MSNBC and Lieberman/Lamont results…

TV Week’s Ira Teinowitz writes about MSNBC not interrupting taped programming to air the Liebermann/Lamont results until 1 am…

MSNBC had made a determination earlier that it would announce the results of the primary on an MSNBC.com Webcast and then do wrap-up on “Hardball” later, a network spokeswoman said. MSNBC news executives weighed the news value of the story and decided a Web update and live show later in the evening would be sufficient coverage, she said.

The network began relying more heavily on documentary programming after Dan Abrams, a former NBC legal affairs correspondent and show host, took over running the channel in June, replacing Rick Kaplan.

Glenn Beck profile…

Media Life Magazine’s Toni Fitzgerald has a profile of HLN’s Glenn Beck…

Yet Beck is not a Fox News host but rather the newest host on CNN’s Headline News. He may seem an odd fit for a news network that long emphasized content over delivery, but his numbers are growing. Among adults 25-54, he is coming off his best month yet and has beaten MSNBC’s competing “Hardball with Chris Matthews” 15 times head to head in the key news demographic since his May 8 debut.

During July, “Glenn Beck” averaged 100,000 25-54s in the 7 p.m. timeslot, up 56 percent over the 64,000 averaged by “Showbiz Tonight” in the same weekday slot last year.

He also rose 30 percent among total viewers, from 142,000 to 184,000. Those averages were well above the 158,000 total viewers and 82,000 viewers he has averaged since his debut May 8, according to Nielsen Media Research.

Greta’s new digs…

The New York Observer’s Max Abelson writes about Greta Van Susteren’s new domestic abode…

Fox News anchoress Greta Van Susteren and her husband, John Coale, have traded in their fancy Essex House pied-à-terre for a penthouse—on Times Square.

The host of Fox’s On the Record and her husband, a D.C. lawyer, dropped $2.57 million for a 1,582-square-foot apartment on the site of the former Studebaker Building on Broadway at 48th Street after selling their Central Park South condo this summer.

Anderson Cooper interview…

The Houston Chronicle’s Mike McDaniel has a Q&A with Anderson Cooper…(via TVNewser)

Q: How long will the war go on before viewers grow “immune” to the bombing?

A: To me the story continues, and people seem really interested. We’ve had great viewer feedback. This is an important story, and even if I were back in the States, it’s the story we would be doing. So I feel like I should be here.

Q: Will you leave in time to report from the Gulf Coast for the Katrina anniversary story?

A: I want to be in New Orleans and Waveland, Miss., and points in between for that anniversary. I’ve been going back to New Orleans every few weeks. I think Brian Williams and I are two people trying to keep that story alive.

Grove on Olbermann…

Lloyd Grove dishes on a new “gimmick” he says he’s notice on Countdown…

At age 47, “Countdown” host Keith Olbermann has found a novel use for his MSNBC prime-time show: on-air shoutouts to the ladies in his life. Introducing a fake clip of Tom Cruise’s daughter Suri on Monday night, Olbermann announced that it was obtained “by our ‘Countdown’ L.A. deputy bureau chief, Katherine Tur.” That would be Katy Tur, a 2005 graduate of the University of California at Santa Barbara. Back in June, the Web site jossip.com reported that Tur was Olbermann’s date to an Al Gore book party, and they seemed to be more than just friends. After receiving no response to an initial request for guidance, Lowdown called the MSNBC flack again. Didn’t she get the message? “I did.” Any comment? “No.”

Juan Williams: The black Ann Coulter with pants?

Lloyd Grove writes about reaction to FNC contributor Juan Williams’ new book…

But two of his targets - Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton - have had just about enough of Juan Williams.

“I think Juan is trying to be the black Ann Coulter with pants,” Sharpton told me yesterday, responding to Williams’ critique of him as a cynical, money-grubbing self-promoter who encourages African-Americans to evade responsibility for problems by blaming others. “I have fought for social responsibility in the black community, unlike some of these guys who try to hustle right-wing politics for Fox News.”

Maria Bartiromo: Best known business journalist?

Marketwatch’s Jon Friedman, an occasional guest on Your World with Neil Cavuto, thinks so

Thanks to good, old-fashioned hard work, Bartiromo, 38, has outgrown the frivolous “Money Honey” label that the nickname-loving media stamped on her a decade ago. And with the passing of the legendary Louis Rukeyser, the 13-year CNBC veteran has deservedly become television’s best known business journalist. How well known? Even the Ramones’ Joey Ramone wrote a song about her.

“My long-term approach is to bring the biggest names in business on the air and have the viewers get direct access,” she said. “I ask questions that viewers want answers to — (but) not in a ‘gotcha!’ kind of way. The viewers of CNBC are the smartest, most sophisticated on the planet. You can’t fool that audience.”

And Bartiromo certainly enjoys her job. “I like business!” she said unabashedly. “People always ask me, ‘Don’t you want Katie Couric’s (former) job” on NBC’s “Today?” “NO! This gets me excited. I love the urgency of it. It’s phenomenally fun. I’m having the time of my life.”
