American Morning vs. Imus…

After seeing Imus beat American Morning two days in a row (and come within 4,000 of beating it last Thursday), I decided to look at the numbers for the two programs for this month to see if there are any trends visible. The results are inconclusive. Imus has beaten American Morning three times this month but Imus’ ratings have swung violently up and down as have American Morning’s to a lesser extent. I specifically looked to see if American Morning’s ratings had changed because it went from four hours to three starting last week and whether that lost fourth hour was responsible for any decline. Again, the results are inconclusive. American Morning posted ratings in the same neighborhood as the last few days before the switch. It also posted ratings 100,000 viewers higher.

The only takeaway I got from looking at the data is Imus only beats American Morning when Imus posts strong numbers and AM posts sub 500,000 numbers. More data is required before any real conclusions can be made about any possible trends between the two shows.

  1. Imus is better than anyone at what he does.

  2. I generall watch Imus in the morning (he has all the lefty commentators/columnists & thus it’s good to get all points of view) and something that is obvious is that he’s had on a lot of big-time country artists on his show of late. In the last few weeks he’s had Hank Williams, Jr., Dwight Yoakam, Dierks Bentley and Vince Gill visit the show. They usually stay for the entire show (3+hours) and perform a lot of their songs. I know I usually only watch the show from 6:30 -7:30 or so, but I Tivo those dates…..perhaps I’m not the only one interested in seeing those artists perform?

I certainly don’t tune in to see him give man-love to Harold Ford, John McCain, John Kerry or Joe Biden, as he often does.

  3. I enjoy Imus until he starts going on and on about the ranch, his food line, cleaning products line, autism and his wife shows up. Then I change the channel.

  5. Lurker! How could I forget Bernie’s UN-forgetable Cardinal Egan. He seems to rattle that stuff off faster than the disclaimers after a car commercial…but perfectly paced at the same time. It’s classic. Imus probably pays him peanuts. I’ve seen Bernie’s digs and it’s no mansion in Conn. or even a ranch in New Mexico. It’s more like Drabs-ville, Nebraska.
