CNBC’s Kernen fooled by Hollywood PR stunt…?

CNBC’s Joe Kernen reported on Squawk Box yesterday that the debut of Pirates of the Carribean had a record weekend opening at the box office beating out the previous record holder Aquaman. Just one problem though. There is no film about Aquaman. It was a clever Hollywood PR stunt to tie in with HBO’s Entourage. Here’s the video

UPDATE: Okay so maybe it wasn’t a hoax. Though that ad seems like a hoax to me since it played it straight….

UPDATE 2: Kernen apparently addressed this issue this morning and says he was joking. Anybody got video of this?

  1. That video clip is hillarious. I mean, did nobody read a AP article or something that mentioned Spider-Man? Surely somebody on the staff knows about BoxOfficeMojo! That clip just makes me laugh. It’s a honest mistake, and Joe Kernen probably genuinely thought that there was an Aquaman movie. It was either a lack of research, or a very cruel prank by the office staffers.

Either way, it just makes me smile. It’s a harmless litle thing, there’s no scandal to be had. It’s just an innocent little blooper. Okay, maybe it’s bigger than a “little” blooper, but a blooper none the less.

  2. I only heard about this Aquaman thing by a quick glance at a TV screen showing the ad. It wasn’t until this happened that I realized it was bogus.

  3. I was watching Squawk Box when he said that and being a follower somewhat of Entourage, thought he was making a joke, and thought somebody on the set made a quick but direct Entourage reference in response.

  4. Who’s the fool, the fool or the fool who follows the fool?

Kernan just addressed this a few minutes ago on Squawk Box and played taped making it crystal clear that he was JOKING. In the clip they played he even mentioned Entourage. If you watch the show you know (a) that they have mentioned Entourage numerous times on the show before this week; (b) part of the schtick of the show is joking around as Kernan did in this case.

Are you going to put up the video of Kernan addressing this issue today?

  6. Seems to me that when YOU run the story it’s up to YOU to run the correction.

  7. Joking? Since when do reporters for CNBC make things up or joke around while delivering business news? The last thing in the world I want is somebody’s version of a joke folded into a business news report. CNBC and MSNBC are having some serious problems right now.

  8. #7 you’re a moron. You don’t deserve to watch CNBC…

  9. Actually he told the story twice during the Sqauk Box broadcast. His first story included the Entourage part, and then during the second hour he forgot to mention the Entourage tie-in. A person watching during the second hour had no clue he was joking.

  10. Kernen was clearly joking. #7 and anyone that thinks like this person: I forbid you from watching CNBC or tv in general. He likes to throw in from time to time a mention about the trans flux capacitor. You know, the thing that makes time travel possible (”Back to the Future” reference). He also throws in “Wall Street” references and will mention Bud Fox, Gecko, and Teldar Paper. #7 to answer your question: He has been doing this for a while when discussing the happenings of the day.

  12. This is understandable that money can make us free. But what to do if somebody does not have cash? The only one way is to try to get the loan and just college loan.
