CNN gets slagged for AP story…

Some of the lefty blogs, DailyKos and Media Matters for America in particular, are up in arms over a headline; “Dems Indicted; Clinton, Kerry Targeted”. And they’re blaming CNN for it…

From DailyKos

Dems indicted. By the grand jury of CNN and Ken Mehlman

Whoever wrote that headline should get fired. No Democrat is being indicted. Republicans have a current monopoly in that department.

And will CNN give Dean that much play when he gives a speech about real indictments?

From Media Matters

Only on Fox CNN: “Dems Indicted”

Summary: CNN ran a headline on its website referring to a political attack by RNC chairman Ken Mehlman as “Dems Indicted.”

The article in question was written by the AP. The headline, which the blogs are all in a tither over, CNN believes was written by Netscape. CNN did not write the article or the headline but is catching all kinds of flack for it.

UPDATE: I just realized something after looking over the Media Matters screen grab of the headline…

This isn’t even on CNN.com! It’s on Netscape’s News Site. CNN is getting slagged for an article that didn’t have anything to do with them. But notice the top of the page. It says Netscape News with CNN. Everyone focussed in on the “CNN” part of the banner but totally ignored the “Netscape News” part. A clear cut case of guilt by association, even if the association in this case is completely bogus! And Media Matters is still saying the article appeared on CNN.com! It never did!

  1. No surprise here Spud. CNN will never do anything right in anyone’s eyes. As you say, guilt by association. CNN is being bashed rather unfairly on this one.

  2. Doesn’t TW or AOL still own Netscape?

  3. Media Matters distorting the truth, and asking you to “Take Action!” before getting all their ducks in a row? [sarcasm]That NEVER happens![/sarcasm]

  4. How is CNN linked to Netscape?

BTW - the concept of Media Matter distorting the truth is absolutely ridiculous! (snark)

  5. CNn and Netwcape have partnered on things in the past, there’s some sort of relationship there. Somebody at CNN.com should be less lazy.

  6. The above statement shows a complete lack of understanding of the branding relationship between CNN and Netscape and is just as innacurate as what DailyKos and Media Matters did. If you want to make CNN look bad do it over something that they actually have control over…

  7. On conservative blogs like this, Media Matters can do nothing right, while MRC and the Olbermann Watch leader get loving posts. It’s a shame there isn’t a place for real moderates to go to read about cable news. So sad indeed.
