MSNBC’s Matthews ruins Gubernatorial debate?

The St. Petersberg Times editorializes against Chris Matthews’ moderation of last night’s Florida Gubernatorial debate…

Moderator Chris Matthews of MSNBC’s Hardball apparently forgot it was a debate between candidates for governor, not Congress. He wasted most of the hour by asking questions about the war in Iraq, a New Jersey Supreme Court decision on gay marriage and the Mark Foley sex scandal. He rehashed the 2000 election. He burned up time demanding that Crist label himself as a fiscal conservative or a social values conservative (fiscal) and trying to get Davis to declare himself a liberal (he’s not). Matthews got bogged down in a lengthy discussion over a paper trail for electronic voting machines, and he apparently didn’t realize there is a property insurance crisis in this state until he was being driven in from the airport. This is what happens when a Washington television personality brings a national agenda to Florida’s race for governor.

  1. Is this what MSNBC is touting as part of their election coverage? Sheesh. This is pathetic!

  3. I knew this was going to be a train wreck. How did Chrissy get this assignment?
I tried to watch for a few moments. But, just as I figured,
this ego maniac couldn’t play the role of moderator. He just had to spew his liberal venom, and insert himself as the star. Sick! Pathetic!

  4. Why would anyone want this overbearing blowhard moderating anything? I bet he thought a passport was required to enter the state….

    What a doofus………

  5. How can anyone who has ever listened to the anti-Bush 15 min.tirades by Keith Obermann and Slobbering Matthews, accuse FOX as the biased channel?

  6. What moron thought up having MSDNC run this debate in the first place. Matthews is nothing more than a political assasin who’s only interest is in getting his face and views on as many tv screens as possible. Total waste of valuable voters time.

  7. First, I think the critique of Chris talking to much about national politics is fair.

For those citing bias…how about thinking for yourself for once instead of parroting profiting partisians like Rush and Hannity. Who are nothing more than right’s version of Michael Moore and Al Franken…all equally pathetic and laughing all the way to the bank on your intellectual shallowness.
Admit it..you think Chris is a liberal, which is today’s political climate is defined as a lack of support of our misguided (and liberal) war in Iraq, and was on him from the start. You’re are just as biased as you claim Mathews to be. You’re the kind of person who’s views are defined by the people you like instead of the principles you believe in.
Case in point, the liberal (whom you support as a conservative) G.W. Bush:
    1. Takes our money and gives it to the Iraqi’s to flush down the drain. Kind of sounds like a liberal social program to me.
    2. Lowers taxes (nice job Mr. President), but spends money like it grows on trees in Crawford.
    3. Refuses to protect our borders.

I could go on…but I’m going to stop and give you the time to think a little.

  8. Thanks for the enlightenment Chris, er I mean Ed. I now realize the shallowness of my opinion and promise to do better in the future. Maybe I will watch a rerun of Olberman to begin my rehabilitation.

  9. How is Fox News called biased and MSNBC not? Easy. Olbermann and Matthews are talking heads, not newscasters. they’re under no obligation to present a completely objective viewpoint. Fox News on the other hand is biased up and down the line. O’Reilly and Hannity are obviously right-wing, but they’re not journalists, they’re political commentators. but when supposed newscasters like Brit Hume, John Gibson, and Neil Cavuto are spouting GOP talking points, expect to be labeled as biased.
