Well, it looks like no one watched Keith Olbermann’s rant against Donald Rumsfeld anyway.

It’s a shame Olbermann didn’t pull in more numbers. He was still beat by Nancy Grace and Paula even after the Rumsfeld commentary.

Glen beat Scarborough again, but only beat HarDball in the demo. And Nancy beat Keith again. We need Brian back!
Comment by erljr — August 31, 2006 @ 10:55 pm
But look at Beck’s numbers for 9 p.m. - they are even better! He may be taking away some H & C viewers. But I’m SURE he’s taking viewers away from Scarborough.
Rush has been saying he will think of retiring when there’s someone to take his place. I think that someone is Glenn Beck. I just love this guy!!!

Keith’s show is a flat out disaster and everyone should admit it.
Comment by Edward Schatz — September 1, 2006 @ 12:14 am
Considering his ratings are significantly higher during this summer than they were last summer, I would say that shows growth in the show…not disaster or failure.
It’s been a heavy news summer, and much of that news has been tabloid in nature which is why Ms.Grace (the irony) ratings have increased. Its been a busy news summer so CNN naturally benefits. FNC’s ratings have continued to trend downwards, but then they may have been unsustanably high in the first place.
Comment by BlogThat — September 1, 2006 @ 1:17 am
BlogThat, it is not good for MSNBC when viewers tune into other cable networks to get their news for any reason.
Comment by Goldfish — September 1, 2006 @ 5:39 am
Well, if they wanted to win news viewers back I’d suggest dumping the documentaries or at least trying to make them relevant. MSNBC’s ratings across the board up, but no where as much as CNN’s because when news happens people don’t instinctively turn to MSNBC like they do to CNN. Also, again Headline News benefits the most when there are major tabloid stories such the Karr fiasco because its major primetime show is Nancy Grace.

Anonymous: “the Rumsfeld commentary” didn’t make any sense. Read the transcript. Almost every historical reference was inaccurate or twisted in some way, his current facts were inaccurate too. And the run-on sentences made me have to keep going back to try to figure out (unsuccessfully) what he was trying to get at. The sports stories following were very good though. Newser said it was “getting a lot of buzz.” Where? Newser was the first and only place I saw it, and I haven’t seen it anywhere since until you brought it up here.
BlogThat: you may be right about the reason for FNCs totals decline, but the demo decline is a major problem; and it’s been going on for quite some time. And who are you quoting? http://www.redballoon.net/~snorwood/quote-rant.shtml
As far as your second post, the last thing MSNBC needs to do is redefine themselves AGAIN! They just settled on something, AGAIN; and in the past, problem #1 has been changing before they give anything a chance. Problem #2 has been trying to be lots of different things to please everyone, thus no one knows what to expect when tuning in.
Lastly, it’s not just Nancy Grace. Glen Beck, Prime News, and even the unlikely Showtime, are beating MSNBC almost every night! And every RERUN!

No wonder Keith Olbermann begged CNN not to hire Beck… :D
Comment by Cecelia — September 1, 2006 @ 11:13 am
He did? Where did you see this? How does he have any influence at CNN or HLN? Do you have a link?
Comment by erljr — September 1, 2006 @ 11:21 am
Olbermann did it several times on his show Countdown.
Once after naming Beck his WPITW, he told CNN it was not too late to back out of hiring Beck.
Comment by Cecelia — September 1, 2006 @ 11:46 am
Oh yeah I recall KO ripping on Beck BEFORE his show even started! Now, Beck is on his way to leaving Countdown and KO in the dust.
Comment by Terance — September 1, 2006 @ 11:53 am
I sometimes do see his WPITW segment, because O’Reilly usually goes to commercial break at that time. And I do remember Keith naming Beck to one of those positions, and making a snide comment about Beck’s ratings. So naturally, I figured if Keith hated the guy, he must be pretty good!
Beck’s got tons of personality and lots of fun segments. His ratings are fantastic for being such a new program!

Here’s the link from pro-Olbermann Media Matters on just one of Olbermann’s appeals to CNN not to hire BEck.

Missy,
During one on Beck’s nominations for WPITW during Countdown, Keith issued a direct statement to Beck that he should quit his radio program and get out the country.
Sorta lends a little perspective to Olbermann’s charge that Sec. Rumsfeld is trying to squelch speech… :D
Comment by Cecelia — September 1, 2006 @ 12:01 pm
Same numbers, same statistics: It’s FOX wll the way. Wonder why some are devoting so much attention to a loser like Olbermann. He has become a big joke.
Comment by RGL — September 1, 2006 @ 12:14 pm
Poor Keith. He is just great at lecturing others on things of which he himself is guilty. He is SO clueless!
Comment by Missy — September 1, 2006 @ 12:15 pm
The TVNewser lovefest continues, as Brian Stelter is now pumping up Olbermann’s book sales, in addition to refusing to post any of the criticism about the little-watched Rumsfeld rant the other night. When’s the last time Stelter posted something about a competing personality’s book? Didn’t Nancy Grace write one that charted much better?
Comment by Alfonso — September 1, 2006 @ 12:19 pm
I hope Olbermann’s book goes to #1 since his primetime unchallenged anti-Bush-Administration tirade.
That’s only to make it harder for Keith and MSNBC to bill him as being “nonpolitical” or unbiased….and as anything but the left’s version of Ann Coulter.

“Well, it looks like no one watched Keith Olbermann’s rant against Donald Rumsfeld anyway.”
You have to look at the aftermarket. Just like movies that don’t make their budget in the domestic market can recoup overseas and in video, news clips live on via sites like crooksandliars and YouTubes. I notice over 80 people uploaded the clip at Youtubes and tens of thousands watched it. Who knows how many hits Crooksandliars got?
Comment by Arthur — September 1, 2006 @ 1:41 pm
Wow, Arthur, you sure know how to spin. You belong on MSNBC’s P.R. staff, or for that matter, TVNewser.
Comment by Alfonso — September 1, 2006 @ 2:18 pm
Alfonso - if you think the PR departments of ANY of the nets are ignoring YouTubes, you go right on believing that. I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t have staff planting stuff. It’s called Viral Advertising and it’s the latest thing.
Comment by Arthur — September 1, 2006 @ 2:41 pm
And it’s not working for Keith Olbermann, because he’s finished 4th place in both total viewers and “the” so-called “demo” the last two nights. Sorry, you can’t hide the facts.
