  1. O’Reilly has been on vacation a LOT this month. I like John Kasich, but I think Laura Ingraham needs to substitute more frequently when O’Reilly is gone. She hosted a few weeks ago, and the show was great.

  2. Missy is right. Bill is still on vacation, but the Factor has not lost much with John Kasich subbing for O’Reilly. It’s still outdrawing CNN and the rest of them, despite the empty boast CNN has had a marginal gain. It still has a long way to go.

  3. Missy, you are so right about Laura. She was great.I don’t know how these substitute hosts are selected.
Perhaps FNC wants to reinforce John’s show on Saturdays, and try to get new viewers. But I wander away when he is on Bill’s show.

  4. And TVNewser hasn’t noted that Countdown has dropped to 4th place in total viewers and 3rd in Stelter’s demo. You brought it up, Spud…

  5. As I mentioned earlier, O’Reilly has only done one Friday in the past three months; that includes the whole Israeli/Hezbollah conflict! I was thinking/wishing that maybe Laura Ingraham was going to become the permanent Friday host, if he’s decided to retire from Fridays. In the past he’s had three main guest hosts: John Gibson, John Kasich, and Tony Snow. We all know where Tony Snow is. John Gibson now has a radio show that’s still going during TOF (The O’Reilly Factor); he was able to sub on a recent special Sunday TOF though. So now it’s just John Kasich and Laura Ingraham. And they also do reruns a lot on Fridays this past year. And now it’s showing in the #s.

    I did? Funny, I can’t recall mentioning Countdown…must be having memory troubles…

  7. I like John Kasich and Laura Ingraham, yet still… if O’Reilly isn’t on, I tend not to watch. Same thing with his radio program; I like the Judge and Michael Smerconish, etc, but if O’Reilly is absent, I don’t usually listen. And, the weird part is: I’m not even that much of an O’Reilly fan!

  8. Hey everybody! Lets make excuses for BO instead of talking about H&C beating him in the demo. While I realize this is only for one month.. It might be constructive to actually address the numbers instead of spinning it.

  9. I want more of Ann Coulter…. in more way than one. She should fill in for Bill O.

    Comment by Roger — August 31, 2006 @ 10:30 am

  10. Spud, the point is that TVNewser spotlights ratings declines for personalities he doesn’t like, and ignores them for personalities he likes, and even promotes in Keith Olbermann’s case. Didn’t he make a big deal out of Countdown finishing 2nd a little while back? Now that ratings have spiraled downward, it’s not really fair that Brian is not saying anything.

  11. I have to disagree with Missy and Christine about John Kasich; as an ex-politician he makes for a weak TV host.

The first segment on Thursday’s Factor was a prime example. When losing Democratic Congressional candidate Paul Hackett began personal attacks on the other guest, former Bush Administration Iraqi spokesman Dan Senor, Kasich seemed totally flustered, unable to stop Hackett or take control of the segment.

Rather than bolster Kasich, FNC should cancel his Saturday show. Broadcasting is best left to professionals, not former politicians!

Finally, there is plenty of good in-house talent at Fox that they don’t have to go outside to hire Laura Ingraham or Ann Coulter as O’Reilly fill-ins.

    Comment by Ira — August 31, 2006 @ 12:22 pm

  12. Ira, you’re right about Hackett’s attack on Dan Senor. That was horrible, and Kasich should have stopped that name-calling immediately! I also think Kasich let the screechy Lauren Lake go on and on a few months ago, and it was intolerable.

You bring up good points about Fox’s existing talent. And surprisingly, Julie Banderas holds up fairly well in these talk shows, and I believe E.D. Hill would as well (based on her experience on the Radio Factor). Of course, John Gibson is always a reliable guest-host. But Fox should certainly put in someone a little more forceful than John Kasich when selecting a “fill-in” for O’Reilly.

  13. Oh boy. Speaking of TVNewser, which Spud linked to in this thread, check out the glowing tribute to Olbermann on the site’s ‘ticker’. Ironically, the first three words of this post are “Thank you MSNBC” and the last link takes you to an MSNBC.com press release. It made me laugh, it’s now obvious that TVN has resorted to e-mailing himself!

“Keith Olbermann’s Wednesday night commentary is getting a lot of buzz. Here’s the transcript. ‘So few news people today ask the hard questions let alone speak truth to power,’ an e-mailer says. ‘Olbermann stood up for free speech and all American citizens…’”

    Comment by Frank — August 31, 2006 @ 5:20 pm

  14. Missy: I remember that Rick Leventhal once subbed for O’Reilly and he was fine.

Everybody you mentioned is a good potential candidate (although Gibson is now busy with his radio show) and I will also add (once again) Harris Faulkner, who seems to be pigeon-holed doing the news breaks in prime time.

    Comment by Ira — August 31, 2006 @ 7:37 pm

  15. Ira: Falkner did a third of the Fox Report a few times when Shep and/or Trace were in Israel and did more than great. She’s a natural. That’s her nitch, and I like her there.
Kasich is an optimist. I like him better as a person than O’Reilly, but he’s not a good mediator in confrontational segments like the one mentioned above. I do like Laura Ingraham; she did great. I also think Michael Smerconish does great on the Radio Factor; is he locked in with MSNBC as far as TV goes?
Frank: I saw that on TVnewser too. He’s sure trying hard to make us think he’s a ideologue.
Missy: I wouldn’t take ED Hill away from F&F; she’s needed there. But Julie Banderas… she did great the week she filled in for John Gibson. I actually liked her better than him on Big Story.
Roger: Ann Coulter? Are you kidding? Yes. You were kidding. Michelle Malkin already tried.
And Terance, Terance, Terance: I’ve been talking about H&C beating O’Reilly, and O’Reilly not being a team player anymore, and O’Reilly taking all Fridays off for some time now right here on this blog! And I’m not the only one. At least half of the people who’ve posted here under this headline have been talking about it too. If you want to see previous days look to the right and click on the day you want. Don’t just pick one headline and throw out baseless accusations at all of us.

  16. LOL. You guys just can’t stand that not only is Olbermann getting props for last night’s masterpiece of a commentary, but that TVNewser is mentioning it…and that Olbermann is crediting TVNewser for tipping him off to the “Katie Couric Photoshop Diet” story!

  17. I thought I just heard a whisper. . . are you still there tanne? . . thought I heard something . . . a lot of buzz? . . where? . . Olbermann getting props for last place? . . . it’s been a busy news month, but the only thing he’s able to top is some show called “Fast Money.” . . . Ever heard of it? . . . m e n e i t h e r . . . . . . .

  18. Let me get this straight. The whole reason H&C beat BO in the demo is because of BO’s guest hosts?

    Comment by Terance — September 1, 2006 @ 8:32 am

  19. No Terance. Not even close.

    Comment by erljr — September 1, 2006 @ 10:17 am

  20. Ok, Erljr. I was just curious why the majority of these posts are about guest hosts? The guest hosts didn’t “anchor” more days out of the month than BO did…

    Comment by Terance — September 1, 2006 @ 10:42 am

  21. tanne: Sorry. I couldn’t help myself. You have said many a time that totally unrelated posts suddenly morph into critiques of your favorite MSNBC guy. You and Frank may miss that, but the rest of us don’t. But I guess I’m the first one to take the bait. Oh, woe is me! Notice I didn’t mention his name isn’t til #17.
Terance: there are two reasons why the majority of these posts are about guest hosts.
#1: Missy brought it up in post #1
#2: the decrease in the demo, backing out of the special Sunday Factor, not being a team player, wanting every Friday off, running reruns on Fridays, and taking all this vacation have been talked about ad nauseam; especially this past week or two.

    Comment by erljr — September 1, 2006 @ 11:12 am

  22. Many of the anchors take Friday off all summer. The ones that come to mind are Shep, Brit Hume, Gibson.

    Comment by petchy — September 2, 2006 @ 8:51 pm

  23. Which Gibson are you talking about? Charlie? Shep doesn’t take Friday off for the summer either. And Brit Hume always takes Friday off and works Sundays - and not just in the summer.
