November numbers…
The November numbers are out and the “what it all means” he said/she said analysis begins….
CNN is touting its rival FNC’s diminished Total Day Demo numbers for the month of November ‘05 vs. November ‘04. CNN notes that FNC “lost HALF of its Total Day P25-54 audience, delivering their lowest numbers in over 2 years!”
CNN went on to note that the only network to show gains in either total viewers or the P25-54 Demo was HLN.
Anderson Cooper 360, since its Nov. 7 launch, has increased the P25-54 audience (+2%) in the 10-12 midnight block versus Nov. ‘04 programming, while FNC (Greta and O’Reilly) continue to hemorrhage viewers in that time slot (down 43%). MSNBC is down 55% compared to Nov. ‘04.
Anderson has already closed the P25-54 gap with FNC from 10-12 midnight by more than 100 percentage points:
P25-54 Gap
Nov 04: 179%
Nov 05: 57%
The Situation Room has also increased its new 7pm timeslot by 8% in total viewers and 4% in P25-54 over year-ago, while the Fox Report with Shep Smith was down -21% in total viewers and lost nearly half its P25-54 audience (down 47%). MSNBC’s Hardball was also well behind its November 2004 performance (down 21% in total viewers and 17% in P25-54).
CNN included a nifty graphic showing how Anderson Cooper 360 in its new timeslot is closing the gap with FNC…
However it needs to be noted these AC 360/Situation Room comparisons are somewhat skewed because CNN is taking the three weeks beginning November 7, when AC 360 and The Situation Room began running in their new time slots, and comparing that to all of November 04.
I suspect FNC will not sit idly by while CNN takes shots at them, given that they’re still #1….
UPDATE: FTVLive has a nice take down of what it all means. I mention this because it’s what I would have written if I had the time. Now I don’t have to because FTVLive has done it for me…. :P

Have to give CNN credit though, they are THE BEST at SPIN!!

It is also very hard to make a comparison between November ‘04 and November ‘05. One was an election year, one was not. Of course the numbers are going to be skewed.
