More Olbermann name calling…
The New York Daily News’ Bob Raissman writes about an incident on the radio where both Keith Olbermann and Dan Patrick called the owner of the Carolina Hurricanes names…
At one point in their critique, Patrick called Karmanos a “scumbag.” Shortly after that tasteless reference, Olbermann called Karmanos a “douchebag.”
I don’t know if Karmanos is aware of these over-the-top characterizations, which have absolutely no place on a sportstalk radio show airing early in the afternoon, but ESPN suits heard what Olbermann and Patrick said and were not amused.
“It’s not our policy to take cheap shots or resort to name calling,” said Rob Tobias, an ESPN spokesman. “And to that end, we will be handling this matter internally with both Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann.”

Sounds like KO is letting his mouth get him into trouble again. Whether its on tv, email, radio, KO has all the bases covered!

For Keith, this, sadly, has been on too many occasions, par for the course.

When will someone rein this jerk in? It will be interesting to see if Dan Abrams steps up to the plate.

Is this the same Pete Karmanos who has donated millions to cancer research in the name of Barbara Ann, his wife, who died of cancer? (I really don’t know; I’m asking here). If so, Keith would make anyone who defamed such a person the WPITW, regardless of whether the man did something stupid in the another realm (baseball, in this case).
No matter what the guy did, however, “douchebag” is not appropriate on the airwaves.

Pssst, Missy, the Carolina Hurricanes are a hockey team, not baseball :)
However, I agree with the rest of your assessment. And yes, it is the same person.

This may have stemmed from the fact that the Hartford Whalers moved to North Carolina in 1997, spending their first two seasons in Greensboro, before moving to their current home in Raligh in 1999, when their arena (which they share with North Carolina State) was completed.

Over Here,
Thanks for the info. I haven’t followed sports too much in the last few years (as you may have surmised)!

Ah, I should have known that another self-righteous idiot from the Daily News would again be having the vapors because of Keith Olbermann’s alleged foul language…now THIS is the very DEFINITION of “much ado about nothing”! I heard the show that day and I was not offended. The guy sounds like the definition of creep…or any other word you want to use…for someone who screws over devoted fans of a team and makes them think they can keep a team in their city when he knows he is planning to move it anyway.
“Douchebag” and “scumbag” are mild compared to the words used to describe Art Modell, who did much the same thing with the Cleveland Browns. And rightly so!
Dan and Keith are on the side of the fans, not the fatcat team owners. Maybe it’s about time someone called them the names they deserve when they act like jerks to the fans who help make them rich.

No, Dan and Keith are on the side of their own highly-overpaid paychecks where they get paid to say things to create conversation and discussion for their radio program. They just went a bit too far this time and came off as hypocritical in the process as they’d just skewered someone else for using similar name calling earlier that same week.
Thanks for the info about the team owner’s charitable donations. It just goes to show you that there are always two sides to every story and that not everyone is all good (or all bad). Listening there Tanne?

Clearly, nearly NONE of you were actually listening to the show that day. Well I was and this is completely blown out of porportion. Dan relayed his story about meeting the owner on the golf course after Keith had refreshed the audience’s memory about how he screwed the fans in Hartford when he eventually moved the team to Carolina. Dan called him a ’scumbag’ definately, but Keith just sort of chimed in that the female equivalent of ’scumbag’ was ‘douchebag’, I think in just a fairly weak attempt at humor. Keith didn’t even directly call the owner a name, just provided some gender-specific translation in trying to generate a joke.

Um, no, MGM. Dan and Keith are on the side of the fans. You think they give two hoots what someone like you has to say about their show? You want to talk about hypocritical? ESPN would be huge hypocrites if they “handled this matter internally” with these guys while most of their other talk show hosts say more misogynistic and anti-gay things in the course of a day than you can even think of in a year. The conversation on Dan Patrick’s show is positively clean by comparison. Yeah, sure they have fun like kids sometimes and they do not always make jokes or double entendres that your virgin Aunt Martha might approve of, but they are actually better in that department than some of the other guys I’ve heard. And Keith has been known to go out of his way to try to get other people he’s on the air with to can it when they go too far.
Oh, and here’s some news: Charitable donations don’t automatically make a person good and virtuous. Why, if they did, all you Olbermann haters would have to think he was wonderful. And Lord knows you aren’t going to suddenly change your minds and start thinking that, just because he donated the money he made reporting from Ground Zero to police and fire charities, or because he supports the Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation, which develops educational programs designed to end domestic violence.
My gosh…it can’t be that Olbermann’s not all bad either…?

Tanne, no one could possibly know this much about Keith Olbermann without actually being him. Is there something you’d like to tell us?
Comment by Jimmy — June 29, 2006 @ 9:00 am
Jimmy, Some of the more intelligent folks (Myself included) who post here are convinced that Tanne is either Dopy, Dopy’s evil twin or his Mother……Take your pick…
Comment by JR — June 29, 2006 @ 4:04 pm
Jimmy, guess what. Some people are quick studies.
JR, guess what. Some of the people you think are more intelligent, yourself included, are wrong. I am not one of the seven dwarfs, one of their evil twins or one of their mothers.
As for Thom and his “earthshaking” “bimbo eruption,” yeah, it’s a “bimbo eruption,” all right…a phony blog started by a mentally disturbed fan. Yep, she’s a bimbo, all right…but not one who ever met him, that’s for sure! LOL!
Comment by tanne — June 29, 2006 @ 7:36 pm
Tanne, I wont take the time to reply to your comments. You watch countdown and that seems like punishment enough…
I luv you man…..!!!!!!!
Comment by JR — June 29, 2006 @ 8:19 pm
Tanne believes this woman’s blog bogus because she’s operating on the false impression that Olbermann is a virgin and is saving himself for her. That should tell you all you need to know about Tanne.
