Sigh…

I suppose it was inevitable that it would show up somewhere in the MSM. It figures it would be Page Six since they wrote that over the top story on Olbermann’s mail threat a few weeks ago. I’d hoped that it would stay out of the MSM because this is really a private matter and the “scorned” party in this case has an agenda that goes way above and beyond the “jilted lover” angle and comes way too close to “Fatal Attraction” territory with its single minded obsession if you ask me. But it broke, so ICN is covering it…albeit in so much as to note that it broke. If you want more detailed information, find another blog…

  1. LOL is this a joke??

  2. Spud, I think you’re absolutely right. This is a private matter, and should not have been brought up. But I have a tough time feeling any sympathy for Olbermann. After all, how many times has he mentioned Bill O’Reilly’s loofah? It seems like poetic justice to me.

  3. I can see why you didn’t want to post this. But thanks for the link. I’m sure Olbermann is eating this stuff up. All publicity is good publicity, unless you’re #1.

  4. Any ideas of who leaked this non-story to Page 6?

    Comment by Olbermann Apologist — October 9, 2006 @ 12:00 pm

  5. As of this writing, TV Newser has ignored this item, instead leading with the North Korea coverage headed by a cheap shot at FNC from, who else, an e-mailer/tipster!

  6. Sleazy guy. What the hell? Sleep around with his fans then dump them? Not much in bed either? LOL

  7. This ” scorned party” sounds like an overly obsessed wingnut to me. No idea if there is any truth to this at all but wouldn’t surprise me to find out this is a case of someone mixing up reality with their fantasy world.

  8. Since the “NEWS” channels like to cover National Enquirer type stuff….I wonder if any of them will have her on as a guest?

    Comment by Terance — October 9, 2006 @ 12:33 pm

  9. Terance, I’m sure some channels would love to have her on if she’d agree. I have a problem with someone who calls out others’ hypocrisy being a hypocrite himself. But again, the key words are “if this is true.” I have to admit I’ve been watching him with a more guarded attitude.

    Comment by Char — October 9, 2006 @ 1:20 pm

  10. Ira:

How much you want to bet the “tipster” is Brian himself, or at least one Of Olby’s groupies.

As for the blog mentioned by the NYPost, I agree that this is a bit of poetic justice and illuminating of Olbermann and his followers. They love to dish dirt on their adversaries (BOR’s loofah, Limbaugh’s marital, medical and legal issues, Ailes’ weight, Cooper’s trips, etc.), yet can’t handle it when they get some in return.

Yes, I agree that the News Corp owned Post’s posting of the blog is no coincidence. Olby has blasted that company and its subsidiaries and employees for some time now. And since FNC won’t mention his name on the air (which is what he has been trying to get them to do), they probably outsourced their dirty work to the paper.

I just wonder if Olby will launch into a “special comment” tonight, accusing all of this of being a coordinated hit on him by Rupert Murdoch, The White House and Karl Rove for “speaking truth to power”.

  11. Spud, I agree with your reluctance to want to post this story. But, “what goes around comes around” as the old saying goes. The others are right about how Olbermann likes taking shots at the personal lives and weaknesses of others. As for how MSNBC and Olbermann should handle this, the smart thing would be to ignore it. They would just be giving this person more airtime and attention by bringing it up (and she may turn out to be very unstable).

    Comment by Scott — October 9, 2006 @ 2:41 pm

  12. Spud,

Thank you for posting this and letting the readers decide if it’s noteworthy. Brian Stelter of TVNewser opted for censorship of his readers instead.

  13. Just to echo the statements of others…

If it were anyone else, I’d think this was tacky. But Olbermann? He devotes his life to trashing others with this kind of thing!

    Comment by Missy — October 9, 2006 @ 3:26 pm

  14. Exactly. Is anyone claiming that if the same exact article appeared about O’Reilly, Chris Wallace, Anderson Cooper, John Gibson, or anyone else Olbermann criticizes was in a newspaper, that he wouldn’t do a story on it?

On the TVN front, here’s a new suggested quote for the top of the site:

“I’m Keith Olbermann and I approved this message.”

    Comment by Frank — October 9, 2006 @ 3:40 pm

  15. Isn’t the post owned by FOX News?

    Comment by Nobody — October 9, 2006 @ 4:49 pm

  16. Love it! Dobermann always making falafel and loofah jokes so don’t go sighing… for this guy

    Comment by Lurker — October 9, 2006 @ 5:54 pm

  17. O’Reilly was sued for sexual harrassment and settled out of court for $10 million+. If true, all Olbermann is guilty of is having bad taste in a CONSENTING woman.

    Comment by David — October 9, 2006 @ 6:09 pm

  18. Umm, Where are you getting this $10+ million figure? The women probably had BOR on tape saying dirty things to her but I doubt it was sexual harrassment. She was probably a willing participant. He paid up because he doesn’t want that dirty stuff out.

  19. There must be witches about. Why else would anybody sleep with this creep?

    Comment by cella — October 9, 2006 @ 6:26 pm

  20. He wanted a little Caribbean honey on the side? I don’t think so. Olbermann is a pig.

    Comment by Lakiesha — October 9, 2006 @ 9:14 pm

  21. This is a way old story, Spud. It was all over Jossip and Gawker back in JULY. Why does Page Six finally notice, I wonder? It’s hardly news, or even new.

“She was probably a willing participant.”

Yeah, those pages were just drooling over Foley, too…

    Comment by Arthur — October 9, 2006 @ 9:27 pm

  22. I know it’s old. But I don’t consider Gawker or Jossip part of the MSM. Page Six on the other hand. And yes, the timing is very suspect. I don’t for a second think they “finally” noticed. I think they had that one “in the chamber” for a while.

    Comment by Spud — October 10, 2006 @ 12:06 am

  23. Good. Good.

    Comment by Phil — October 10, 2006 @ 12:17 am

  24. Spud, of COURSE the timing is suspect. The whole STORY is suspect. It always has been, because it’s full of crap–and there’s no substance to it whatsoever. It’s garbage that Olbermann’s enemies made up for the express purpose of attempting to deal what the Fox Fanclub would think of as “poetic justice” to him when it is no such thing whatsoever. It has the earmarks of a classic right-wing smear all over it, and Rupert Murdoch was only happy to help. That’s what the pathetic peddlers of the pathetic story finally realized after many months of trying: they read the Post’s treatment of the fake anthrax-letter story and finally got a bright idea. “I know what! Let’s give this story to the Post! They’ll print ANYTHING!”

And it sure doesn’t hurt that it happens in October, right before an election, when Olbermann is saying things against the party in power that are drawing attention.

It’s all planned. It’s all false. And it’s all disgusting.

  25. I’ve watched Countdown since its very early days. And gossip reporting has been, from the very beginning, an integral part of Countdown. I’ve watched Keith have a field day as various other “scandals”, also unsubstantiated, emerged about people like Bill O’Reilly (Andrea Mackris) and take great delight in Rush Limbaugh getting busted with contraband Viagra. What was he engaging in when he reported THOSE pecadillos? I’m sorry but I think it’s more than hypocritical to think that it’s okay for HIM to report on this kind of stuff but no one should report it when it happens to him? True or not, it seems to me that he’s done his fair share of gossip reporting and turnabout is fair play. And gossip is always questionable as being true or not but it’s always been a part of Countdown and gossip in particular about his news competitors has always been a feature of Countdown. So why shouldn’t his competitors report on it when it happens to him? And I just find it very hard to believe that as low as Olbermann’s ratings are that he’s some sort of threat to this administration. I think the more likely explanation is that he delivered a rant against the Post after he claimed they got facts wrong regarding his antrhax scare and the Post struck back. Add in the fact that they are indeed owned by Rupert Murdoch and Keith makes a regular habit to attack Murdoch’s minions, including calling Chris Wallace a “monkey”, Roger Ailes a “fat ass” and any number of pet names for Bill O’Reilly, and well, you have many good reasons why the Post ran with this. He himself admits he “punches up” to get Fox to react to him. This time, they just happened to do so via the Post with salacious details about his personal life. I’m not saying it was right, but I hardly think KO is as innocent as you’d like to potray him to be.

  26. If this story is true, it reinforces my suspicion this faux-thuggish guy has been acting they way he has been mainly from what is hinted at here - he lacks the testosterone, and therefore tries to fake himself off as a MACHO on the air.

That blue pill could have done wonders and maybe even transform him into what he is - an ordinary, humble big kid with no pretensions. About time he is brought down to earth.

  27. Spud, of COURSE the timing is suspect. The whole STORY is suspect.

I don’t think the story is suspect in as much as that there was a tryst…

    Comment by Spud — October 10, 2006 @ 10:11 am

  28. I don’t know about that. I think she had some sort of personal contact with him because I read that site from beginning to end last night and uh-well, it was an interesting read to be sure! But there was some mention on there about a tie he supposedly gave her, and apparently, that tie hasn’t been since the weekend she claims she hooked up with him. I know it’s not a lot to base a story’s truth on but I do find it very odd the tie has never been seen again because I can tell you that I’ve darn near memorizied the guy’s wardrobe becuase he tends to wear the same things over and over and over and over again. So it did leave me wondering.

    Comment by Alison — October 10, 2006 @ 11:58 am

  29. The more outspoken Keith becomes right before an important election, the more his enemies will try to smear him. I will wait for facts before I judge.

    Comment by ladyone — October 10, 2006 @ 12:00 pm

  30. I don’t think this is about politics except in the vaguest of terms. NewsCorp and Fox lean right and that’s why KO goes after them. He also has admitted he likes to hit “up” and hopes that Fox will give him the free publicity. This time they did, via the NY Post but it was about a personal matter that I’m sure he wishes had never seen the light of day. I would like to think that if this was a Rovian plot that they could come up with far worse, and far more incriminating evidence against him. Besides, Keith’s ratings still suck. His commentaries get a lot of play on the liberal-leaning blogs and websites but I bet if you walked outside, asked 10 people who he was, most would still associate him with SportsCenter and ESPN, not name him as a powerful critic of this administration.

    Comment by Alison — October 10, 2006 @ 12:31 pm

  31. That’s because he’s not a powerful critic of this administration. He’s not even willing to debate folks from the other side. And to keep his image in check within the TV business, he has a 20-year-old kid doing his dirty work. That’s not exactly what I call “powerful.”
