Trace Gallagher gets Fox Report Weekend, Studio B

Trace Gallagher announced today on Studio B that he’s going to be taking over as weekend anchor of The Fox Report starting tomorrow. FNC will be repeating its weekday setup on weekends by adding a Studio B at 3pm ET. This is a surprise to me. As good as Gallagher is FNC never tipped its hand that Trace was under consideration for the gig by having him do much subbing on the weekend.

For Page Hopkins’ fans this must be a blow. First she’s eased out of Saturday 2pm’s hour by Jamie Colby. Now she’s going to be displaced from the Sunday edition of The Fox Report though, admittedly, it was never spelled out that she was the permanent anchor. But she was the #1 backup on Fox Report Weekend and the conventional wisdom usually is the backup is first in line for consideration.

  1. Oh No, My Husband Loves Page, What Will He Do?? Does anyone know where is Miss Kimberly Newsome??

  2. She’s not “Mrs. Newsome” anymore…

  3. Once again, the talented Uma Pemmaraju was passed over for a regular hosting assignment.

  4. I’ve noticed that FNC seems to be re-aligning their main anchors more and more so that when there’s a BIG breaking news story that happens over the weekend - like a Hurricane - they wouldn’t necessarily have to send in the weekday people.

People like Brian Wilson, Jamie Colby, Gregg Jarrett, Bret Baier, and Trace Gallagher could anchor non-stop if breaking news warrented.

This seems to be continuing the re-branding of FNC weekend as the place where news doesn’t stop.

But with Studio B Weekend at 3, and the Big Story Weekend at 5, it would seem rather lonely to not have a Your World Weekend at 4! (but with the biz’ block, that wouldn’t happen)

  5. With these recent moves, not only Trace replacing Rick Folbaum on “TFR” and Rick and Dari Alexander shifted to WNYW (New York), but also the arrival of ex-CNNer Rudi Bakhtiar as a correspondent (any bets as to how soon she will begin hosting–remember what has happened with Julie Bandaras?) what does the future hold for certain FNC on-air personalities? The Page Hopkins fans must be very disappointed.

  6. #1 According to Kimberly’s bio on foxnews.com it says she started “The Line Up” in January. So, I guess it’ll be soon.

  7. Trace, huh? FNC grunts should revolt. Why do all the “Hollywood” reporters get shots at jobs over those who perform well on all levels….not just the glitz? FNC ought to wise up and promote the folks that got em where they are. I still say, “Dance with the person what brung ya”.

  8. Notice many of the FNC anchors with business news experience (e.g., Page Hopkins, Bob Sellers) are appearing less and less. Brenda B. and Terry K.–even Dagen McDowell–are also seen less and less during the week. Rebecca Gomez (sans business bachground) seems to be the business report designee weekdays. I think this means the development of the new Fox Business channel is heating up.

  9. Charles,
I preface my comments by declaring that I am totally committed to FNC.
However, you make a good point. I have always noted that the FOX daytime weekend lineup was routinely rather ineffective. No gravitas, so to speak. (Excluding the outstanding Tony Snow)
Page was pleasant enough but not the one I would turn to
    if something big happened.
The relocation of Trace was announced months ago, long before Rick departed.
There are some at the network that I just don’t “get”.
Julie B., Eric L. Maybe I am missing something.

  10. Roger: Trace was more than a “Hollywood reporter” and hope his move to New York doesn’t leave a big hole in the FNC Los Angeles Bureau.

Noelle and Terance: I trust Roger Ailes judgement on talent but I am highly skeptical of Ms. Guilfoyle who suddenly appeared everywhere after her ex-husband assumed office and then created headlines by attempting to legalize gay marriage.

    Comment by Ira — February 4, 2006 @ 1:51 pm

  11. Ms. Guilfoyle is pretty easy to figure out. Just do a basic Google search. The former lingerie model used ‘modeling’ to work her way through school. Then the strategic marriage to the hot politician–read how she talked about her own and her husband’s sexual attributes at a gay activists’ rally. Finally, how she ‘worked’ the social circuit, from the Getty’s in CA, to the Harper’s photo spread, and working the phones the minute she hit town to crash NYC elite events. Her ‘friendships’ with Bill Hemmer and Dan Abrams once she hit NYC (before she filed for divorce?) are also well documented. Ms. Guilfoyle is pretty self-explanatory…

  12. Trace is an excellent choice. Looks like it’s going to be another solid job by Jamie Colby tonight–this time on the Big Story. But what happened to The Lineup? Recycling the old Geraldo piece for what reason? That’s odd. They’ve been doing The Lineup even without the permanent for weeks now. Why change?

    Comment by George — February 4, 2006 @ 11:08 pm

  13. FNC is hard to understand. They’re far and away #1 on weekends (though lagging a bit in the demo at times) and yet they’ve been in near perpetual overhaul mode on weekends for the last six months. There’s an old saying, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Maybe FNC thinks it can do better than it has on weekends and that’s the reason for the changes. The risk is alienating the viewers who liked the way things were.

    Comment by Spud — February 5, 2006 @ 12:40 am

  14. Not to mention fans of certain on-air talent.

    Comment by Bob — February 5, 2006 @ 3:01 am

  15. Spud: FNC is stil scrambling since Geraldo moved to his daily syndicated show and to a lesser extent, Rita Cosby left for MSNBC. Love him or hate him, but Geraldo would draw over 1 million viewers each Saturday or Sunday night.

    Comment by Ira — February 5, 2006 @ 12:57 pm

  16. I love the way that Ira says that FNC is scrambling after the loss of Geraldo, as if FNC didn’t have anything to do with the situation. It’s all a plan, and in the end the smartest people in television will have bettered the product…just wait and see. They’re setting up their next generation of anchors and reproters who will help FNC continue dominate television news.

  17. The article is worth reading, I like it very much. I will keep your new articles.
