Too soon to tell?

Broadcasting & Cable urges caution in the media regarding Karr and the Ramsey case…

This time, we hope the press will show that it has learned its lesson and will let investigators sort out the case, rather than invent a tawdry daily soap opera.

There was some evidence that the networks were being more careful about convicting Karr on circumstance (or even his confession). On MSNBC, Clint Van Zandt, a former FBI profiler pleaded, “Let’s not be so quick to convict this time”—a reference, of course, to the previous circus. Fox’s Greta Von Susteren allowed that Karr might just be “a strange person who for whatever reason wants to confess to murder.”

Aaron Brown Update…

The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Gail Shister has an interview with Aaron Brown…

Brown finds it “odd” that none of the major anchors who covered 9/11 - ABC’s Peter Jennings, CBS’s Dan Rather, NBC’s Tom Brokaw, and Brown - are working today.

“I didn’t expect not to be working,” Brown says. “It’s the way things turned out. Nothing about TV surprises me. Ever. I did it too long.”

Brown isn’t exactly itching to work. Why should he be? He’s collecting an estimated $2 million salary for not working until his CNN contract expires June 30.

“I’m not interested in working 15-hour days, 48 weeks a year. I’ve done it. I don’t quite get why I’d do it again. Every now and then, I think of what I’d like to do.”

Fox TV Stations #1 for Morning News?

TV Week’s Michelle Greppi writes about Fox TV stations finishing #1 in key demos and how this could bode well for the launch of the upcoming morning program with Mike Jerrick and Juliet Huddy…

In May, for the first time ever, Fox Television Stations as a group finished No. 1 from 5 to 9 a.m. in the 18 to 34, 18 to 49 and 25 to 54 demos in its universe, said Frank Cicha, the Fox Television Stations senior VP for programming.

“We’re not talking about giant margins here, because nobody’s doing more than a 1%BD; to a 2 demo in the morning,” Mr. Cicha said.

The Fox group average lead is “a couple of tenths of a ratings point,” he said, citing Nielsen Media Research data.

Still, even a slim lead can pay off in more than bragging rights and premium prices for advertising spots, he said.

Looking ahead, the morning momentum suggests a better launch pad for the national morning show Fox has announced for early 2007 than the Fox-owned group could assemble in 1996, when it launched “Fox After Breakfast.”

Behind CNN’s Bin Laden Documentary…

The Rocky Mountain News’ Dusty Saunders writes about CNN’s “In the Footseps of Bin Laden” documentary…

Fox News may have better cable ratings, but CNN has Amanpour, by far the most respected international correspondent. It’s logical she would anchor the most complete biography of Osama bin Laden, the al-Qaida leader synonymous with international terrorism.

In the Footsteps of bin Laden, CNN’s two-hour biography, allows Amanpour to provide viewers with a full portrait of the elusive leader familiar to most only from the TV snapshots showing him, staff in hand, against a mountainous backdrop, or operating a gun.

Camp “Ramsey”…

CBS 4’s Terry Jessup reports on the media swarming Boulder, Colorado because of the Karr arrest in the Ramsey case…

There were at least a dozen of satellites trucks that broadcast live from sidewalk tents that are inches from the street.

“It’s kind of like a circus, it has that kind of environment,” said an onlooker.

Cable stations never stop and MSNBC’s Rita Cosby said her camp will be in Boulder as long as it takes.

“What are we getting tons of e-mails about, everybody is asking about this case,” Cosby told CBS4’s Terry Jessup.
