybe not read by Jack, but the e-mails seem to measure the opinions of some of the Public on certain topics.

After reading these comments - its been years since I’ve been in the majority. Bill Hemmer was my favorite News Anchor and Jack was like getting up and having a cup of coffee with my DAD. Use to run 10 minutes late to work just to listen to Jack Cafferty at the end of the hour. Looks like I’ll be getting to work real early from now on. Bye Bye CNN.
Comment by Kathy — June 22, 2005 @ 5:34 pm
Thought Hemmer was on vacation…not fired. Had to Google to find out the NEWS!!!!Will listen to Carol and Chad then back to ABC and GMA…O’Brien and O’Brien are in the wrong place at the wrong time..and JACK will be JACK…Loved him for years and always will….too bad he is on in afternoon..what a waste!!!Can’t give up DR. PHIL… Bill Hemmer was great with everyone except Soledad….Soledad is void of a personality…I saw one 90 second pop with Soledad. It was a joke!!! I think she has missed her vocation…(a little bit of Jack(the truth)”Soledad is no Diane and Miles is no Charlie.” Can only take about 15 minutes of Wolf, Miles and Soledad with breaking News!!!!and Anderson is good in a hurricane. After a bit of time he actually sounds like a bad actor….A success show=Jack, Bill,Carol and Chad…
Comment by Betty O — June 22, 2005 @ 7:36 pm
I agree with all who are upset over Bill and Jack’s departures… I started watching CNN several years ago when I switched to satelite and was no longer to get my local stations. When Bull Hemmer came on AM this became the bright spot of my morning. I always hoped that Carol Costello would end up as his co-host as they seemed to have much more chemistry than Soledad. I just want to barf every time she says “vaca” for vacation…. grow up! And Jack, he may be a curmudgeon but at least he has has an opinion! Bill and Jack, you will be missed! CNN, you’re missing it..
Comment by Kim — June 22, 2005 @ 8:14 pm
I was shocked when I saw Bill Hemmer’s last day on CNN. He’s my favorite newscaster. I couldn’t believe it when they hired Soledad O’Brien instead of someone who already worked for CNN. It was obvious that she thought she was top dog on the show. I wonder how she got that idea. I never liked Soledad when she was on NBC, and I still don’t. I don’t like her voice or her laugh, and she seems very “pushy.” I would have liked to have seen Bill teamed with Heidi Collins or Carol Costello. I can’t wait to see him on another network, so I can watch him there instead of on CNN. I hope he goes to MSNBC. I will also miss Jack Cafferty. He used to bug me, but he grew on me. He has a good sense of humor and a good heart. Good luck, Bill and Jack. I hope to see you soon. I don’t know about watching the Situation Room. I like Wolf Blitzer, but why couldn’t they offer Bill Hemmer another anchor position instead of having a three hour show with Wolf. It looks like politics are at work at CNN.

I feel another large change is on the way at CNN. I doubt the morning show will stay the way it is. Personally I miss Miles in the afternoon and Wolf at Noon.
I could see Collins coming in at the AM spot, Soledad is just to weak without Jack or Bill.
I suppose we’ll be seeing some new talent in store soon.
I have to say that the morning shows loss isn’t nearly as disappointing as the end of Crossfire.
Cnn has no problem letting real talent go, Bill Hemmer being the latest in a long line of people. I don’t know what they do to negotiate for their talent either. Leon Harris leaving was by far the worst blow for the network since Bernard Shaw retired. There’s no strong male influence on the network with Bill leaving, with the exception of Wolf and Miles. I’ll never switch channels. Been watching 24/7 since the 1st Gulf War. Seen them come and go. It’s amusing seeing people post about this morning show which is just another in a long line.
For you old timers you’ll remember Hemmer without glasses and Catherine Calloway who always looked like she was on the brink of a panic attack :)

I am so happy to have found this forum. I, too, am stunned at the CNN changes. Soledada used to be funny with ANderson Cooper on the overnight gig on ABC. Carol Costello reminds me of Ann Curry on NBC,condencending and not smart (the entire reason I do not watch NBC AM) I will have to find something else to fill the mornings!
Comment by Colleen — June 23, 2005 @ 12:03 pm
I agree with Gunncat. I will never switch channels and have been watching CNN since the Gulf War. FOX is the biggest JOKE running. Couric makes me gag. Overall, CNN News shows are definitely going through some changes and you will see new faces. I used to wonder what the morning show ratings were. Not entirely anchors fault. Camera shots etc etc were always screwed up. As I understand, they have new producers now. I think Bill crossed a few Executives and ended up either being pushed down or out. This will happen when you tangle with upper echelon in Corporate America. I thought I read somewhere that Soledad is actually married to Miles O’Brien brother hence the same last name. Anyone know if this true? I could be mistaken.
Comment by Mohawk — June 23, 2005 @ 1:11 pm
No Jack Cafferty??? He was the only real reason to watch the CNN A.M show.
Comment by fagemia — June 23, 2005 @ 3:33 pm
CNN has every right to replace whatever anchor they want and we as consumers have the right to change the dial. I for one think that Carol Costello does an excellent job and doesn’t get enough credit. A team of Carol Costello and Bill Hemmer would have worked as would Bill and Kelly Wallace as would Bill and just about anyone other than Soledad.
Sometimes in life the wrong people go and the wrong people stay. Miles O’Brien seems like a nice guy but his comments today (23 June) about wanting to avoid being mugged on the way to work were inappropriate. He owes the good people of NYC an apology. CNN owes its audience a better explanation of its decision making process. Thank you.
Comment by Thomas Cooke — June 23, 2005 @ 5:51 pm
Someone cancelled their trip to NY because Bill Hemmer left? Get a grip! He didn’t cure world hunger. Bill Hemmer was always “okay,” but nothing dynamic. I also agree that he was great with Heidi during Soledad’s maternity leave. Heidi had the perfect combo. of intelligence to report the news, and “fun” to do the 90 second pop. Soledad giggles waaaaayyyyy too much, I agree. She severely annoys me now and I can’t watch her. It was painful to watch her with Bill Hemmer because she would always overtalk him and interrupt him and he let her do it. She was really rude, I guess thinking she was cute and that everyone was most interested in what she was saying. Leon was great when he was on CNN. He and Carol or Daryn would be great — or even with Heidi!

It is rather late this evening and I just returned home. I turned on cnn to hear that MY Bill Hammer has left the cnn morning show. This is quite a surprise and an extreme disappointment. When ever I traveled I could turn on cnn morning show and feel as if I were home because of Bill Hammer. Bill is quite talented and he is very pleasant to see every morning, well this is past tense. I am ruly shocked and the survival of the cnn morning show has lost another young professional viewer. I guess it is back to bbc because there is no more Bill. Bill I wish you the best of luck and I send my best to you.

P.S.: Cooper is very boring and Bill is very talented and lovely to view. I will miss him, his sweet smile and his kind heart. The cnn morning show will no longer be part of my viewing in the morning.

Replacing Paula Zahn with Soledad O’Brien is a disaster. I wanted Heidi Collins. The only reason I stayed with CNN in the morning was Bill Hemmer. Now that he is gone, so am I. I just read all 104 of the previous comments and CNN should take note of all those opposed to losing Bill and Jack. Can’t stand FOX News so I’ll just listen to music in the morning and wait for Diane Sawyer at 7:00. Get a grip, CNN!! Pay attention to your “former” customers!

I have to agree with many of these comments. The absence of Bill Hemmer on the morning show is a great loss to CNN. If CNN wanted to lower the axe on someone… why not Anderson Cooper the Dufus or Nancy Grace the maudlin, rude, phony, overly theatrical victim’s rights advocate.

I am so disappointed that Bill Hemmer is no longer anchoring at CNN in the morning. He seemed to convey genuine warmth and intelligence. Paula Zahn is such a classy, trustworthy bright star. I guess I am out of touch with the powers at CNN. Their morning news is so bland now with Soledad. Miles is a nice enough guy, but no Hemmer. I guess it is back to GMA.

What is going on at CNN. Bill Hemmer was wonderful. Such a star. Soledad is boring and so is Miles. I will no longer watch in the morning and am moving away from CNN more and more. Judy Woodruff was great. Heidi Collins was great with Bill and Jack. I don’t like the direction CNN is going. Maybe, it is time for a change at the top. Bill let us know where you are and we will watch.
Comment by Mary — June 28, 2005 @ 8:28 pm
Echo most of the posts here. I have been an ardent fan of CNN for years, but no more. The only reason I have tolerated Soledad and Carol was to watch Hemmer and Cafferty. Graduating at the top of one’s class at Harvard does not necessarily make one a viable morning anchor. Soledad is proof of that. Costello has an attitude that annoys me. Jack Cafferty was like having morning coffee with a crusty, opinionated, old friend. And Bill Hemmer is a true professional who delivered the news with intelligence and humility. Heidi, Bill, and Jack would have made a great team. Though I like Fox at night, I can’t stand the morning news show. Guess I will try local news for awhile. It can’t be any worse than the current CNN barf!
Comment by CB — June 28, 2005 @ 11:53 pm
Bill Hemmer was a stable, confident and credible NEWS anchor…. which is exactly what the CNN morning show needed. Miles O’Brien is an excellent reporter on scientific issues…but, he’s not who I want in my morning bedroom. It isn’t so much the people on American Morning…it’s the topical coverage, which is far too narrow. Every hour…it’s the same rehash. And, Jack Cafferty was just the antidote to the mundane morning script that CNN religiously adheres to. It was envigorating to hear Jack’s morning rants…even when I disagreed with him. He got things going…unlike ANY other morning show. With the departures of Hemmer and Cafferty, I’m now channel surfing…..and usually coming to rest on ABC. I consider this Good Morning America to be the “Donna Reed” of morning shows…..so, what does that say about CNN’s decisions to drop Hemmer and Cafferty? Soledad is a real trooper….but, she lacks the chemistry. CNN is going to fade fast out of the morning ratings…
Comment by Carrie — June 28, 2005 @ 11:57 pm
CNN was the only real news program (other than PBS Newshour) remaining on TV and Bill Hemmer gave the morning broadcast some real gravity–Miles O’Brien is lightweight fluff. CNN’s sttempt to be a clone of horrible Fox has left serious news consumers no choice but to turn off the TV all day and read “The New York Times.” TV is quickly fulfilling its prophecy of a “vast wasteland.”

Anderson Cooper is the biggest idiot on the face of the planet…ooops…second biggest next to the village idiot we have in the White House. You kept a dolt like Cooper and get rid of Hemmer?
I didn’t think it was possible. Congratulations CNN you just made me a FOX viewer.
Comment by Connie — June 29, 2005 @ 11:46 pm
I agree with most of the posters above…it’s back to local news or ABC for me. Soledad is a stuck up whiny complainer whose best days were during her maternity leave. Heidi Collins, Kyra Phillips or Carol would have been far better changes. Miles is nice enough, but he startes to grate on you after a while and he doesn’t suffer fools gladly, so how long before he starts patronizing Soledad with her phony earnestness.
I never liked her even back in the days when she as a tech show reporter for MSNBC…she just doesn’t connect with the viewer in my opinion. Heidi, Kyra or Carol have talent, are bright and approach interviews and reading the news with a respect for the story. Soledad is too interested in injecting her emotion and her personality into the story. And as far as Bill Hemmer, could you find a nicer more compassionate guy who is not only a class act, excellent reporter, but also a really decent human being. I will miss you, Bill. And so long CNN in the morning.
Comment by Jo — June 30, 2005 @ 1:24 am
The replacement of Bill Hemmer will certainly be a mistake
that will eventually haunt CNN. I thought Bill delivered the news with intelligence and style. Although Soledad is likeable, she does not appear to have Bill’s confidence with the camera, guests, as well as subject matter.
Comment by Larry — June 30, 2005 @ 2:49 am
what is going on? Cnn has lost a wonderful broadcaster in Bill. I will never watch the show again. Imus here I come! Soledad and Miles are about as interesting and watching a chicken cross the road. Bill we will miss you in Virginia. I was a loyal viewer for several years . No more.Cnn hasn’t thought about it’s viewers and the trust we viewers pppput into a newscaster. Well, I will move on as well.

I missed the farewell on June 20. Then lo and behold I saw 2 O’Briens. All this time I was still looking for Hemmer. Well now I undertsand he left CNN. My comment is brief, American Morning was the best with Bill and Paula Zahn. Now it’s heading for failure and it is just plain simple boring with the O’Briens. No chemistry is the problem. As for Jack, when he was there I never understood his role but now I do because I miss him. To CNN, it seems your 25 years of celebration may just be your last years!!! Do something. As for Cooper, I am not sure why they keep him!!
Comment by Noni — June 30, 2005 @ 12:25 pm
I was never a huge Hemmer fan, but I read a lot about him and tried to give him a chance. Same with Soledad. In my opinion they both leave a little to be desired, but why doesn’t CNN poll its viewers to hear what they would like before just dumping people? There are things Soledad and Bill could do just a little differently to be more likeable. And while you’re naming who you’d rather have as replacements, does it HAVE to be a man and a woman? I’m all for a pairing of Heidi Collins and Carol Costello — they’re both great. Definitely will miss Cafferty though. I always got the feeling that he and Hemmer really despised each other.
Comment by Noralee — June 30, 2005 @ 1:24 pm
Some executives are making mistakes that could cost CNN dearly. Their job is to attract and retain the viewing audiences. That will never happen with O’Brien & O’Brien. Maybe some replacements are due in the executive offices.

I echo the comments above CNN American Morning will fade into the dust now that they have removed the only intelligent and funny anchor they had, Bill Hemmer. He has class, smarts and carried the show. Jack was a loose cannon, but added a witty edginess to the show. They are wasting their time with Soledad. The new lineup is bland, and lacking any creativity. Too bad. They lost another viewer.

Here it is July 4, evening here in Japan. Because I missed a couple Anerican Morning shows - it comes in night time here, I, too thought Bill and Jack were on holiday. I liked the team of three, but somehow Soledad, whom I like but … just looks lost without the the other two; Miles ok but not dynamic. For me, Bill was an excellent reporter, knew when to be humorous, when not. Jack was outrageous - I didn’t always agree - but loved him on the show.
Lou Dobbs, hmm. Get tired of his tirade about exporting America. Paula is too confrontational and acts like she knows it all. Anderson stutters too much. Chad, Heidi and Carol will be my reasons for watching CNN. No that’s not right - CNN is the only full time American program I can get with my cable server in central Japan. And even if I could - Fox - NEVER.
Comment by Gloria Bauer Ishida — July 4, 2005 @ 8:51 am
It’s amazing to me that any of us have comments about staffing and hiring decisions. None of us knows the real Bill Hemmer. I absolutely loved him as a news person, but I knew he would have trouble because I couldn’t figure out if he had credibility of he was just down right cute. As for Soledad, I think she is the most professional person on air. She’s obviously bright. The woman is a Harvard grad. As for Miles, he’s a little to pushy for my taste, but I respect what seems to be dedication for his craft. Jack Cafferty is too opinionated for a news show, but guess what I’m not the boss, and for all we know these people could be hell to manage. But I have to say this about Anderson Cooper - how on earth could anyone possibility think he has credibility. I often said he must be someone’s son because he comes across as a babbling idiott like Katie Couric who is the most overrated and overpaid person on television. In any event, I wish Hemmer well and I trust CNN to make their own staffing decisions.

The only reason we have been watching “American Morning” was Jack Cafferty; not Soledad, who was an improvement over Paula Zahn, not for Bill Hemmer, and certainly not for “90 Second Drivel”. Are you practicing age discrimination, still trying to get the 18 to 25 age group? Soledad is as irritating as Katie Couric, and just about as smart. I have always wondered why she is the anchor instead of Cafferty. The show was at its best when she was on maternity leave.
Comment by Bill Hogarth — July 4, 2005 @ 5:12 pm
Jack Cafferty was an anchor in the 70’s in my hometown- des Moines, Iowa. He was great- also real good looking. He had too much talent to stay in this size market. It has been fun watching him flourish. I absolutely loved him on American Morning. More than a few times, I left for work late because I wanted to catch his next segment.
If Jack or Bill ever visit this site- take care and lots of us are waiting for your next act.

Bill Hemmer replaced! I am so disappointed. You are the greatest, Bill - an honest, interesting, and informed newsman. What is wrong with CNN. Miles O’Brien seems stiff and uncomfortable as an anchor and Soledad O’Brien is terrible as she trips over words and bungles stories. There is absolutely no chemistry between them. Bring back Bill and team him with Carol Costello. And no Jack! I am watching a different channel in the morning.

It is sad to have Bill Henner leave CNN. He was a solid base for morning news and entertainment. He blended with the talent of others in a complimentary manner. It would be nice if CNN could match Bill Hemmer with his own program - on an open news program -

O’Brien & O’Brien aren’t what CNN was created for. They are News-lite at best. I’m with those who liked Bill Hemmer and Heidi Collins. Jack Cafferty was a cynic’s cynic, which puts him at the very top of my list!

“O’Brien and O’Brien” are a bland, dry toast and weak tea breakfast. “Bill and Jack” were Belgian waffles, whipped cream, and strawberries exciting! If CNN is this profoundly CLUELESS about the most-important meal of the day, I think I’ll pass on their lunch and supper as well. I think somebody needs to fire the front-office cook.
Comment by Peggy — July 5, 2005 @ 12:43 pm
Yikes–I was on vacation and return to find Bill Hemmer is no longer anchoring CNN in the morning. Even more disappointed to find Jack Cafferty gone. I loved the synergy between Jack and Bill and everyone has someone at work like Jack and he gets you to thinking differently.
The CNN morning show just isn’t the same. I’ll keep looking for Bill Hemmer on one of the other networks. He’s first-class and deserves to be on the air!
Comment by Sheri Rochford — July 5, 2005 @ 12:55 pm
Now that the CNN American Morning line-up has changed — there’s always Fox News Channel. Without Jack, Bill and the question of the day, CNN sucks!
Comment by Zack LaMack — July 5, 2005 @ 1:29 pm
I, too, had to dig to find out what happened to Bill and Jack, thinking I slept through their announcement of extended vacationd. I followed Soledad over, then got hooked on Bill and Jack. I do like the 90 second POP. I got bored with Matt and Katie, but the current CNN just doesn’t cut it. I am a working woman and woke up with CNN in the morning and got my news and entertainment there. I finally got tired of waiting for Bill to come back from vacation, especially when no mention was ever made of him, so I decided to try to get some answers. Sorry, but I am sooo disappointed and will look elsewhere, hoping Bill will show up on another morning show.

To Whom It May Concern:
American Morning brings the world to me every morning while I work out in my gym. Bill Hemmer, Soledad O’Brien and Jack Cafferty comprised a unique team of opposites that harmonized in such a way as to structure an energetic and stimulating program. I am terribly disappointed that you let Bill Hemmer go. His charming personality and handsome smile brought class to American Morning; this dynamic anchor will be sadly missed. I am sure that the future holds amazing opportunities for this young man who will continue to be an icon in the news industry.
Although Jack Cafferty’s demeanor was often controversial, it was refreshing to hear his clear-cut and down to earth points of view. Even though I did not always agree with him, his observations prompted me to reconsider my stance on diverse subjects.
I’m sorry to say that American Morning has lost its sparks. It is just one more news program.
Sincerely,
C.S. Cantú.

My goodness, it’s back to the Today show for me. I really enjoyed Bill Hemmer and Jack Cafferty. I do not like the new O’Brien and Carol Costello was a wonderful partner for Hemmer. Too bad CNN has made ALL of the wrong decisions. Amazing!
Comment by Sheldon — July 6, 2005 @ 9:44 am
I cannot believe that Bill Hemmer is gone but I shouldn’t be surprised - instead of a Class Act like CNN was when Ted Turner was in charge, CNN has become a loser - they have shown no loyalty to any of their news reporters - I will miss Bill Hemmer and only hope CBS goes after him. He’s got the right stuff and even the over 50’s like me love to watch him. I will be watching CBS local and morning report from now on.
Comment by D Richardson — July 6, 2005 @ 10:30 am
I was very upset in early June when CNN took Bill Hemmer
and Jack Cafferty off the American Morning Show (they were
a great team). They always got my day off to a good start.
I have tried watching the new set-up, but it just does not
work for me…CNN News Staff you goofed up real bad on this one…Soledad look’s like she has lost her two best friends. Good luck to Bill and Jack…They will be missed !!!

I’m back to the Today show. I sometimes flip to CNN and it’s painful to watch Soledad and Miles try to pull off the show. Hopefully Bill will land somewhere soon. I miss my friend. I will TIVO Jack in the afternoon. Other than that CNN has really blown a great thing.

I have been searching for news on Bill Hemmer and just found this site. I watched CNN for the last ten years to find out what is going on in the world.
I would watch other channels, but always came back to CNN because I thought they were mainly factual and many anchors didn’t seem to have an ax to grind. Then I got “hooked” on Bill. He came to interviews prepared, respectful, gracious but not pandering. Good questions with good manners. That is certainly something that Matt and Katie don’t know about. Dan, Tom and Peter all had there axes out there grinding. Bill had chemistry with several anchors and didn’t hog the screen. I liked him with most of them. He could “save” most of them from themselves. I think he was best with Heidi. Second best with Carol.
The evening news was a story by Anderson Cooper, retold by Paula Zahn, examined by Larry King and then beat to death once more by Aaron Brown. The AM was the only show that was fresh, live and entertaining.
Let me know where Bill will be, that’s where I want to be.

I missed Bill Hemmer and Jack Cafferty’s final day. I have been trying to figure out where in the world they were and why they weren’t on the CNN morning show. The show isn’t the same without them. It is absolutely dead now! Jack Cafferty doesn’t belong in the afternoon. His directness kept the morning show alive. I hope Bill Hemmer is enjoying his rest and gets picked up fast by another network who will appreciate him. Miles O’Brien is does not have the spark of Bill Hemmer. CNN is losing big time!

CNN doing hurricane coverage with no Bill Hemmer. Chad is great on the beach, but he needs Bill. CNN….swallow your pride and bring back BILL. This new line up is bad. Miles is good, Soledad has not gotten any better. She cannot conduct an inhouse interview, and you insist on allowing her to do remote interviews. The puzzled looks on the interviewees would make a great booper video.
Comment by DeeDee — July 10, 2005 @ 9:33 am
Miles O’Brian and Keri had great chemistry.
Bill Hemmer will be missed. Try MSNBC.
I agree with all about Soledad. She is too rigid. She should be home with her babies.
CNN put a little thought into your changes. You have reacted rather than make a thoughtful change.

Please bring back Cafferty and Hemmer to the AM morning show. Heidi and Carole Costello are much better than that stiff Soledad. She must be replaced but again, please at least bring back Jack!
Comment by Mary Lou — July 10, 2005 @ 6:18 pm
Bill Hemmer was the best!!! He had the looks, the smarts and such an easy way about him that put you at ease. If there is any justice he will land one of the anchor jobs at CBS, ABC or NBC. He would fit that bill (pardon the pun) to a tea. Go Bill!
Comment by Alan Hollingsworth — July 11, 2005 @ 8:05 am
The chemistry of Bill Hemmer, Soledad O’Brien and Jack Cafferty is what made this show work. That’s gone now, and so am I.
Comment by Cameron — July 11, 2005 @ 9:24 am
Miles O’Brain okay, but Soledad, continues to be a reader with little or no personality. Hedi Collins and Miles, Kera and Miles. That is a better combination.
THE BETTER EXECUTIVE DECISION WOULD BE FIND BILL HEMMER.

I am so glad my husband found this site while I was getting dinner ready last nite. I took the time to read all 172 comments and I am happy to see that other people feel that they have lost and old friends!!!!
The only comment I did not read about Bill was that he was a gentleman. As so many of you said he always was gentle in the way he interviewed. He was a wonderful gentleman.
I e-mailed CNN on the American Morning website on June 29th and got the return form letter that they cannnot answer every e-mail but they do read them. We should all e-mail them every AM with our comments. Maybe theY will get sick of us and do something!!!!!!
I wish could switch to Fox but my Cable Service in Ma. does not carry Fox News. I only have CNN and CNBC. I will not watch Katie. Soledad is A KATIE WANT A BE!!!!!
What were the over paid idot’s thinking!!!! I miss Bill and Jack and wish them Good Luck. I hope Bill does replace Dan at CBS!! IF CNN IS READING THIS THEY SHOULD FIND BILL AND PAY HIM TO COME BACK!!! JACK SHOULD BE BACK AS WELL AND CAN SOLEDAD AND REPLACE WITH HEIDI OR DARYN!!!

I like Miles O’Brian but that whole CNN AM Show has lost it’s zip. I think it is the loss of Jack but I also miss Bill Hemmer. Why would you mess with the a show that out shown the network morning shows?
Comment by Judy Schehl — July 11, 2005 @ 6:47 pm
I liked everything about the old American Morning lineup. Soledad was the weakest link, but played OK off Bill and Jack. Now the show is just blaaaaaaaaaah. I think that the reason Jon Klien has been so verbal about the two O’briens in the past week is because he knows he messed up and is trying to “spin”. Now if CNN wanted to make some REAL news- they would admit they misjudged their audience and get Bill and Jack back in the morning. I absolutely would not leave for work in the morning til I got briefed by Bill and caught Jack’s question of the day. Now I am just channel surfing.

I am all the way in the Caribbean…the island of Jamaica and I usually watch CNN American Morning most mornings. I really enjoyed listening to Jack Cafferty and the entire news package. And I really thought Bill was doing an excellent job…as everyone has said, he had a gentle, warm style, very good questions, boyish good looks …a real treat to watch. I am so disappointed that the entire morning programme has been changed. The current combination is ordinary and boring. Come on CNN….I thought you were sensible…why are you going back to boring and ordinary…anyone can do that….Bring back the original programme with the original combination of people…it was worth watching then….I think the world has spoken…bring back Bill!!!!!
Comment by Racquel Chambers — July 12, 2005 @ 3:48 pm
Oh I am SO delighted to find this page. Soledad O’Brien is a passable substitute weekend morning anchor in a small midwestern town, she is not a major cable network news anchor. Jack was enjoyable. Carol Costello is amazing - she is together, articulate, and alert but not creepy that early in the morning. Bill Hemmer is a little stiff, but what do you get first thing in the morning? He’s fine, he just can’t carry a show. Bill, Carol and Jack would have been a very watchable group. I think CNN is more interested in O’Brien’s resume than her ability. Soledad seems 10 paces behind - that’s the last thing you want to see when you wake up.
Comment by Lakat18 — July 12, 2005 @ 9:08 pm
Well 177 comments and still going. I am sad to see Bill go and I’m sure that CNN could have built a much stronger program with him still in the anchor chair. But you need to look a little deeper than just this one change. Since the CNN networks have come under wing of Time/Warner and AOL it has been on a steady decline, moving away from news to entertainment. Just look at the 25 year programs that have been airing none of them involve any of the talk programs other than the Larry King show, that’s because they are all so very forgettable. News in not the focus of the new owner. Proof of this was the departure from My Time/Warner cable system of the following networks CNN FN, CNN International and CNN World News. Headline news once a place to quickly catch up on news is now an evening gag! The point of CNN was News, hence the name Cable NEWS Network. Well maybe there is still time to lobby my congressman to keep funding for the CPB, thank goodness for NPR. Good luck to all the great news men and women who are now missing in action from the former CNN.
Comment by Sam Morris — July 13, 2005 @ 1:23 am
Sorry to see Mr. Bill Hemmer and Jack go. Why not just have Soledad and Cooper do the AM show. This way you can hand Fox the AM market and stop annoying viewers with poor decisions. It’s amazing how much money one can get paid to destroy a network that was once the leader in 24 hour cable/sat news. Miles O’Brien should simply retire and fly away.

American Morning is a thing of the past for me. Since Bill Hemmer left, it is so boring. I watch other channels now. CNN is going down hill very fast. I am no longer a fan. I watch Fox more and more. Soledad is so boring and Miles is too. What were you thinking letting Bill Hemmer go. Heidi Collins is good.

Let me start off by saying that I have been watching CNN everyday. I sometimes watch it all day long. I’m very shocked to see that Mr. Bill Hemmer is no longer with the cast. I feel like I’ve been betrayed by Mr. Klein. Sometimes I felt that Soledad was not very professional in handling her job as a news anchor. I feel like she is missing that spunk. But, I believe she did what she could.
Mr.Klein you have ruined our morning.

I’m feeling pretty stupid today. Day after day, I keep tuning into American Morning, hoping that today is the day that Bill & Jack return from vacation (I mean, what idiot would let them take vacation simultaneously anyway?).
Running short on patience, I did a Google search and discovered that Bill is on a permanent vacation and Jack has been shuffled off to daytime no-man’s land of television news.
I felt that team was a “symphony”, a sum greater than their individual parts. Now it feels like a clanging high school band.
I’m grieving.

I find myself turning to MSNBC for something of interest for my news.

Dear Mr Klein:
In my humble opinion you screwed up, as the above bloglog atests to. I have enjoyed watching American Morning with Bill and Jack, even my cat Sylvester enjoyed Jack’s humor. Now I have to watch a bland and boring Soledad and put with a disguntled cat who just wants to eat! Please reconsider and bring in the dream team of Bill, Jack and Heidi.
Comment by Karl — July 13, 2005 @ 9:33 pm
I too missed the departures from CNN of Bill Hemmer and Jack “Curmudgeon” Cafferty. The open on-air bickering between Soledad and Jack progressed occasional sparks of conflict to awkward embarrassment. Soledad’s interviews too were an embarrassment. Her questions seem superficial and often leading. Frequently she answers her own questions before her guest can respond. I hope that Bill lands in a happier place. To have watched him develop as a newsman and anchor, first here in Cincinnati and then on CNN, has been interesting. His ability to convey the news and to conduct interviews has grown over the years. He gets the story while treating the source with respect and objectivity. I will miss him each morning. I hope his new job will be accessible here in Cincinnati.

Absoulute stupid move on CNN”S Klein by letting Bill Hemmer go. With Hemmer gone I will be watching other news casts. I think Hemmer would be an excellent replacement for Dan Rather at CBS news and Soledid O”briens (give us a sense phrase has got to go) Good Luck to Bill Hemmer, he can do a lot better than CNN
Comment by Herb — July 14, 2005 @ 8:16 am

Comment by Debi Ensor — July 14, 2005 @ 9:53 am
Good move getting rid of the obvious right winger Hemmer, too bad they let him cover the elections first. Maybe a new day is coming where the anchors will be UNBIASED journalists? Wouldn’t that be nice? Those of you who are moving to Faux Newz should have been there to begin with. If you’re even considering watching Bush’s Friends in the morning, you obviously have no interest in actual news.
Comment by Derrick — July 14, 2005 @ 9:56 am
Whomever it was that decided that Soledad should stay and Hemmer should leave might want to consider handing in their own resignation. Hemmer is the best thing that ever happened to CNN. I wish him well and thank him for the many hours of pleasure he gave our family.

I’m sorry to see Bill go. I’m devastated that Jack is gone - he was my morning chuckle. Now, the program is a drag. I don’t watch it anymore. I watch Carol Costello (whom I think is great) on Daybreak and when American Morning comes on I hit my TIVO button for something else. Carol and Bill had great chemistry. Miles is boring and rude to others. I don’t see what he offers and he seems to be ’smelling his own fumes’ as my granddad used to say. Why does he think he’s so great? I don’t get it…

I, too, missed the announcement of Bill and Jack’s removal from American Morning, but the whole show has changed since their departure. No more Doctor Gupta, no more Emails ( don’t they care what we think anymore or are they afraid to ask us?). I have never liked Miles. He is an opinionated, egotistical ass. and Soledad is a weak Connie Chung want-a-be that should have been dropped a week after she was hired. What were they thinking, anyway, when they hired her. We live in Costa Rica and I used to get up at 5:00 just to watch the show. The chemistry between the crew was magical. I tried wathching the new format for two days and got so disgusted that I started watching HGTV. I have added my emails to all the others that have voiced their disgust but I doubt that anyone at CNN is listening. If they knew their audience at all or even cared about them they would never have done this. Have they never heard the saying, if it’s not broke don’t fix it. I suspect that their bottom line is money and Bill is one less big salary. Well there are two less viewers in this here and listening to our fellow ex-pats I suspect that they have lost most of their audience in this neck of the jungle. They had better pray for another world distaster to entice some back, but if they send Miles to cover it I will stick to HGTV. At least they know how to be objective.

I missed the announcement and had to google to find out what happened to Bill and Jack. I miss them both. I’m pretty left wing in my politics - liberal to the point of being borderline socialist - and I have to say that I don’t think Bill was biased to the Right. In fact, whatever his biases were, I think he pretty much kept them out of his reporting, and I respected that. I trusted his professionalism and respected his insight. Jack? Well, he was a dash of salsa; a person who would speak his mind in an era of corporate blandness and politically correct conformity. I will miss them both in my morning routine. I tried to watch the new morning line-up, but have to turn it off and listen to music. I never had any problem with Soledad, but my wife was far more impressed with her replacement when Soledad went on maternity leave, and I confess that there always seemed to be an edge between Bill and Soledad as well as Bill and Soledad with Jack. It was clear that there were problems, and still the chemistry worked. I agree that if someone had to go, it should have been Soledad, since it has become painfully evident that she is not capable of being the glue holding things together. Miles, sadly, is just boring. There’s something else, though, that is even more disturbing than the unfortunate shift in personnel - and that is the decision by upper management to focus on news as entertainment rather than news as a substantive and insightful exploration of facts and events. Since management changed, the tone and emphasis of CNN have changed radically. I used to be a CNN junkie according to my wife…now I tune in occasionally and inevitably leave disappointed. I have started shopping for another news source, but am afraid that I may have to rely more on print to find anything substantive or in depth. Goodbye, CNN. Good luck to Bill and to Jack.

I thought it was odd that Bill Hemmer was gone, I too thought he was on vacation. I think it’s sad that they kept Soledad and Miles. Soledad seems nervous all the time and Miles looks like a caricature of a newscaster that Phil Hartmann would have played. I think Bill Hemmer matched with a great wit like Pat Kiernan from NY1 would be the best. Pat is dry and really smart- Bill would be a nice complement with his sensibility which Pat lacks a bit of. Since NY1 is owned by Time Warner, it could work. I too can’t stand watching american morning anymore- I miss Bill.
Comment by Guy — July 15, 2005 @ 12:36 pm
It has been over a month since Bill Hemmer and Jack Cafferty left American Morning and the entire “chemistry” of the morning show changed (or should I say died). Which CNN executive made such an idiotic decision? Whoever it was should be fired! It is truly sad for someone like me who has been a long time loyal watcher of the show (over 4 years every morning) to see such a hemorrhage.
Bill was a true professional and handled a wide variety of situations and assignments in a way that made them interesting while maintaining the integrity of the story. His interviews were tough and probing. Jack was the delightful and funny “grumpy old man” that had no desire to be politically correct. He made me laugh, he sometimes made me mad, but he always made me think!
Soledad’s was best while on maternity leave. She is boring, self centered, snipes at others, and projects an “I’m too good for you” attitude that is grating. I was disappointed when CNN allowed her to return to the morning show after her babies were born. The show was delightful without her and either Heidi Collins or Carol Costello filled her spot with an energy & attitude that worked well. Even though she was the weak link, the show was still the best thing going in the morning as long as Bill and Jack were able to compensate for her.
As I said above, I have watched CNN every morning for over 4 years and often kept it on in my waiting room at work until after Daryn Kagan’s segment was complete. CNN has been part of my morning ritual so long it was automatic, at least it was until Bill and Jack left. I have tried to watch the new line up, out of habit and convenience, but I just can’t stomach the boredom. Miles is a nice guy, but he needed to continue covering aviation and NASA issues with some other “science/technology” stories mixed in. He doesn’t have the personality to “wake me up” and I just can’t cope with Soledad for more than a few minutes at a time.
Good Bye CNN American Morning. I’ll try to catch Kagan at 10 (EST) when I can, but I’m now shopping for a way to wake up and get my morning news fix. Any idea where Hemmer is going? Maybe that will be an option, but the blogs don’t seem to know where he will be just yet.
Comment by Cheree Culpepper — July 15, 2005 @ 3:44 pm
Cnn is now history as far as american morning is concerned. soleded obrien is repulsive–her nasel voice drives me nuts! and also her lack of talent.
I hope that Cnn will regret their decision, once bill turns up in maybe Dan the Rats place, or also a better decision to be the anchor on ABCs world News Tonight.
At any rate they should give solidad the ax!!!
Comment by john tunberg — July 15, 2005 @ 5:42 pm
Can I add my comments to everyone elses? I emailed CNN only today asking where is Bill Hemmer? I thought Jack was on vacation or something. The show has been missing something and that is what it is. It is not the same. They should have fired Soledad and brought in Heidi. The show was much better when Soledad was on leave. Soledad can read the news but not carry a show.
Like most everyone here, I will now be watching something else since they are not coming back.
Comment by Melissa D — July 15, 2005 @ 8:34 pm
You got rid of all the good people - bill - heidi - jack , and kept the worst{ Soledad|}. Goodbye CNN
Comment by Stella Smith — July 15, 2005 @ 10:25 pm
Really liked Hemmer -Soledad team and Jack– I no longer watch because I can not stand Myles—or that jerk Wolf Blitzer–or Harris on Saturdays—did not care for that Afro wearing guy or the hook nosed guy with the one liners, but cnn really screwed up a good thing by messing with Soledad show. She ll be next to go if they keep piling on the hours for stupid hurricane coverage and treating her as nothing special.
Comment by paul — July 16, 2005 @ 8:19 am
Soledad would be a nice addition to my bookclub, but i don’t think she world-class. Bill and Jack were the reasons we tuned in. I will just have to watch Robin Meade on CNN Headline news - she is fabulous!
Comment by Brigette — July 16, 2005 @ 10:06 am
I can only echo all the above comments. I really miss Bill and Jack. And Dr. Gupta’s gone too? This is the most phenominal self-destruct since the Dean Scream.
Comment by Jerry — July 16, 2005 @ 2:03 pm
I have not watched CNN since Bill Hemmer has been gone. If I have to experience a change of news people, then the news people I watch will be of my choosing. Mr. Klein can obviously do what he wants at CNN, but I don’t have to watch what is the result of his decisions. I cannot imagine why Mr. Klein has moved in this direction. Maybe he should find a nice set of identical triplets and use all of them on the same news program (American Morning with June, Jen, and Jean), as he apparently doesn’t think people enjoy a nice mix of personalities. Even Soledad has something to offer in a diverse group of personalities. Who at CNN is watching the hen house, while the wolf barks his orders?
Comment by Vincent Smith — July 16, 2005 @ 3:38 pm
Well I don’t feel so daft now after reading all your posts..
We thought that Jack and Bill were on holiday as well.
Decided to Google after seeing an add for the show WITH both O’Briens just a bit ago. I said if Hemmer were on Holiday he would still be shown in the commercial and off to search I went…
We can’t stand Soledad (I’m as bratty and phony as Couric.) at all..She is annoying, downright rude, can’t seem to ask hard questions and loves to kiss any actors you know what..It was heaven when she left to have her kids..Loved watching either Heidi or Carol while she was gone..Figured with 4 at home we had a good chance she would STAY home but no luck..
Jack..Oh dear, grumpy Jack..We loved your question of the day and your off the cuff comments..They always were thought provoking and the e-mails you read to us proved it over and over..Your comments hit the nail on the head constantly..If you are on CNN we will find you..
Hemmer..You were always a gentleman, with strong, informative questions. You have wit, intelligence and the ability to go with the flow..
Unlike Soledad who tends to get that deer in the headlights look at a crisis…
Miles does well with Nasa and Space stuff..I’ve always enjoyed his part in that but there is no way he will be able to ground that twit when she gets silly or flubs something major..Wonder what will happen the first time she pushes her hands into the face of someone not as tolerant as Bill and Jack have been??
We have been watching local while we search..Most likely we will go to Good Morning America..No Fox for us nor the Katie Couric gossip fest..
I don’t know what we are going to do without American Morning..
All the best Bill and Jack..
Missed in Ontario

I think it was a big mistake to let Bill Hemmer go. He had all the necessary qualities for a perfect morning show anchor. I really enjoyed watching and listening the show with Bill, Carol, Jack, Soledad, and Chad. They all had a special kind of obvious chemistry. It was a grave mistake to dismantle that relationship. Even a morning news show can be lively and exciting, which is what you had with the above-mentioned group. Bottom line… the show is not worth watching anymore, ITS REALLY BORING!!!! Big mistake guys!!!!!
Comment by Bobbye — July 17, 2005 @ 8:24 pm
I was apparently on vacation (June 20-July 4th) when Bill Hemmer was let go and I just got back on to watch again on July 5th. I have been watching for 2 weeks thinking Bill must be on vacation and then I decided to reasearch to see if I was right or if something was really wrong or if I could maybe catch him on CNN at another time during the day or evening….but according to this it is not to be. So I will change to MSNBC or local channels, I guess. I loved Bill!! Sorry CNN. Now, I am not interested in watching CNN anymore.
Comment by Marlene-Indiana — July 17, 2005 @ 10:07 pm
CNN lost the best two on the AM show. Bill & Jack. Miles & Soledad are too boring, especially Soledad. Bill Hemmer will do well with whomever is lucky enough to get him. CNN you lose and so do we EX-morning-watchers.
Comment by Judy — July 18, 2005 @ 2:15 pm
Life goes on. It’s been painful watching CNN for the past few weeks, but the format needed to be changed. American Morning is competing with ABC, CBS & NBC; not Fox. I’m sure CNN is willing to replace its viewers “willing” to watch Fox News with new viewers from the big 3 networks. The jury is still out, but I’m willing to give it a try - Step up O’Brien’s!
Comment by Charles — July 18, 2005 @ 3:21 pm
I changed my work schedule for a few weeks then thought Bill and Jack were on vacation. What a terrible shock! Miles O’Brien is as interesting as my coffee table. Soledad was bearable with Bill. American Morning is much too painful to watch without Jack and Bill. Good-bye CNN!
Comment by Lori — July 18, 2005 @ 6:37 pm
Bill is hottest newscaster out there then Anderson Cooper.
So sorry to see him leave CNN…… I hope Anderson is not the next to go. No more morning show for me. Maybe it’s time to try Fox.

Comment by Darren — July 19, 2005 @ 12:14 am
This has been painful I no longer watch American Morning for more than to check in to see if Soledad has been sent to the farm. Carole has been in for her yesterday and today and Carole always makes things seem brighter. One good thing out of all this is I am getting to my Health Club sooner than later now that I do not have the Question of the Day to look forward to.
Did notice that CNN is starting to run ads for Jack’s new show. But no start date is mentioned.
I am really lost so I just do not watch.
Comment by Mary Lou — July 19, 2005 @ 7:09 am
I just found out that Bill and Jack are no longer at CNN.. I have written you a few times in the past saying that Soledad should be fired as she likes herself too much and is a complete bore. I was hopeful she would stay at home and take care of her 4 kids as we would not miss her at all. She is not a good reporter and Bill and Jack were the “glue” that held the show together and now we have Soledad and Miles… what a boring couple to wake up to each morning… Heidi and Bill or Carol and Bill are the ideal reporters as Heidi and Carol both compliment Bill … Will I watch CNN any longer - no way. I am sure you will not miss one person but I do hope more people will not watch you all. I wish Bill Hemmer the best in his new endeavors and hope he gets a job reporting the news at the same time the exciting Soledad and Miles are on because many people will watch Bill. Good luck Bill - just waiting to see you in your next job….

I have to say the loss of Bill Hemmer is a LOSS for CNN I will be back on the TODAY SHOW. First Hiidi and now
Bill just shows the public how OUT OF TOUCH CNN is with the public. BAD MOVE GUYS!
Comment by Ray Sylvia — July 19, 2005 @ 1:38 pm
The choice of O’Brien and O’Brien is stupid beyond comment. Miles is so bad as an anchor that I am surprised even CNN can not see that. As far as Soledad is concerned she was awful of MSNBC and NBC so why did anyone think she would improve on CNN? Without Bill Hemmer and Jack there is absolutely no reason to watch American Morning so I don’t! Thank God for Headline News or I would go newsless until the evening. CNN is really falling over the edge into the big black beyong of news. I realize it has always been cable and not “national” but it used to be a good channel to watch for news, after all that was it’s point, wasn’t it? So how come the doofus running the show now does not know what CNN stands for? Good luck CNN, of everyone I’ve talked to not one person is still watching your network…keep this up and maybe you’ll just face away..but before you do, please take the ineffective O’Briens with you as they are so far beyond bad and non talented that I cannot find the words to adequately express just what a waste of time they are. Thank goodness for Carol and Chad, without them there would be no early morning news worth watching!

According to the Fox News Channel’s website, Bill Hemmer is now officially a member of the Fox News team.
Comment by Derek Ho — July 19, 2005 @ 8:32 pm
I enjoyed the unique combination of Bill Hemmer the bright-eyed, Jack Cafferty the carmudgeon, and Soledad the mediator. What was CNN thinking? To lose both Bill and Jack is a disaster! Soledad is not star material, but I enjoyed her in the context of the other two. Go figure. I’m liking the internet for my news more and more anyway.
Comment by Bendra — July 19, 2005 @ 10:01 pm
Well, what a coup for FoxNews. CNN hasn’t been the same since young Mr. Hemmer left the tube. I, for one, am happy to leave the boring American Morning show on CNN now that my favorites are gone–first Paula Zahn and Anderson Cooper moved to evenings, then Heidi Collins went away to who-knows-where, and now Bill Hemmer to FOX & crusty Jack Cafferty to afternoons. There is no “personality” left in the morning hours…WHAT WAS CNN THINKING??? Now that I’ve spoken my piece, I’m going to read the comments of others and await further word on young Mr. Hemmer’s new FOX assignment. And instead of making negative comments about those who still report to CNN, I’ll only say that Chad and Sanji are the best of those remaining, but they’re not on the show enough to warrant my continued viewing loyalty.
Comment by Juls — July 20, 2005 @ 12:39 pm
Bill Hemmer is going to work for FOX. Just read it on the FOX internetsite.
Comment by Danny — July 20, 2005 @ 2:00 pm
Checked message 226 on FoxNews.com and per message dated 7.19.05 Roger Ailes stated that Bill Hemmer has joined FNC as a daytime anchor and correspondent. Do not watch or like anything on FNC besides Greta Van Susteren, and she was a hold over from her show on CNN. I will definitely look for the show with Bill Hemmer as an anchor and hope it is less slanted than most FNC programming. It’s worth a try to see if Bill can make the transition from CNN to FNC without changing who he actually is and not become a shill for one position and opinion rather than an actual independent anchor and correspondent. Also watched American Morning to see if it was really as bad as I thought it was. This morning Carol Costello was co-anchor so that made it 50% watchable but Miles is truly awful. I wonder if he thinks he snide remarks and side comments are professional and what a co-anchor is supposed to do. It really makes his seem quite childish and unprepared or why would he resort to such unprofessional and childish behavior? Glad Bill landed somewhere and wish him all the success in the world at FNC.

You blew it when you replaced Bill Hemmer and moved Jack Cafferty. We no longer watch CNN in the morning at home or at my gym because we all hate both the Obriens.(yes we know they are not related). I tolerated Soledad when she joined Bill but now I would rather watch local news in the morning then these two poor substitutes . I used to wake up with Carol and work out with Bill but now I surf the local channels wondering whose bright idea it was to make these CNN changes.

How could you let Bill Hemmer go? It was bad enough when you brought Soledad O’Brian on board. JK has lost the respect of the people. I will never watch CNN again!!!
And what happened to Jack Cafferty? Give it up CNN!!!
Comment by Mr. Kim M. Bussey — July 21, 2005 @ 11:25 am
CNN AM has gone to pot. Soledad is more interested in doing the 90 second pop and finding out who is doing who. her ability as an anchor sucks. Jack and Bill were the show, she was the token female.
maybe your sponsors would be interested to find out you are dropping viewers at a fast clip. poof - you just lost another one, me

I’ll admit it - I went into this with an open mind but no matter how hard I try, I just can’t deal with the “O’Briens Squared” … and dammit, I miss Jack too!. Just consider me another in what’s turning out to be a long line of CNN defectors!

I think it was bad news when you let Bill Hemmer go and replaced him with O’Brien. Also a great loss when you moved Jack Cafferty.
Comment by Dick Wilson — July 22, 2005 @ 10:01 am
They made a big mistake pulling Bill Hemmer and putting on Miles O’Brien, Mile says uh, to much and is not that great, where did they find him. Fox is not my favorite station, but I will indeed watch Bill Hemmer. Why they wanted him off stunned me, I missed the last day he was there, and until I found this site, I did not know what had happened, I wrote CNN, they did not reply. I wish Bill all great things in his life
Comment by SONJA ROGERS — July 22, 2005 @ 10:28 pm
I also miss Jack and the three teamed together were fun and interesting to watch. Jack said so many things the way I felt them, he was funny, witty and yes, a good hearted grump, maybe Fox will call him, and pair him up with Bill.
So glad you have a place to let us say what we feel about our favorites, now I flip through stations, there is not one that I am crazy about anymore

I have watched American Morning since it started and now it sucks. So I channel surf.Bill and Jack were the best!Cnn you really need to rethink the morning show. Miles and Soledad are awful and boring. Maybe you can get Martha Stewart to do some cooking for them in the morning. She would at least generate some interest.I miss Bill at Land falling Hurricanes too. Well I won’t watch foxx so I guess It’s bye bye Bill.CNN u really need a new news team that is a lot more interesting than Soledad and Miles.Carol needs to step up with a new anchor guy.Maybe Carol and Anderson Cooper he at least has a personality.I’m willing to give CNN a chance to rethink this situation but don’t take to long I get bored easily
Comment by Susan Nicholas — July 24, 2005 @ 10:41 am
The new AM line-up just lacks energy or as the kids say “bling”. Putting Miles O’Brien in that spot under the circumstances was a disservice to him. He is a decent guy, but just not the Right guy for the morning news. The old line-up was great. It set just the right tone to get me up and started on my day with a smile, even when the news was grim.
Comment by linda — July 24, 2005 @ 1:14 pm
BIG mistake, CNN, letting Bill Hemmer go. What were you thinking? Bill brought professionalism and credibility to CNN - not to mention eye candy! He also drew in viewers in droves. That Fox has snatched him up is of no surprise. In a perfect world, he would have been paired with Carol Costello. Now there’s chemistry!! I doubt Bill would appreciate any smart remarks against Soledad and so I’ll keep my feelings to myself and close by saying Good Luck to you, Bill and I’ll be watching you over at Fox.

I did not learn until I read this that Mr. Hemmer and Mr. Cafferty are no longer with CNN’s morning program. I liked the entire group and found it a pleasure to watch them. I suppose in time that we will tend to like the O’Briens as much, but it’s just not the same. I am really sorry to learn that both have gone.

He’s not really going to Fox is he? That would be such a step down for a professional. Fox is entertainment, not news. I agree that Soledad is boring, but I like Miles. He seems a little more clever than the rest.
Comment by Grace — July 26, 2005 @ 1:18 pm
I can’t believe that CNN is that dumb.Bill Hemmer & Carol Costello would have made a great pair;Their personalities are like sunshine in the morning. Also, why not Jack Cafferty with them too;He was a great draw to the morning program with his off beat comments.Get rid of those idiot people at CNN that are destroying everything that was good on that network;Stop the placing of more of their idiot kind on programs that use to be good and entertaining as morning sunshine with the best personalities for informative news.Watching CNN morning show now is like a sour cold day flat & dull.Sorry CNN but you are loosing it;Your loosing viewers big time.Just about everyone I have talked to can’t believe that you would let people manage your programing that are that DUMB.I guess I will have to watch Fox.

We miss Bill and Jack. Didn’t know they were leaving. Didn’t watch everyday but looked forward to them and enjoyed when we did. Don’t like the O’Brien’s. Poor Carol Costello needs new makeup but we like her. Somebody needs to wakeup and bring back Bill and Jack and team with Carol.
Comment by Sandy and Billy — July 27, 2005 @ 8:59 am
Goodbye Bill..good riddance to bad rubbish. I’ve read the majority of comments here lamenting his departure and am shocked, although perhaps I shouldn’t be, at the number of people who consider him a good interviewer! Good lord..he (or at least his tv persona, not having met the chap) is the very personification of smug self-satisfaction and oleaginous ass-kisser. They just don’t come more plastic than that, ladies and gents. The best interview he ever did was with that kid in the bayou (if memory serves, or was it Florida?) who was attacked by a gator…Bill Hemmer at his tongue-tied best. He was groping so hard for his fake-caring act, it was hilarious!
JC meanwhile, will be missed from the AM lineup. And ditch that wall street mouthpiece with a lisp, Andy what’s-his-name. Soledad is there to fulfill the Latino quota, so she’ll be there for a while yet. What ever happened to the real journalists who were on CNN years ago when they first started up? Not telegenic enough for the masses?è
Comment by Andy — July 27, 2005 @ 10:08 am
Soledad O’Brien and Anderson Cooper are the TWO VERY WORST anchors on TV today. They are both over educated, narcissistic, twits. They interview themselves and constantly interupt interviewee’s with their opinions. Both are unable to talk without reading from a Tele-Promp-Ter. Put them on the same program and watch them scratch each other’s eyes out scrambling for “face time”. Just think, a CNN Jerry Springer type news program.

Goodbye CNN! You took a terriffic morning news show and ruined it. Bill, Soedad and Jack were the best there was and you messed with it. Miles is probably the most boring newscaster ever and I will be tuning into Fox from here on. If you wanted change you should have dumped Wolf who seems to think is is quite the man- so untrue! This is one move I think you will regret down the road. Soledad, start looking at your options because I feel you are next!
Comment by Susie Pasquinelli — July 27, 2005 @ 12:34 pm
With Bill gone, I have been sampling the other morning shows. I have to admit it, the Fox & Friends shows are pretty entertaining and, surprisingly, very informative with nice in-depth interviews. I suppose I had been indoctrinated with the “Fox is Far Right” hype but, I have to tell you all, it’s really is pretty fair and very balanced. Now if only Jack Cafferty would join Bill on the same show, I could find the show that would satisfy me.
Comment by Kevin Shinnick — July 27, 2005 @ 5:37 pm
Congratulations to CNN for flushing Bill Hemmer and Jack McCafferty. Soledad is attractive, bright, incisive, mature, and yet has a genuine sense of humor. Hemmer was nothing but Clark Kent eye candy for women. He “interviews” victims and kids with completely leading questions from prepared summaries given to him. I only liked McCafferty because Soledad liked him. Otherwise, he brings nothing which Andy Rooney hasn’t done. Funny, I initially thought Hemmer was on vacation. Now that I know he’s gone, I’ll start watching all of the segments instead of only those with Soledad. Keep up the good work, CNN.

Comment by anna e dereich — July 28, 2005 @ 2:40 pm
Bill Hemmer SO much better than Miles O’Brien. The chemistry between BHemmer and Soledad, was so much better than Miles and Soledad. He’s okay (not repellent like Ari with his signature “vest” - grow up Ari) but Bill and Soledad had chemistry - all the difference in this new duo. I also miss Jack. Despite my liberal leanings (and proud of it), Jack was fun. He kicked up the dust. That’s okay because he had no real power to f—- up this country like many or or little-minded legislators. Have you all seen how empty the seats are in the Senate is during all these debates. These guys (mostly) don’t feel like they have to show up for “work.” They hang out in their plush offices (that we paid for with our taxes). Why aren’t we all totally outraged. They talk about all this “service” they aer doing for the American public - hell they get huge amounts of perks from lobbyists who are paying them off to vote their way. Come on Americans - wise up. Why are we so naive still about this political crooks (Repulicans and Democrats alike).

In other words, he makes you horny. It’s no different then men buying Playboy ” for the articles”. Good to know hypocrisy is alive in both genders.

Dear Anna E Dereich–Glad you’re not too old to laugh, granny! I’m certain ol’ Hemmertime will be pleased as punch to hear he makes granny’s nipples hard. And your lusting after someone barely old enough to be your son…maybe you didn’t spend enough time behind the woodshed after all. There’s therapy that might help curb any further cradle-robbing fantasies you might have.
And naturally, any hint of criticism against perfect li’l Billy Boy couldn’t possibly have any truth to it, so I MUST be envious..how grandmotherly of you.

A laugh, granny, is a laugh, is a laugh…one gets it where one can, particularly when one is so close to death’s door… so yeah, you’re welcome. But do be careful when you’re laughing (insert: fake-caring Hemmer googly -eyed expression here)..those dentures can be so dangerous. And we wouldn’t want ol’ Billy Boy to lose a loyal member of his geriatric demographic now, would we?
Too bad it appears you spent a bit too much time behind the woodshed and not enough time in English class, or else you could write a groupie letter to Hemmertime describing his incredible ability to titillate the post-menopausal crowd.
Comment by Andy — July 29, 2005 @ 11:47 pm
CNN has replaced in depth coverage with much safer, repetetive, and less costly coverage. I am very disappointed. However it is interesting to see that there are so many of us who are annoyed enough to be writing our thoughts on this page so long after CNN made this last major blunder.
As for “Andy”, I don’t care if you hate Mr. Hemmer but your ramblings seem to have left the page. It sounds like you need to get a life or have “Scotty beam you up”
Yes, Bill Hemmer was placed on People magazine’s “sexiest men list” but the media tends to function with good looking people in the spotlight. Good looks do not make or break the talents, skills, or value of what a person has to offer but human nature tends to prefer to pay attention to someone who is easy on the eyes. etc., etc.
Comment by David Snyder — July 30, 2005 @ 5:25 am
Dear David..Unless you’re gracing us with your presence from Europe or Asia, I’d suggest that the fact that you’re reading and worse, posting, on this useless subject at 5:25 in the morning is fair indication that someone other than myself needs to ‘get a life’.
What’s more– if you are of the opinion that CNN, for the last 6 or 7 years or so, can be construed as ‘in depth’ coverage of anything other than celebrity worship (People In The News/However-many-second Pop), fatuous ersatz ‘think’ pieces (anything between ‘Headline News’ involving Paula Zahn, Anderson Cooper or Aaron Brown), and the apotheosis of crass pandering ( a tie between Larry King and Wolf Blitzer, and yes, I know there can be only one), then David, it appears that you have beat me to the side of our dearly departed Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott.
I mean, c’mon..’HARD News with Wolf Blitzer’??? If you have to call something ‘Hard’…then you can be assured it ain’t.

Dear Christine…Congratulations! You have managed to string two words together. Here’s one for you: Deprogramming.
And dear dear Anna E. Dereich…I’m gratified to see you’ve taken my advice and tried to make up for time lost behind the woodshed with some remedial English classes. Even quoting ol’ Sam Clemens now..such a step up from ‘See Spot Run’. See what you can achieve when you’re not fixated on doing the dirty with Hemmertime?

Good luck to a great personality, Bill Hemmer, and whereever you end up please let America know where you are so we can follow you again. Your time at CNN was good for all of us
Comment by Leo Cyphert — August 3, 2005 @ 12:00 am
Mr.Hemmer was not just a newscaster, but a very down-to-earth, educated, well groomed professional. It is very odd that CNN would allow such a person to vacate his seat. If at all possible, find him and bring him back. Soledad O’brian is very artificial, especially when she says “Good Morning” to her co-workers, doesnt seem genuine at all, more rehearsed.
Comment by Ron — August 3, 2005 @ 1:12 am
Miles O’Brian was great mid day. I loved to watch his show and loved his cander.
Big mistake moving him, Big mistake moving Jack too, and loose the world news mid day, thats what CNN headlines is for. BRING BACK MILES
Comment by guastini — August 4, 2005 @ 1:22 am
Bill Hemmer was the best thing about am tv. As much as I hate it, I’ll have to go back to Katie.
Comment by Al — August 4, 2005 @ 1:35 pm
AT THE BEST OF TIMES CNN IS JUST……. WHITE NOISE!
Comment by RA — August 5, 2005 @ 10:17 am
Be there on August 30, Bill on Fox during the afternoon, which allows for choice in the morning. Rita Cosby jumps to MSNBC, too bad for Bill, it could have been him. DaySide just became a show to consider watching.
Comment by Kris — August 6, 2005 @ 3:01 pm
I will miss Bill Hemmer. I found him to be thoughtful, intelligent, and unbiased, as least that I could tell. Miles O’Brien is lackluster, and I will be watching the Today Show from now on. I am sorry for Soledad O’Brien.
Comment by Judy — August 6, 2005 @ 5:50 pm
Sorry that Bil is gone from your show…He was the reason I watched American morning….I wish him well…..
Comment by Marion Clarke — August 8, 2005 @ 7:36 am
So, anyone know where Bill Hemmer is? I need to find a new show to watch from 7pm-9pm. Miles O’Brien is definitely likeable. Hemmer at FOX, nnnnnnnnnooooooooooooo!!!
Whatever happened to Gafferty file????
Comment by Kunal Patel — August 8, 2005 @ 4:03 pm
Miles O’Brian exhibits all the polish and sincerity of a used car salesman straight out of central casting. I find him to be utterly unwatchable. My condolences to Carol and Chad. They are the only reason that I’m still an A.M. viewer. Solidad is beyond bad, she’s irrelevant.
Comment by RJF Tess — August 8, 2005 @ 5:48 pm
Soledad should get pregnent again, Hello Heidi!
Comment by PJK — August 9, 2005 @ 5:31 pm
I can’t wait till Aug 30th if Bill is really going to be on the afternoon FOX network. I don’t have negative feelings about the others, and I like Solidad but I miss Bill.
Comment by Ann Eichorn — August 9, 2005 @ 9:38 pm
to 291. bill hemmer said in a recent conversation the middle of august.
Comment by anna dereich — August 10, 2005 @ 12:15 pm
It appears that most of you have made this about Soledad, and not about Bill. Some of your comments are quite racist. As usual, most of you can only identify with caucasians in the world. GET A LIFE!!!!!!!!!

bill hemmer will be on fox news channel beginning monday, 15 aug.
enjoy

to: Anna (poster 294): What is your source for this info? I have been looking everywhere and could never find anything specific. Thanks
Comment by linda — August 10, 2005 @ 7:35 pm
I saw in the Washington Post that he starts on Aug 30, and will be in the old Dayside slot as well as fill in for other positions. What a laugh if he gets on am slot?!
Comment by Kris — August 10, 2005 @ 7:54 pm
to 295 - first i read on foxs greta wire that she ran into him and he said the middle of august. then i read on another one in answer to a viewer e-mail that he starts monday. when i checked back tonight the bit about monday had been taken off. but nothing about 30 aug was ever mentioned. i just know originally saw that he started monday. i would have not posted it otherwise. i will keep looking.
Comment by anna dereich — August 10, 2005 @ 11:22 pm
Thanks Anna (post #297) I sure have missed him during all of the world events since June. I guess I was just so familiar with him as I watched him every day for years. Somehow, he had a fresh and sincere way to deliver the everyday news and just the right reassuring tone to deliver the grave somber stuff. I hope all is well with him and that he will be on air soon.
Comment by linda — August 11, 2005 @ 3:00 pm
to 298 - linda. i am part of what they call over the hill gang. i was a cnn viewer for many, many years and really bill was (in my view) the best. he is one of the most positive people i know. he handled his departure from cnn with such class that it actually made cnn look bad. the day j.klein tired to make jibs about him was the day i quit watching cnn. i have a feeling cnn lost many others viewers. i think bill hemmer will be around for many years to come and i am sure i will be watching him whereever. i wish everything good and great for him. grannyliz5 (anna)

I WONDERED FOR A WHILE WHAT HAPPENED TO BILL HAMMER -JUST DIAPPEARED FRO THE CNN MORNING SHOW- A GREAT LOSS TO CNN-HOPE TO SEE YOU BILL ON ANOTHER NEWS NETWORK SOON MAYBE ABC/CBS OR NBC NEWS ANCHOR NIGHTLY OR CNBC.
Comment by ted berger — August 15, 2005 @ 11:27 am
For those looking for Jack Cafferty, he is still on CNN in the afternoons in “The Situation Room” with Wolf Blitzer. It’s still called “The Cafferty File”. However, in my opinion, the old morning chemistry is not there anymore, and Jack seems more guarded in his much-loved grouchy cynicisms. I’m still waiting impatiently for Bill Hemmer’s appearance on Fox. I hate Fox but will watch if he ever gets on the air.
Comment by Fran Martinez — August 18, 2005 @ 2:32 pm
to 301 fran. i totally agree with you. i dont watch cnn much any more but did check out jack c. a couple of times and you are right its just not the same. he comes off very different now - sort of like a smarty or something. i always got a kick out him before.
Comment by liz dereich — August 18, 2005 @ 4:07 pm
Let me add my voice to the rising chorus of those who are heart-broken and disgusted with CNN’s management for letting a fine reporter like Bill Hemmer go,and for sticking Jack Carfferty in a box in the afternoon with the very uninteresting Wolf Blitzer. My husband and I were so happy to have found a morning news program that gave us lots of information along with some fun, and some good commentary. Why is it when tv has a good thing it has to throw it away. American Morning is no longer worth my time.
Comment by Jane M. Nirella — August 23, 2005 @ 7:29 pm
Iagree with all the comments ….. Miles is not a morning person. What ever you do CNN …you better not get rid of Chad Myer!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yay!!!!!!!! Bill is on right now (4:47 CST ) on FOX….I am soooooo happy.

It was so good to see and hear Bill on the hurricane coverage on Sunday the 28th. It’s going to take time to warm up to the rest of his new FOX family.
Comment by Juls — August 30, 2005 @ 8:59 am
I saw this coming….Soledad wanted the anchor spot and Bill out so bad she couldn’t wait. Ever notice some of the evil eye she would give Bill some mornings. Just came across this site, but, she better remember what goes around comes around and she isn’t too long for that morning show either.
Comment by Eddy — December 16, 2005 @ 2:46 pm
I thought Bill was simply the best face CNN during recent exposure through the gulf war post 9/11. His youth and
inherent inexperence aside, his delivery of the information for the time(researched or given) was classy and “above the best”. Big loss for CNN. Lets see how it works at FOX.
Comment by Mark Gallagher — December 16, 2005 @ 2:52 pm
what ever happened to the elaborate studio at cnn,was it all that expensive to operate? i enjoyed watching all the people that waved at me . and all those ups ,an fed ex trucks riding by and getting their ( free )advertisement for the day.now they only a fold up table or maybe i should say a fold down table .i’m waiting for that morning

Thank goodness I finally found out where Bill Hemmer is, what a great thing for Fox and CNN once again you have screwed up. Soladad and Miles, yuk!!!! It is over to Fox for me.
Comment by Patricia Stuart — January 9, 2006 @ 10:55 am
During the recent tragedy of the coal miners. Bill was the one that I thought acted professionally, ol’Anderson Cooper or whatever from CNN acted like a complete fool, he was just flapping his lips..even the network people were off base. I did think Matt Lauer did an okay job in the morning with hs interview with the gov. He let the two people talk without interrupting all the time…
Comment by Ann — January 10, 2006 @ 10:20 am
The people speak when they say no to the 700 billion bailout.
the solution should be to impeach Bush, put all leaders responsible in JAIL 12 monthe minimum. look to Rosevelt’s solutions that worked (ccc for example to put people to work.)
