Olbermann gives advice to Bill…

Wellp…let the record show that I called it

Keith Olbermann ran “Factor Fiction” to return O’Reilly’s fire from the night before. Crooks and Liars has the video…as does MSNBC which is putting it on its main page

Fox’s ratings are lower than they were five years ago. Bill-Oh, 267,000 of your nightly viewers have vanished since last June. Call Fox Security, they are missing,”

  1. Spud, I guess you can now replace Miss Cleo with your predictive abilities re: your prediction about Keith going after O’Reilly. But Keith will go after O’Reilly now matter what - it’s not like he has to be provoked or reminded; all O’Reilly has to do is breathe, and Keith will attack/find fault and run a segment on his program.

But how funny is this - isn’t O’Reilly STILL beating Keith in a ratio of about 6:1? How can Olbermann possibly even MENTION ratings when his own program typically finishes LAST in his time slot every night?

And O’Reilly’s 4 a.m. ratings still beat Keith’s prime time showing! Keith is the LAST person in the world who should be going after anyone for poor ratings!!!!!

But it’s oh so much easier for Olbermann to attack O’Reilly and keep MSNBC on his side when O’Reilly deliberately sticks his foot in the bear trap. I really thought he had learned that by now. He managed to avoid nailing Olbermann over the email fiasco. But I guess he couldn’t help himself and just had to start this up again.

  3. You got it, Spud. If O’Reilly had a lick of sense, he’d sit back on his supposed ratings and not be bothered by all this. But Olbermann knows how to get his goat and he does it with brilliant humor. It’s for this reason that Olbermann can’t resist. O’Reilly can’t resist attacking him.

And I can’t help but wonder if Bill-O stayed silent about the “email fiasco” because he realized it was nothing but a really limp attempt by KO’s enemies to frame him for doing something “real, real bad” that didn’t actually work all that well. So it really wasn’t worth going after KO on that…because all KO would do is point out the terms of the suit Andrea Mackris filed against him, the evidence of which is still posted on The Smoking Gun from what I understand. KO gets enough mileage out of loofahs and falafels (and rightly so) without doing that.

  4. But who knows whether O’Reilly is even bothered at this point? He really doesn’t seem like it!

I have two aunts who are in a “feud”, although it’s only one who’s engaged it in actively. She’s the one who complains about the other constantly, rarely gets invited to family gatherings and is in very poor health. Her sister, in excellent health and leading a very productive life, wishes her sister would talk to her and just mentions this fact once in a while (there’s an analogy here, OK?).

I can’t believe Keith is still so obsessed w/O’Reilly after all this time! If the “attack O’Reilly” strategy was working that well, Keith’s ratings would be astronomical.

  5. Tanne–honestly, either you’re Keith Olbermann, you’re his mother/sister or you’re on his payroll. Let me let you in on something that most people here figured out a long time ago about Olbermann: he’s not perfect. And let’s get another thing straight here: Olbermann couldn’t be “framed” by his “enemies” as you put it if he didn’t a) shoot his mouth off and b) do stupid things like respond to freeper emails or c) conduct his personal life via his corporate email account. At a certain point, he has to take responsibility for his own actions but instead, he relies upon fan(atic)s like you to condone him and explain him and apologize for him no matter what he does. When and where exactly does he become responsible for what he’s done? Not everything is a conspiracy theory. I know they are quite the rage these days but sometimes, a banana is just a banana sometimes and an arrogant, egotistical ex-sports anchor turned news guy with an inability to keep his mouth shut and take the high road in both his professional and personal life is exactly who and what Olbermann is.

And if you haven’t figured this out, let me clue you in on another score: your constant defending of him turns more people off than persuades them to your way of thinking, just as Johnny Dollar’s constant attacking of him does. Somewhere between the two roads is the real Olbermann and I assure you, he’s very much capable of doing stupid things, of making mistakes, and of being every bit as big of an idiot as Bill O’Reilly is. Stop apologizing for him and attempting to exonerate him no matter what he does. Your act is wearing as old as Olbermann’s.

  6. So lets get this straight. Dopy is commenting on BOR losing 274,000 viewers right?…Do i need to explain the stupidity of this or will someone else do it for me?

  7. Countdown finished 4th place in total viewers and TVNewser’s coveted “demo” on Thursday. Ouch!

  8. Missy, Bill-O is bothered, all right. And he shows it every time he opens his piehole about MSNBC…again. Let’s not be coy. Keith’s not the one obsessed with Bill, Bill is obsessed with Keith. Bill is like this big bull with a gnat on his nose that he can’t get rid of…and the gnat keeps stinging him again and again. Doesn’t matter how small or seemingly inconsequential the gnat is, it keeps stinging and stinging…

Why should Keith quit? His ratings do get a bit of a bounce from the attack-O’Reilly effect. People come because someone is at long last willing to call Bill on his crap, and some stay for the rest of the show. Some become loyal viewers.

Michelle, I got news for you: you don’t have to tell me that Keith Olbermann isn’t perfect. Not a news flash!! But neither is he the Son of Satan you and your little far-right friends keep trying to make him out to be. Boy, you folks are really frustrated that your attempts to paint him as a terrible person have managed to fail so badly, aren’t you? And you are SOOOO frustrated that his fans don’t NEED him to be perfect in order to be his fans, either!

You can keep trying to “frame” him in your bitter, nasty way as the worst human being imaginable, but that doesn’t make a difference to those of us who enjoy and admire him because we have been long waiting for someone who would call the authoritarian conservatives and the current US government on their garbage. And not only do it, but do it in an entertaining and fearless way. Your attempts to paint Olbermann as something evil and bad simply won’t work–not when the “worst” you can even TRY to pin on him is a limp “e-mail scandal.” Please…

Oh, and I repeat, I am not Keith, or anyone related to him, nor on his payroll, nor does he need me to do anything for him but watch his show. And this isn’t an act; it’s the real me. Guess what: I’m not trying to win hearts and minds here, so you need not lecture me on how I am failing at that task. All I’m trying to do is stand my ground and say “Sorry, people; I am not going to change. You are not going to change my mind, no matter what you say.” And I’ll keep saying it until some people get it through their thick heads.

And JR and Jack: you need not worry about KO’s ratings. He’s not worried. He’s just having a good time, not worrying about how far he is behind anyone else or whether he’s down on one night. Doesn’t matter. Bill O’Reilly, however, is running scared…and that is downright hilarious!

  9. Tanne, Tanne, Tanne….If your not Dopy, his mother or evil twin you must be a mind reader to make the statement that Dopy is not worried about his ratings…How exactly do you know that KO (I mean Tanne)….?

So BOR has lost 200,000 plus viewers…All that means is he is beating Dopy by a 6 to 1 margin instead of a 7 to 1 margin. To use a Baseball analogy that Dopy would understand, Its like the Devil Rays finishing in last place in the AL East by only 20 games this year instead of 30 last year…

ITS STILL LAST PLACE DUDE !!!!

    Comment by JR — June 30, 2006 @ 8:09 pm

  10. JR, I don’t know who is this “Dopy” you keep talking about. Dopey was one of the Seven Dwarfs, but he doesn’t have his own cable news show that I know of…unless Fox News hired him when I wasn’t looking.

Second, you really have to be crazy to think that it doesn’t matter when a guy who has been king of the ratings heap starts to slip, even if it’s only a little. a 7 to 1 margin can slip to 6 to 1 and then 5 to 1, 4 to 1, 3 to 1, 2 to 1, 1 to 1, and then…

As long as we’re using baseball analogies, your memory must be short, but I doubt Keith Olbermann’s is. Remember 2004? Remember how the Yankees were going to sweep the Red Sox in the AL series…the way the juggernaut always seemed to beat the poor cursed team…and then something happened, and the Sox won four in a row and it was buh-bye Yankees, hello World Series (which they won too)?

KO knows it and you bet he remembers it. He is smart enough to know that with time and persistence, David CAN beat Goliath. But in the meantime, he’s having a heck of a lot of fun being David and just aiming that slingshot. And how do I know? I don’t have to be him to know; he makes it quite obvious whenever he’s on the air.

And the fact that people like you keep on insisting the only people who could possibly think like me are KO himself or his family just goes to show how incapable you all are of wrapping your brains around the idea that someone out there might actually think differently from you…

  11. tanne, you are WAY over the top with your responses to some of these people. There is nothing at all in Michelle’s post that indicates she has any “right-wing” beliefs; she simply criticized Olbermann’s actions and some of the situations he’s got himself into. You did the same with Ira and Terrance on another thread. This has NOTHING to do with their ideology; they are just going after Keith’s behavior.

Keith is just a TV guy, OK? As I mentioned on another thread, I typically agree with O’Reilly’s stories, but I was VERY disappointed in his role in the whole Andrea Makris issue, and certainly cannot defend his every action.
But in general, I like the stories he covers and the positions he takes when confronting his guests and/or topics.

I guess you and your Media Matters friends can go after O’Reilly for what you believe to be his bias in reporting. But you honestly don’t see the irony in Keith attacking O’Reilly’s ratings? Here’s an analogy: I could make a few million $ this year (don’t I wish?), and Donald Trump could lose a billion. But he will still have more money than me, from now until eternity!!! Wouldn’t it look idiotic of me to sit here night after night saying “hey Donald, looks like you’re losing some of your wealth!”. Would anyone ever take me seriously, especially since I had NEVER attained those levels to begin with? Here’s another one: a few years ago, I was ~10 lbs. overweight, and this 400 lb. guy in my office was trying to tell me I needed to lose weight, and even told me how to do it! Do you think I listened to one word he said?

You see, tanne, I think there’s an expression, “the pot calling the kettle black” that may be in play here - basiclly, why would anyone take seriously the comments of the last place guy, when the first place guy is still in first place, albeit by a smaller amount?
