Phillips’ open mic…

The Hollywood Reporter’s Paul J. Gough writes about yesterday’s CNN on air gaffe…

CNN apologized Tuesday after an open mike transmitted an anchor’s bathroom conversation with another woman live over the network as it was carrying President Bush’s speech in New Orleans.

“Live From” anchor Kyra Phillips had apparently left the set around 12:48 p.m. EDT Tuesday for a bathroom break while the news channel carried Bush’s speech marking the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Phillips’ wireless microphone was turned on and picked up about a minute and a half of a muffled conversation she had with an unidentified woman where she apparently talked about her husband, laughed and talked about her brother.

Rush and Molloy have a bit more on the subject…

The mishap had CNN producers cringing.

“I hope it doesn’t look like Kyra made a mistake, because it was actually a technical malfunction, not a human error,” an insider told The News’ Ken Bazinet.

  1. Right! The old “technical malfunction” excuse. Give me a break. The Clinton News Network is gaffing itself into “rampant” unprofessionalism.

  2. What? You think they PLANNED to broadcast someone’s potty break? She was bitching about her sister-in-law! I seriously doubt she (or anyone) did it on purpose to embarrass the president.

  3. So that was over a minute of live tv, and no one seems to have been monitoring the audio? Another “malfunction”? Remember Dana Bash’s “bu%ls&*t” comment over a Karl Rove video segment? CNN’s becoming as arrogant as the NYTimes and the Little Hitler in Iran–thinking they can say and do whatever they want, and just get away with it, because they think no one can touch them. Was there a personal apology made directly to the President by the anchor or the tech responsible for the “oops”? Didn’t think so… Maybe CNN should have its press credentials pulled for their “own protection” until they get all these “malfunctions” worked out.

  4. Arthur: Every one knows I bitch about my in-laws (and vice versa). Doesn’t this sound like something from a late night comedy skit? You seriously believe a major network would go that long without someone being near a toggle switch? (or are you having a “malfunction” too?) Did everyone leave the control room? With all those tv’s on, no one picked it up right away? Oh, I get it! Clever… Clearly they were making a statement–an editorial, an opinion piece.

Why Bush and the Administration doesn’t fight back is beyond me. They have the worst strategic communications program imaginable. Do they think they will cruise out of office, leaving Hillary to hold the Iran bag of sh*%, which she’ll promptly dump on the UN, and then Jeb will have clear sailing for his turn at 1600 Penn Ave. after the dust settles?

  5. Doesn’t seem like an editorial by CNN about Bush. If so the person would have been trashing him off camera, instead of just talking about her family. And it wouldn’t have been someone so easily recognizable and known.
It does make me wonder if someone was trying to embarrass Kyra. I have trouble believing the only way it could be stopped was by finding her and not by someone in the control booth.

  6. I think it’s very appropriate that CNN was found in the crapper yet again. Ratings prove that they’ve been circling the bowl for a long, long time.

  7. Why couldn’t they put on music or something? These networks are mostly live and you would think they would of had options in fact several options to use to cut or mute or over ride her mike.

  8. “Maybe CNN should have its press credentials pulled for their “own protection” until they get all these “malfunctions” worked out.”

You’d like that, wouldn’t you? Perhaps we should have a state-run media to make sure the government is appropriately respected. We could call it something like… oh, I don’t know… how ’bout ‘TRUTH!’

  9. This was so obviously not deliberate. An innocent mistake that has to be so embarrassing for everyone involved.

  10. Roger, just a reminder: Clinton has not been president for many, many years now. The sole reason why our country is in such a fuster cluck is because of the moron that you obviously voted for, george. Try to get over, if you can, the fact that Clinton led the country thru the most peaceful, successful economic boom in modern times. Sorry your guy couldn’t live up to that.

  11. C’mon. It’s like Romper Room at CNN these days. It’s another HUGE blunder by CNN, like Dana Bash’s comments about Rove that made it to air, the X over Cheney’s face, or putting hte name of the Presiden of Iran under Bush’s picture on air. The mistakes go on and on. And for the record, I voted for Sen. Kerry, Gore, and Clinton twice.

  12. Here’s what I don’t get, her wireless mic should be going to a reciever that’s going into an audio board mixer.
Why was the mixer channel that goes to her wireless mic left on?
If they would have had the level down or that channel on mute the audio would have never gone on the air.

  14. It’s hard to believe the technical mistakes CNN makes these days. Everyone makes mistakes, but I’m always blown away at how long CNN’s mistakes go on for. I remember a few years back when a technical person at CNN was cussing away about ballons during a presidential convention, and it went out live on the air for a full minute before anyone realized what was happening and finally cut the mic. It was stunning.

Somebody should create a CNN blooper reel.

Alright people, let’s revoke FOX’s press credentials to. It’s obvious they aren’t a news organization. Where are the attack dogs when FAUX pulls a stunt like this?

  16. Hey Texxas, you should be glad I mentioned Bill ( the has been) Clinton’s name at all. Actually, you’re correct in a way. I should have left that “boyle on the arse of our country” alone. He needs to be laying low or else John Walsh and Mark Klass will finally nail him for what that Bolognyo Romeo is really good at….and you KNOW what I mean.

  17. This is one of the funniest stories to come out of cable news in a while. I have really enjoyed all the pictures from “Naked Gun”….

Yes, reality is stranger than fiction - on CNN (James Earl Jones voice-over).

  18. IceMan: You seem to know how this stuff works. What happens when they go to commercial? It seems to me it would be a new feed, just like the President’s speech, so the anchor wouldn’t even have to turn off their mike. Is that accurate?

  19. I had a desire to start my business, however I did not have got enough amount of cash to do this. Thank goodness my close dude recommended to take the loan. Therefore I received the consolidation loans and realized my old dream.
