Gretchen Carlson to Fox and Friends…

ICN has learned that Gretchen Carlson will replace E.D. Hill on Fox & Friends beginning this Monday, September 25th.

UPDATE: Here is the release…

FOX News Channel (FNC) today named Gretchen Carlson anchor and co-host of the network’s signature morning program FOX & Friends (7-9AM/EST), announced Bill Shine, Senior Vice President of Programming. Carlson joins co-hosts Steve Doocy and Brian Kilmeade beginning Monday, September 25th.

In making the announcement Shine said, “Gretchen’s warm personality and dynamic energy is a perfect fit for FOX & Friends.”

Prior to joining FNC in June 2005, Carlson worked at CBS News where she served as a correspondent and co-anchored the CBS Saturday Early Show. Before her tenure at CBS, Carlson served as an anchor/reporter for KXAS-TV (NBC) in Dallas, WOIO-TV (NBC) in Cleveland and WCPO-TV (ABC) in Cincinnati. She began her television career in Richmond, Va., as a political reporter for WRIC-TV (ABC). In 1989, before starting her television career, she was the first classical violinist to be crowned Miss America.

  1. At least they did good in choosing a replacement. :)

    Comment by Charles — September 22, 2006 @ 3:04 pm

  2. Gretchen is okay, but is a little bland if you ask me. Who knows, maybe bland will translate to big ratings for Fox.

    Comment by california dreamin — September 22, 2006 @ 3:17 pm

  3. Oh geez….from one wet blanket to another. Guess I’m back to Robin & Company. F & F has become a real snoozer.

    Comment by spiffo — September 22, 2006 @ 3:21 pm

  4. Gretchen is perfect for this job. I can’t wait to wake up to her every morning. A fresh new face that will greet you with a twinkle and a smile.

    Comment by craig — September 22, 2006 @ 3:37 pm

  5. Well, sound like she’s being put right back where she started. At CBS, she did the weekend morning show, and now she’ll do the weekday one for FNC.

    Comment by Chris — September 22, 2006 @ 3:47 pm

  6. I like Gretchen Carlson a lot.She has the personality for the F&F.

    Comment by JR — September 22, 2006 @ 4:13 pm

  7. This is not going to work.

    Comment by cella — September 22, 2006 @ 5:41 pm

  8. At least Gretchen seems to have a nice temperment. E.D. seemed a little too condescending toward Brian at times.

    Comment by Missy — September 22, 2006 @ 5:49 pm

  9. Smart, concise, and a former Miss America. What is not to like?

    Comment by Mark — September 22, 2006 @ 6:21 pm

  10. Another professional sports connection? Carlson’s husband is a big-time sports agent. And she’s hardly been at FNC any amount of time. Not very subtle, Mr. Ailes! First the NFL Commissioner’s wife, now this? (see my post under Skinner’s announcement on this ICN for more.)

Looks like Kirin should have married better. Patti Anne? Choose more wisely the second time around… Lauren Green? Plan your next career move carefully. The right groom is better than an agent…

From now on, they can drop the “Fair and…” tag line. It would be more appropriate to go with “Fox and Roger’s well-connected friends and business associates.”

    FNC keeps circling the drain…

    Comment by George — September 22, 2006 @ 6:23 pm

  11. George, using that “sports” connection…how would you explain Julie Banderas, Martha Mccallum, Kim Guilfoyle hosting shows after not being with the network long?

    Comment by Terance — September 22, 2006 @ 6:39 pm

  12. Terance…

    re: “how would you explain…?”

There is a sports connection with the ladies you mentioned. Chances are, Julie, Martha, and Kim went to college with football players.

Tongue-in-cheek, but I don’t see how any of this is the ruination of FNC.

To register on Gretchen, I’ve heard her go off on Hugo for the past several mornings, and it reminded me of E.D., the way she says what she thinks and phrases it bluntly. Now that I’ve seen this announcement, it makes perfect sense.

I like Grechen, don’t care for Hugo, and think this will go well. Remember, E.D. isn’t going too far.

    Comment by Mark — September 22, 2006 @ 7:16 pm

  13. I don’t think she will “blend” in with the rest of the Gang

    Now..I really like to know

What happened to Bridget Quinn?? Why is ED taking her place?? Did I miss something??

    Comment by Billie — September 22, 2006 @ 7:30 pm

  14. Billie, I am wondering, too.

    Comment by cella — September 22, 2006 @ 7:44 pm

  15. Who’s Hugo? I like Gretchen and couldn’t take E. D. She was always interrupting the guys and buttin in with her take on things. Now if they would just get rid of Steve Doofus and get someone with half a brain that would be great.

    Comment by sophia — September 22, 2006 @ 8:10 pm

  16. sophia, Hugo is Hugo Chavez, who has trashed the President repeatedly at the UN session and elsewhere this week.

And I’m certainly in agreement with you on Doofus. In another post I wrote somewhere on this board, I mentioned that I’m sick of Doocy and E.D. acting so condescending toward Brian. But I don’t think Gretchen will act that way, so maybe Doocy will lay off as well.

    Comment by Missy — September 22, 2006 @ 9:19 pm

  17. I am sorry to hear this. E.D. and Steve and Brian had great chemistry and could always make me laugh.

Brian was the mischievous child, Steve the professor, and E.D. was middle America - the glue.
She is one tough lady - married with 8(!) kids. She brought a simple common sense to the show.

As to Gretchen, I’ve seen a fair amount of her in various settings and there is no way she fits in. She is too fragile. Too politically correct and lacking in that raucous slightly ribald humor that makes that show a delight.

    Comment by Nootz — September 22, 2006 @ 10:00 pm

  18. She did so good at CBS, she’s bound to bring in the numbers at FNC.

    Comment by Stud — September 22, 2006 @ 10:02 pm

  19. If she did so great at CBS, why did they let her go?

    Comment by california dreamin — September 22, 2006 @ 10:05 pm

  20. Gretchen has subbed on this program before when E.D, was out for a few days, and I thought she did quite well. She blended well then with Steve and Brian, and there’s no reason why they cannot preserve that chemistry.

And please don’t cry for E.D.; she will do just as well in that hard news format. She has the moxie and personality to do it.

    Comment by RGL — September 22, 2006 @ 11:09 pm

  21. Carlson will have to do more than throw red meat to the conservatives to establish chemistry on the set and rapport with the audience. People could turn on this new trio really quickly if they don’t do well early. The old ensemble was pretty well established.

Why is there so much turmoil and unrest all of a sudden with the Fox&Friends franchise?

    Comment by George — September 23, 2006 @ 12:20 am

  22. I think after such a long run, it’s good to have change.
Speaking of sports references, it’s important to rotate players out when the team is not performing at capacity.
    Go get ‘em Gretchen.

    Comment by stacey — September 23, 2006 @ 1:00 am

  23. Nothing lasts forever. It’s funny how I’ve been reading a lot lately about the lack of chemistry on the weekend show. The weekend show has never been able to match the chemistry of Steve, E.D., and Brian, and it probably never will. And fixing the chemistry is not as simple as just replacing one of the players. It can never be easy following the best team to ever play the game. Go get ‘em Gretchen.

    Comment by erljr — September 23, 2006 @ 4:49 am

  24. Oh yeah and a few others came into FNC and started hosting…Bill Hemmer, Mike Jerrick, John Kasish? ….. Do they have sports connections too?

    Comment by Terance — September 23, 2006 @ 8:08 am

  25. Oh, that Hugo. Thanks, Missy. I was trying to think of a Fox staffer named Hugo.

    Comment by sophia — September 23, 2006 @ 10:08 am

  26. “FNC keeps circling the drain…

    Comment by George — September 22, 2006 @ 6:23 pm”

Yeah, George - they’ve lost ground - only outperform MSNBC AND CNN AND CNBC together now. If you add in HLN, they come in second to the rest of the cable world!!

ED will be missed on FNF (maybe she wanted to spend some early AM time with the kids), but she’ll be a great addition to the morning news bloc. Gretchen will carry on the spark of FNF quite well, IMHO. Ailes doesn’t need sports - he’s just a programming genius. Wait till Fox Financial starts next year - NBC can shut down the cable house completely.

    Comment by Jack — September 23, 2006 @ 4:46 pm

  27. Bridget Quinn has indicated she wanted more time off for her family.

    Comment by Paul — September 23, 2006 @ 7:49 pm

  28. I hate to admit it but there just HAS to be a sports connection. It’s all to convinient. On Gretchen…The one thing that impressed me about her was the fact she took no crap from that elitist, blowhard Julian Phillips. She can be balzy…but she just ain’t no E.D.!

    Comment by Roger — September 24, 2006 @ 9:10 am

  29. Gretchen Carlson? Why not Kiran Chetry viewers love Kiran.
Viewes do no know Gretchen to well.Kiran Chetry does a great job hosting F&F.

    Comment by Jeff — September 24, 2006 @ 6:58 pm

  30. I think that FNC viewers are polarized by Kiran. I think she does a decent enough job and I like her personality, but she may lean a little too leftward for the weekday show. The fact that viewers are not as familiar with Gretchen is probably the reason that she was chosen. Most people don’t feel one way or the other about her.

    Comment by california dreamin — September 24, 2006 @ 7:57 pm

  31. I really like Gretchen and I’m glad she has the new gig. I will tune to F&F more often now!

    Comment by pat — September 25, 2006 @ 11:20 am

  32. Kiran has never expressed any political bias in all the years she’s been at FNC. She should have been the choice. Gretchen has ZERO personality.

    Comment by spiffo — September 26, 2006 @ 7:44 pm

  33. spiffo….I agree, I don’t think that Kiran is a political type of person. Kiran doesn’t act like she cares any more for one party than the other. At the same time, I can tell that she is socially liberal. She’s still talented and has a good personality, but just a tad too lib in some ways, and polarizing if one goes by some of the comments that people make about Kiran in the fan groups.

    Comment by california dreamin — September 27, 2006 @ 5:36 pm

  34. I love ED and will miss her in the mornings. I used to turn to Fox & Friends as soon as I woke. Now some mornings I don’t even listen in. Gretchen doesn’t do it for me. I love Brian and think Steve adds a lot to the show. Gretchen is too boring and goody-goody. You’ve messed up this time Fox. I guess all good things must come to an end!!

    Comment by Debbie — October 6, 2006 @ 4:30 pm

  35. I love Gretchen! She is a wonderful addition to Fox and Friends. E.D. didn’t seem to have her heart in the show anymore and appeared to dislike Brian.

  36. I’m sorry, I have been trying to deal with Gretchen but she is so damn out of place and makes no sense at all, ugh can’t stand when she talks!!

    Comment by Niki — February 13, 2007 @ 11:27 am

  37. Gretchen doesn’t “get it.” The show is just no fun with her. Fox News missed the boat by not replacing E D with Kiran. The chemistry is not there, and Gretchen seems to be nervous while on air. (Same as Lauren Green). She just isn’t quick enough and has a hard time talking off the cuff. Forget the weekend show. It never rebounded after Juliet and Mike departed. Seems beyond hope. Kiran couldn’t make that one work, but she would have been fabulous in Gretchen’s place. The show is just about unwatchable. Thank God for Steve and Brian. Brian’s wit carries the show.

    Comment by Claire — February 17, 2007 @ 3:49 pm

  38. I may be a little late getting in on this. When E.D. was moved off F&F I assumed it was her choice to be able to spend more time with her family. Steve gives the show a folksy side and a lot of vague useless weather info. Brian thinks every event in the world is sports related and the effeminate one who gives celebrity news makes me want to retch. Kiran Chetry, Mike Jerrick, and Juliet Huddy were unbeatable on the weekend show. How they chose Carlson over Chetry is beyond my comprehension. A sports connection may not be the answer. Having lived in the Richmond Virginia area my whole life, I would suggest that anyone with access to Lexis-Nexis do a little search for the period between Aug 1990 and the end of 1991. I know the event I am thinking of occurred not too long after she got here on her first TV gig, but I can’t pinpoint it any closer. Happy hunting.

    Comment by Jack Owen — February 26, 2007 @ 1:33 pm

  39. Should have kept Kiran. Gretchen just doesn’t have a personality. Seems like Steve and Brian are always covering for her because she’s not sure about what she is doing.

    Comment by GLORIA — March 5, 2007 @ 3:45 pm

  40. Many of us at work belive that Gretchen is doing very well she has improved and got the show back on track.
The weekend show is a different story.
They need someone (woman)that can help the show not kill it.

  43. Loyal F&F fan: Why is it so difficult for the “shirts” to recognize talent and chemistry?? Why did they keep Jullian Philips so long? Kiran and Julliet were the best. The current three are un-watchable.I will tune in to CNN and watch Kiran if they adopt an F&F format. Wise up FOX, read your viewers e-Mails and understand that you can’t judge talent. P.S. I heard McDonalds is hiring. Signed: Un-watchable!!!!

  44. I’m done with FOX for awhile. I’ll join my husband in watching Mike & Mike the rest of this week and start with CNN/Kiran Chetry next Monday morning. Sounds like Alisyn is going to be in and Gretchen out if this week is any indication. And just when Gretch was fitting in with Doocy & Kilmeade. I’ll miss them.

  45. what happened to Juliet and Mike? I thought they were given a new show. Does anyone know?

    Comment by suzi — April 15, 2007 @ 8:15 am

  46. Replacing E.D. Hill with Gretchen Carlson was a hug mistake. They should have put Kiran Chetry in her place. Gretchen is too cold, doesn’t ever sound like she knows anything about anything. She acts like she is superior to the other and the way she talks to viewers who call in is arrogant. I am no longer watching Fox and Friends without E.D. Hill and Kiran Chetry. The weekend show is a bust and I absoulety do not watch anymore and never will.

    Comment by Sandra Skay — May 28, 2007 @ 3:27 am

  47. I agree that Gretchen has been just terrible for F&F. She is slow on the uptake and quite the “proper little lass.” Sugar wouldn’t melt in her sweet little mouth. She’s quick to criticize Steve and Brian, yet totally mispronounced some simple word yesterday and even later seemed to have no clue about what the new item was about! I don’t even think she’s cute - at least not compared to the other Fox ladies. She brings the female IQ down considerably - I’m embarrassed for her. She is supposed to be so smart (valedictorian/classic violinist/Stanford & Oxford) but to me she doesn’t bring any common sense or reason to her job. Poor fit - a real disappointment.
