Piling on…

Joe Scarborough wasn’t the only one at MSNBC to fire back at John Gibson over the comments he made on his radio show last week. Keith Olbermann tagged Gibson 2nd worst person in the world for the same broadcast. Transcript by me follows…

John, number one…I didn’t say I did “218 consecutive shows” as in 218 consecutive shows without a day off. I said WE DID 218 consecutive shows about Clinton/Lewinski. Of course I took days off - they’re called days off! Other point about this…you had to do the show because you were my back up here at MSNBC…fill in…sub…LAST RESORT!

Interesting parsing going on over this quote at Olbermannwatch…

UPDATE: It appears ICN struck a nerve over there because Olbermannwatch issued a subsequent entry addressing the parsing.

UPDATE 2: Had a longer response but I pulled it as I don’t have time now to do fact checking as I’m too busy and I’m not going to leave up something I’m not entirely 100% sure of.

  1. Kind of sad how things come around. Gibson’s 5 pm show where mostly everyone is still coming home from work gets almost 3 times the viewers Dolbermann gets from his great 8 pm primetime slot. Seriously, This guy is a real loser hahahahahaha.

  2. Reminds me of that famous lie by that newly-minted multi-millionaire: “I didn’t have sex with that woman, never!” Or that thunderous excuse by that notorious prevaricator Neal Boortz calls the French Poodlle: “I voted for the war before I voted against it.” It’s getting hard for this loser to fool even his few viewers, if any are left.

  3. So what is Olbermann trying to say? That years ago, he was more successful than Gibson? He’s making himself look like a complete fool, because Gibson works for a better network and gets much higher ratings than he does now! Of course, you won’t hear Spud or Brian Stelter point that out, they’ll just quote Olbermann as the “voice of God.”

  4. Spud, I have be travelling and missed all this as it happened but let me “correct” you post. I did not talk to J$ yet (maybe he can comment here) but…

Being a famous expert on the proper use of an ellipsis let me say that J$’s use of the ellipsis was not improper so you sense that you struck a nerve is off-base. That said, I am glad you raised the issue because the entire quote is more telling and it motivated j$ to back and look at that line again because it motivated him to go check the CBS transcript.

As folks can see from J$’s update, Gibson did, in fact, correctly quote Olbermann. KO did say “I” not “we” as he now claims. In other words, once again, Olbermann lies.

That Olbermann would lie about what he said in order to accuse Gibson of lying and then using that as the basis for attacking Gibson further (naming him a WPIW candidate) is hardly something new to Olbermann Watch readers where J$ documents Olby’s nightly fabrications, innuendos, mispresentations, half-truths and lies.

  5. Well, let’s see. I post a note about the “creative quotation”…er…I’m sorry…ellipsis…and that sparks a subsequent entry that even notes my observation. And then there’s what showed up in my in box this morning, which obviously you haven’t seen. So yeah, I do think I struck a nerve.

I’m not going to get into a debate over the accuracy of Gibson’s quoting. I don’t have that kind of spare time to type away like that.

  6. Well, as the nervy guy himself, I wouldn’t exactly phrase it as “struck a nerve”. I’d say that in my opinion you made a fair point, so I took appropriate action in response. As for Gibson’s quoting, you don’t have to get in a debate about it. The transcript, video clips, and audio clips all show Gibson’s quote was correct, and Keith’s response to Gibson was to lie about what he said to smear Gibson. But that’s nothing new.

  7. Oh good Lord, this is all so ridiculous! For years now, Olbermann has been saying that what upset him about his first gig at MSNBC was the number of consecutive nights that the topic of the show was Monica Lewinsky. Many of the times he’s talked about this, he’s said “we,” not “I.” The thing that upset him was NOT the number of CONSECUTIVE SHOWS HE PERSONALLY DID without missing a single night! The thing that upset him was THE NUMBER OF CONSECUTIVE NIGHTS THAT THE SHOW WAS ABOUT THAT TOPIC!

But now, because he used the word “I” instead of “we” ONCE, you’re all going to call him a “liar”? Oh please. How desperate can you get? Talk about parsing a quote to death. Read the CONTEXT, people: he’s not complaining because they made him go to work every night and he didn’t wanna. He’s complaining that every night, the show was on the same topic!!

And this crap about “He didn’t deny that he was refusing to get out of the bathtub”? What kind of silliness is that? How does John Gibson even know Olbermann was in the bathtub? Did he go into Keith’s bathroom looking for him? Why should Olbermann even have to stoop to denying this stupidity? Olbermann haters are always accusing him of hiding under a desk, in a bathtub, whatever. What’s next? In a box with a fox? Oh, no, wait, that would be too close to FOX.

Anyway, it’s all part of the same smarmy swiftboating campaign the far right has been attacking him with for years. Attack his ratings, accuse him of hiding in or under something, call him nuts, call him a fool, call him a liar, call him a sex fiend, call him whatever you think you can get away with.

And this time, it’s because he committed the mortal sin of saying “I” instead of “we”–and apparently his detractors think this is a terrible scandal in which he is trying to make himself look like Cal Ripken Jr.

    Now THAT’s funny!

In the meantime, Bill O’Reilly essentially blames a young woman for her own rape and murder because she shouldn’t have been out in a city drunk in the wee small hours of the morning. Yeah, sure. She was asking to be raped and murdered, just like a guy who leaves his wallet in his back pocket deserves to have it stolen, just like a family who leaves their door unlocked deserves to be burgled and maybe worse. Because Lord knows, the desire of the criminal to commit the crime trumps the right of the potential victim to be let alone. How can we possibly expect a man to refrain from raping and murdering a woman if he finds her drunk and scantily clad at night in the summertime and he knows he can get away with it? We can’t, ladies and gentlemen. We just can’t. At least not in Bill-O’s world.

But you don’t see any of our rightie regulars getting incensed about Bill saying that.

Oh well. Every time I see the crazily disproportionate amount of comments any tidbit of news about Olbermann draws on this blog vs. the amount of comments on the other news, I know why. Once again, it’s the frightened far right coming out to attack the man they fear, using any two-bit excuse they can dig up as an excuse to express their high dudgeon.

    Good job, Keith.

  8. If Gibson quoted him accurately, then Olbermann should either admit it, or just keep quiet. He should lie about what he said, change the wording to make Gibson look bad, and then smear Gibson.

The fact that you defend Olbermann even when he is proven to be WRONG says a lot.

    Comment by johnny dollar — August 8, 2006 @ 8:36 pm

  9. That of course should read “he shouldn’t lie about what he said…”

  10. Since Olbermann is the topic of this thread…

Drudge Report, TMZ.com, and TVNewser have all linked to the Anti-Defamation League’s condemnation of his Nazi salute.

Hardly a good public relations day for this man.
