Latin group upset with CNN…
Jose Cardenas in the St. Petersberg Times writes about the Leauge of United Latin American Citizens dispute with CNN and how Lou Dobbs and the cutting away from Florida Governer Jeb Bush’s comments in Spanish play a role…
While other stations carried Bush’s remarks in both English and Spanish, CNN broke away when the governor began to speak in Spanish.
Cazares believes that showed disregard for Spanish speakers in Florida, and said he plans to write a protest letter to the network. He urges LULAC members to do the same.
Cazares also wants to bring attention to a boycott that LULAC, which he has rejoined, launched against the network last summer.
LULAC members think CNN is hostile toward immigrants because one of its reporters, host Lou Dobbs, has spoken regularly against illegal immigrants on his program Lou Dobbs Tonight.

Good for CNN. Immigrants in years past came to our country and had to learn our language. But now we’re expected to acquiesce to their way of life and their language. Why stop at Spanish? Why not broadcast in Arabic, German, Chinese, or many of the other thousands of languages in the world? Besides, I thought it was a requirement for citizenship that these immigrants learn English.

I agree. Isn’t Enlish the official language of the US? Nothing wrong with speaking multiple ones. But, your first one should be English!

Welcome to America, the official language is ENGLISH! If you choose to come to the US, learn the language if you want to survive. If not, get the heck out!

John - Welcome to 9th grade history class…the United States does not have an official language. English is not the official language of the Untied States. It’s kind of the point of it all. Maybe CNN can throw Miss Hispanic 2005 Soledad O’Brien at the problem.
Comment by Ms. Anonymous — October 29, 2005 @ 10:38 am
Hmm..isn’t that why CNN has CNN En Español, a channel that caters to that demographic?
Comment by Anonymous — October 29, 2005 @ 11:03 am
Well I think it’s about time the US has one.
Comment by John — October 29, 2005 @ 11:04 am
But Spanish, however, is the official language of Florida. And that is where this hurricane hit! You should not try to require people in Florida to learn more languages than anyone else in America. And John why don’t you go to miami and see if you can survive with just ENGLISH.
If you go to Alaska, you’re going to see a lot of people speaking Russian. In areas of Louisianna, there is a lot of French, and in Florida, yes, there are a lot of people who speak Spanish. Hmmm…it almost appears this country was founded by different cultures around the world! Maybe that’s why we’re not called “England” and maybe that’s why our official language isn’t called “English” and there is no such language as “American.”

We didn’t drag them over the border now did we? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Learn English or GET OUT!
Comment by John — October 29, 2005 @ 11:59 am
yeah i agree…it’s fine if anyone else wanted to air it, but cnn did nothing wrong in not doing so
Comment by Jason C Nesbitt — October 29, 2005 @ 2:28 pm
First of all…from what I remember, all three cable news channels broke away from the spanish portion of the gov’s announcement.
Secondly…if a spanish speaking person was watching CNN, I’m guessing they could understand english or else they wouldn’t have tune into an english speaking channel. So, why would an english language channel show a spanish portion of an announcement that just reiterated what was said in english?
Finally…Lou Dobbs doesn’t have anything against immigrants…he, just like most of us, has a problem with people who breaks the law…and that’s what ILLEGAL immigrants are doing. And when their’s MORE illegal immigrant in the country than legal ones, then their’s a problem with our borders!

John - I suggest you seek help your your anger towards non-English speaking people. That’s kind of a problem. I also suggest you continue to watch CNN since that’s where all the idiots turn to for news.
Comment by ITK — October 29, 2005 @ 4:58 pm
ITK - I watch CNN and I’m definitely no idiot. However, I think you qualify because of the stupid remark you made.
Comment by sam — October 29, 2005 @ 6:22 pm
Want news, turn to CNN. Want anything other than news watch one of the other channels.
Comment by John — October 29, 2005 @ 9:52 pm
Well I am definitely a CNN watcher because of their personalities, this, however, was an executive decision, and of course this company is all run by the republican big-business unit of Time Warner. Where as, News Corp is actually a company that aims for minorities. It upsets me, but nevertheless I’ll deal with sorry executives and go with cnn before i ever dared watch anything that is not “news.”

CNN’s a shell of its former self. Tune in any Sat. or Sun. You’ll find canned programming for several hours of the day, almost like MSNBC. CNN can’t even have a morning show (on the weekend) without putting Dr. Gupta, Gerri Willis or someone else in a 30 minute canned segment once or twice in between 7am-noon EST. What part of “canned” is news? Its certainly not new. HLN is much better at the new part than CNN’s been for a long time. Even though some of their programming is live to tape, it goes into a wheel format on the weekends. Your World Today (CNNI) is news and more relevant than ANYTHING CNN puts on, which is quite pathetic. So close, yet so far away.
Comment by Terance — October 30, 2005 @ 7:43 am
It’s the weekend. Folks have more time to sit down and watch and digest programs like Gerri Willis’ and Gupta’s. CNN airs less taped programming on the weekends now than it did several months ago AND content wise it beats the crap on the other so called news channels. FNC is live most of the day each weekend BUT it sure isn’t NEWS they are delivering. It’s the same ol debate, opinionating crap they are famous for. So to say they program LIVE NEWS all weekend would be wrong.
Comment by John — October 30, 2005 @ 10:09 am
By putting canned programs in the middle of the morning show, it breaks the continuity. If they want to air that crap they should do it before or after.

Lets read our history books and find out what languages form this nation. Let us not forget the thousands of native languages before English. We then saw the imigration from Europeans that brought English, French and YES Spanish. Of course the Spanish arived in Florida first. Also in California, where there are places where Spanish has been spoken for more than 300 years. Yes, way before the Pilgrams arrived. So who is the immigrant? I think we all are. In San Francisco, the Chinese arived at the same time period, and that does not mean that they have to forget their native tounge and speak what is around them, because if we did, we would probably be writing this in Cherekee or Souix. So let learn a language or maybee lets try to educate ourselves. I speak 3 languages, how many do you?

Cnn has a network devoted entirely to Spanish language news. CNN en Espanol. The League should know that. Could the LUIAC be trying to get some headlines for themselves?

CNN is unfair to hispanics in the United States, unfair to hispanics overseas because it makes big bucks in South America with Turner Latin America (hyprocrisy in CNN), CNN is unfair to hispanic employees in CNN downtown Atlanta, just see this video of an employee that CNN fired when he was dying of brain cancer.

Want more of CNN?..
Salvadoran journalist Mario Vela passes away 12 days after being dismissed by CNN. The organization AGACAMT denounces the hostile attitude of CNN towards ill employees. Jose Ramon Cotti, Puerto Rican journalist dismissed by CNN, remains in a hospital after months of pain.
Atlanta (23 March 2009). – Salvadoran journalist Mario Vela passed away 12 days after CNN dismissed him. The company fired this worker despite the knowledge of the seriousness of his illness. Mr. Vela had been several months agonizing in Washington after his doctors declared there was no hope to save his life.
Mario Vela and his family underwent the pressure imposed by CNN in his last days when receiving a document in which their rights of denunciation were questioned and conditioned to the signing of a humiliating severance package.
CNN served notice to Mr. Vela via mail explaining that he no longer was to have his disability benefits and the medical insurance from the company.
Eva Ventín, president of AGACAMT, the Galician Association Against Moral Harassment at the Workplace, denounces the hypocritical attitude of CNN, that, after putting Mr. Vela in the street, sent the Vice-president of CNN Spanish, Cristopher Crommett, to this employee’s funeral to sing a song and to deliver a pitiful donation.
Relatives and friends of Mario Vela were themselves forced to organize a fundraising concert to collect money to pay for his medical treatment.
It is difficult to think that a powerful and multi-millionaire company like CNN, that in spite of the world’s economy crisis have announced economic gains, gets to mistreat its professionals and families”.
Mario Vela who passed away at age 34, was named by the mayor of Washington DC “the journalist of the year of 2007” recognition who was emphasized by his support to the Hispanic community and towards the under-privileged.
With more than 10 years of experience Mario Vela was news director of Mega Communications and Radio Capital 730 in DC. Vela worked for Channel 30 of Univisión and Radio World in Maryland.
AGACAMT wants to bring to the world’s attention other serious cases of labor harassment at CNN as in 2003 the local press of Atlanta related this network with the depression of a journalist who committed suicide. (see original editorial of the Mundo Hispanico about former news director Abel Dimant).
The complaints of labor abuses and irregularities had been communicated to Mr. Jim Walton, the President of CNN, but there are no answers neither solutions that protect the victims.
AGACAMT denounces that “this it is not the unique case of a journalist dismissed by CNN in a serious condition”. News anchor Jose Ramon Cotti remains in a hospital in Georgia after several months of pain.
The Puerto Rican journalist also was dismissed by CNN while on disability awaiting a delicate heart operation.
CNN brought Mr. Cotti and his wife to Atlanta from New York 9 years ago and the company has now totally forgotten this family, not even making a phone call to inquire about its employee’s condition after double bypass surgery and leg amputation and also after Mrs. Cotti’s hospitalization with health problems including stress related condition.
We communicated Mr. Walton of the above again with no responses.
This prestigious New York radio journalist, recipient of Several prizes including two awards from ACE. (Award of creative excellence) is just another one of the numerous victims of the dramatic crisis that shakes CNN.
