The riddle of the mystery MSNBC square…

What is it? Since at least last week a mysterious dark grey square has appeared in the lower right corner of MSNBC’s feed. I have to assume it’s MSNBC’s feed because I’ve seen it on both EchoStar and DirectTV satellite dishes which in my mind rules out this being a glitch in my equipment. I don’t have access to cable so I don’t know if it’s there too. It’s hard to see when the ticker is on because the ticker is black and the square is near black. But when the ticker is gone it is plainly visible. I made a screen grab tonight that shows it perfectly. During commercials it’s there as well but it doesn’t show up during Direct TV or EchoStar cut in commercials, which says to me it’s not a glitch in the satellite channel. So what is causing it?

UPDATE: The mystery is solved in the comments section…

  1. It’s blue.

And it’s used to ID a specific feed to cable MSOs. Last time it was to ID the digital feed. I would imagine it has something to do with the upcoming split Olympic feed.

  2. Yup…here in Canada the MSNBC feed does NOT have that little block, so we’re getting the non-Olympic feed I’m guessing (can’t wait to see MSNBC docs during the Olympics!!)
