Media Matters singles out Mathews…

Liberal advocacy group (masquerading as a “watchdog”) Media Matters For America singles out Chris Mathews as 2005’s “Misinformer of the Year”. Read Mathews’ “crimes” and ask yourself, “Is he misinforming, or expressing an opinion?”

Since our launch in May 2004, Media Matters for America has monitored, analyzed, and corrected conservative misinformation in the media, wherever and whenever we find it. As you may remember, last year our staff conducted an extensive review of all the misinformation we identified and corrected in the early days in order to name the first annual “Misinformer of the Year.” We singled out one particularly egregious purveyor of falsehoods and awarded Bill O’Reilly the dubious title. O’Reilly graciously accepted the award on Fox News’ The O’Reilly Factor.

This year, of all the news anchors, columnists, pundits, and reporters whose work we’ve critiqued and corrected, one man stands alone as a clear successor to the O’Reilly throne. We are pleased to announce broadcast journalist, former newspaper bureau chief, former presidential speechwriter, and best-selling author Chris Matthews has earned the title of 2005’s “Misinformer of the Year.” At times, it has even been difficult to tell the difference between 2005’s Misinformer of the Year and his predecessor.

For your reading pleasure, we’ve compiled some highlights of Matthews’s most egregious false and misleading claims, as well as his glowing and gushing praise for President Bush.

  1. Get my smelling salts…like this is a shock to anyone? C’mon. Everyone is so ready to jump on the hate Bill O’Reilly train (even if they not COMPLETELY sure what all that controversy is about) that they forget the Chris Matthews’ of the world lurk behind even larger shadows.

  2. Of course the other side at the MRC singles out Matthews quite often… They seem to be watching a totally different show with Matthews all but calling for Bush’s impeachment over “Plamegate.”

  3. This is suck a freaken joke!!!! Media Matters expects us to believe Chrissy Matthews is in bed with GWB?? They desperately try to find some pro GWB qoutes from Matthews but what about the hundreds of thousands of misinformation bashing GWB?? Media Matters should stop drinking the Kool-Aid

  4. You have got to be kidding me Lurker. Have you ever watched Hardball? Chris will bring up the name of either Hillary or Bill Clinton and bash them at every single opportunity. He brings them up when they are no way related to a story. Remember, he was leading the “Let’s impeach Bill Clinton” for having sex brigade (even though Matthews own infidelities are rather well known in DC). Trust me, the Dems can’t stand Matthews and the GOP doesn’t want him. I’m sure Media Matters didn’t have to search hard to find a “I love George” quote-he dispenses them practically every night and has a long record of misstatements regarding the GOP, glossing over any criticisims. Matthews may have once worked for Tip O’Neill a million years ago but he turned in his Democratic membership card at least 10 years ago. The CEO of NBC-Uni bragged not too long ago how his proudest accomplishment had been turning Matthews and Tim Russert from Dems to Neocons. Really, get your facts straight before you make your outrageous claims that Matthews is a liberal. Maybe once, a long time ago, but certainly not in recent years.

  5. Hahaha, Oh boy Chrissy Matthews a Neocon??? ROTFLMAO!!!! All I’ll just say is did you see the sad puppy dog look on Chrissy Matthews face on election night? He didn’t have that look all day till GWB was pronounced the likely winner then that frown look appeared. Too funny!!!

  6. This is a shock. I thought Chrissy was a major-league Bush basher, and I haven’t watched him in about two years. But it looks like Media Matters has excerpted a few of his pro-Bush quotes, and as a result, has made him Public Enemy #1.

Poor Chrissy; he’s unloved by both the right AND the left.

  7. Chris Matthews blows hot and cold. One second he’s practically slobbering at GW’s feet, the next minute he’s going on and on about the CIA leak investigation. Because he keeps jumping from one side of the fence to the other for no apparent reason, instead of coming off as balanced, he simply comes off as not knowing WHAT he thinks, and hence being disliked by both sides.

Oh, and Spud, there are plenty of conservative advocacy groups out there masquerading as watchdogs, too. The truly impartial and unbiased “watchdogs” are few and far between.
