Sanjay Gupta profile…

Stephanie Ramage in The Sunday Paper has a profile of CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta…(via TVNewser)

In the world of television health news, no one else can lay claim to anything even close to Gupta’s popularity. ”Who are Fox’s medical reporters?” asks Sree Sreenavasan, head of the new media department at Columbia University’s School of Journalism. “Do you know? Do you know who the medical reporters at NBC are? Even people who don’t watch news know who Sanjay Gupta is. That says something.”

In general, CNN’s audience share trails that of Fox. CNN clocks into second place among the networks for most of its programming, but viewer-ship for its health coverage, which is tucked in amongst the news, can be hard to gage.

Nonetheless, Gupta’s appeal can’t be denied. From stepping in to help U.S. Marine doctors in Iraq perform brain surgery to covering 2004’s tsunami devastation, to the earthquake in Pakistan last fall and bird flu—on a regular basis, Gupta seems to be everywhere his 64 million unique monthly viewers (meaning those who tune in more than once a day don’t count) would prefer not to be. The hot-spot correspondence combined with the strong, confident voice and impressive medical background are irresistible.

  1. What are the ratings for this guy’s weekly weekend program — isn’t that the way to track his popularty? How many people see him as appointment viewing?

  2. I agree with Ms. Ramage.
FOX keeps bringing in unappealing “past their prime” doctors, and boring younger female doctors.
I have seen so many of them on Studio B, and no one clicks!

This is one they can’t seem to get right.

  3. Could be all FNC goes after is eye candy and doesn’t hire anyone qualified. FNC lacks in all departments, sports, meteorologists and real JOURNALISTS! Too bad FNC can nearly put anyone on the air and make them seem important. Whoever is letting Janice Dean to continue to do the weather is clueless. Yes it seems I’m talking about you Mr. Ailes.

  4. Dr. Gupta has gotten fat and out of shape. He’s not even close to being hot anymore.

  5. Who does FNC have, that old bald guy? He’s really slippery looking to me.

  6. Fox has a Dr. on their network named Holly Phillips and she’s HOT HOT HOT. They need to get rid of that old Dr. Manny Alvarez (who is unwatchable) and give us more Holly Phillips.

  7. That old guy on FNC is awful. He’s a gynecologist, what the heck does he know about medical emergencies faced by the Hurricane Katrina survivors?

  8. I’m with Christopher, Dr. Phillips is great. She’s versatile, young and smart! She should be the regular medical correspondent on Fox News.

  9. That Dr. Manny was just on Fox. He talked about carbs, sugar, and steroids. Guess what, too much sugar and steroids are bad for you! This guy was a complete waste of time. And he had note cards with him. I guess it’s difficult for him to remember how carbs and steroids work, so he needed to refer to his notes. That says it all.

  10. FOX also needs to get rid of that Grouchy old man on Sunday’s House Calls. I hate him. I change the channel every time he comes on.

  11. Can’t we just have a little fun with Dr. Gupta? He’s seems sweet enough to take it like a man and I personally have done a lot to embarrass him on the internet and I never heard him complain about it. Not even once. So making websites about him gives the press something to talk about, and personally I think Dr. Gupta is healthier for the public to talk about than Brad Pitt…So let’s just make him the Brad Pitt of medical news. So he’s smart and makes women’s nipples hard. There’s nothing wrong with that.

    (just laugh please)
