Inside Cable News

September 3, 2005

Opinion: It’s 10 pm EST NBC. Do you know where your cable news network is?

MSNBC is running tape of Carlson’s broadcast from two hours ago. Meanwhile CNN and FOX are still live. I know it’s a three day weekend and NBC News is facing budget cuts and this story is hugely expensive for any news network to put on (and MSNBC is never usually live at this point in time anyways). But Larry King is on CNN and Hannity, Colmes, Van Susteren, and Rivera are all on FOX. Is the story really over for the night? Apparently for MSNBC it is. Yet another reason why MSNBC has the reputation it has in some circles. I feel badly for the folks in Secuacus who put so much effort into their work…

UPDATE: An emailer chimes in…

Every month or so MSNBC does something that you just can’t explain. Is Rick Kaplan awake now?

  1. I was surprised when I flipped over and saw Tucker conducting the same interview with Hairy Shearer as he did two hours ago. I mean, I don’t think going to tape at 11:00 pm is the right thing to do, but to do it at 10:00 pm is pretty lame.

  2. “Hannity, Colmes, Van Susteren, and Rivera are all on FOX.”

Oh boy. FNC needs real journalists covering this story. They ain’t qualified to report news.

  3. That’s not my point. My point is FOX is putting A level talent on Live as is CNN.

  4. I don’t know if Kaplan was awake at 10pm but I’m pretty sure whether he’s awake or asleep he’s brain-dead so I don’t guess it must matters. CNN had their little three-hour fundraising fest going on, Fox (who I, the great Faux basher actually ended up watching), was live, with their A-Team, and where was MSNBC? In re-runs. I will say this for them, right now, they’ve got Pete Williams in the studio in DC, Cheryl Cassone anchoring in NJ, Brian Williams (who is now back in NYC by the way), and Joe Scarborough on the phone (Chris Matthews was on earlier by phone) and now CNN is in tape but Fox is still live as well.

  5. I watched a little bit of Tucker…He mentioned the water was repulsive and people were using the floor as a latrine. Gee Tucker, any more news?
