Tuesday’s Numbers…

Huge night for everyone but especially for FOX which came out on top. What’s really amazing is that O’Reilly beat his record numbers from Monday night and still didn’t finish first. Hannity & Colmes edged him out and both programs had record numbers for the year as did Greta Van Susteren’s On The Record. CNN charged hard at FOX and though they couldn’t catch them in Total Day or Primetime they did manage to beat them in their respective Demos. Nancy Grace’s numbers show that she got a small push from the Hurricane but more people perceived Keith Olbermann as a better source for this story; Countdown beat her by 500,000. And Scarborough trounced her repeat….

  1. The numbers are because of the story and nothing else. O’Reilly wasn’t even anchoring tuesday night, (or for the rest of the week). I’ve seen numbers for Lou Dobbs, who also wasn’t on, that got over 1M, please, what does that tell you/ This is a national disaster and people are watching. However, i do find it interesting that CNN beat FNC in the “important demo” numbers practically for the entire day and also CNN beat FNC in Overnight hours, 12m - 5am. Rita Cosby on MSNBC drew 1.7 without word one on aruba story; and Greta’s numbers prove aruba a non-issue too.

  2. Nancy Grace was all about Aruba, with some mention of the Hurricane disaster. Olbermann was all Hurricane. You do the math to figure out which people were more interested in hearing about.

  3. If O’Reilly ahd been there the numbers would have been higher. If things keep going, Fox will start nipping on the heels of the broadcast channels.

  4. anonymous: That CNN beat FNC in certain hours and the 25-54 demo indicates that among viewers who never watch cable news except for a big story, CNN still has more name recognition. Certainly the “recognition” gap has narrowed significantly since CNN attracted 5.7 million on 9/11 but it still exists.

  5. Why don’t you report all the hours of the day, including the hours CNN won? According to TVNewser’s ratings, CNN also won the 4:00 PM-7:59 PM hours, including the 5:00 PM Situation Room by almost a million viewers. 3,254,000 (CNN) vs. 2,371,000 (Fox News). That says something about the future of the show and people are certainly liking and being exposed to it.

  6. I thought that the fact that Nancy covered any other case besides the hurricane was very dumb. I think she was basically the only one covering the Natalee Holloway story last night and she probably would’ve gotten much higher ratings if she had not.

  7. Nancy covered the hurricane tonight for the first 45 minutes. But guess what she’s covering for the rest of the show?? Natalee Holloway.

  8. I’m makig a correction and an explanation. The correction is that Bill O’Reilly WAS on tonight, even though he wasn’t supposed to be, second; my point about this weeks numbers not meaning anything, that it was the story that was drawing people to cable that may not normally ever watch was a totally non-partisan comment. I don’t really care who favors FNC or MSNBC or CNN, others do.

I also agree with whoever wrote about POSTING ALL HOURLY NUMBERS, (if their available), would seem to give a clearer andmore honest view of all things.

  9. Is Rita Cosby reporting on Hurricane Katrina from Aruba? I read on another blog that she was.

  10. O’Reilly was on tonight and it was the best coverage so far. I am sure he beat everyone.

  11. “Why don’t you report all the hours of the day, including the hours CNN won? According to TVNewser’s ratings”

As I said yesterday, I post what I get. If someone sends me other numbers I’ll post them. But I’m not going to make a nuisance of myself to get the numbers. These people have been very busy the past few days with handing press requests on the coverage of the hurricane and releasing the August numbers. And these things are a lot of work to transcribe from the raw numbers into a form that blogs can use. You’d be surprised how long it can take. Obviously someone went to some extra work on top of the usual number transcriptions to get TVN those other numbers and considering what they reflect you can probably guess who it was and why.
