Scarborough vs. O’Reilly…

Last night on Scarborough Country, Joe Scarborough responded to Bill O’Reilly’s criticism of NBC News’ decision to label the Iraq situation a “civil war”. Segment transcript follows…

SCARBOROUGH: And you know, Matthew Felling, though, when we‘re talking about bias, I got to—let‘s bring in Fox News anchor Bill O‘Reilly because he actually went after NBC News for the decision to use the term “civil war” to describe the situation in Iraq. Take a look at Bill O‘Reilly‘s attack on NBC.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

BILL O‘REILLY, “THE O‘REILLY FACTOR”: NBC News has declared that there is indeed a civil war in Iraq. Now, that‘s not shocking because NBC is the most aggressive anti-Bush network these days, as they have made a calculated effort to woo left-wing viewers. The question is, Is NBC wrong about Iraq? The answer is, Yes. Of course, the American media is not helping anyone by oversimplifying the situation and rooting for the USA to lose in Iraq, and that is what some media people are doing.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

SCARBOROUGH: I think that‘s insane, that he‘s suggesting there that NBC is rooting for America to lose in Iraq. Bill O‘Reilly has had questions about this war from the very beginning. Bill O‘Reilly knows we‘re engaged in a civil war over there. I‘m stunned. What is going on at Fox News? Why is Bill O‘Reilly claiming that my network, NBC News, is rooting for terrorists? That‘s truly insulting to me.

The Most, Tucker to be cancelled?

Jossip is saying it’s hearing that The Most and Tucker may get axed…

An insider tattles to us that there have been “lots of closed door meetings” regarding newlywed Alison Stewart’s 3pm show The Most, which debuted in May. Obviously execs don’t appreciate its worldly mix of news and entertainment: We’re told to expect to see it cut next.

Meanwhile, a timeline is arising for the futures of Rita Cosby and Tucker Carlson. We already told you that Rita – who lost her own primetime show Live & Direct – was getting the ax. Her exit from the building, we hear, is imminent. And as for Carlson, whose Tucker has been hanging in there with a downsized staff? A February cancelation announcement is scheduled, says our source. All of this on top of the impending series of layoffs expected at the news channel under NBC 2.0.

CNN announces Chistianity special…

CNN announced this morning that it will air the two hour “CNN Presents: After Jesus-The Earliest Christians Explores Surprising History of World’s Largest Faith” Wednesday, December 20th at 10pm ET…

As two billion Christians prepare to celebrate the Christmas season, CNN will debut a sweeping documentary on the tumultuous early years of Christianity – from the crucifixion of Jesus Christ to the conversion of Constantine, the Roman emperor who first legalized Christianity in 313 A.D. CNN examines how the earliest Christians spread their message, despite infighting over the faith and violent persecution by Rome.

The two-hour special, CNN Presents: After Jesus – The First Christians, premieres on Wednesday, Dec. 20, at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. The documentary replays on Saturday, Dec. 23, and Sunday, Dec. 24, at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. All times Eastern.

Immediately following Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection, the first Christians were challenged to define their faith. Two of Jesus’ disciples – Peter, who preached that the followers of Jesus had to be Jewish, and Paul who argued that this new faith must be available to all – would emerge as Christianity’s first and most influential leaders. Their eventual consensus, that Christianity would be available to all through conversion, and their missionary zeal throughout the Roman Empire, helped the new faith to spread rapidly. But Christianity’s growing power was also a threat to the empire, so the Romans killed Peter and Paul and other early leaders. Christians were so brutally persecuted that Christianity’s survival was repeatedly in danger. That Christianity eventually became the world’s largest religion is perhaps the faith’s second biggest miracle.

Moody on “civil war”

FNC’s John Moody a comment about the term “civil war” with regards to Iraq. (tip courtesy of Johnny Dollar)

“Some are using the term [civil war] to indicate failure, not inside Iraq, but of US policy in Iraq. We’re unwilling to fall into that tender trap. We’re not using the term because there are non-Iraqis in the fray, and that makes it something different.”

UPDATE: This was an editorial stance that was discussed on Special Report with Brit Hume. To avoid confusion about whether this was some sort of official PR release from FNC, which it obviously wasn’t, I’m rewording the entry…

Tuesday’s Numbers…

Deal or No Deal re-airings are really inflating CNBC’s primetime numbers. It turned in over 1 million viewers last night placing it firmly in 2nd behind FNC at 8pm. Here’s what I don’t understand. Bearing in mind that I’ve never watched the show on NBC, I don’t know how these viewers are finding the show on CNBC. Is NBC advertising the CNBC re-air on NBC? Whatever the reason, they’re apparently only interested in that show because they left en masse when Mad Money re-aired at 9pm.

Dan Abrams on the November numbers…

GM Dan Abrams’ memo to MSNBC staffers on the November ratings…

You did it again! Congratulations to everyone on another blockbuster month for the newly energized and surging MSNBC! For the total day we were up a whopping 44% in the key demographic and 25% with total viewers compared with November 05. Competitively, this was our best month since February 02! In prime time, we were up more than any other cable news network: up 70% in the demo, and 47% among total viewers. That earned us our best competitive position in prime time since November 01 and made us the 2nd fastest growing channel on all of cable. And once again, Countdown beat CNN for the month in the key demographic.

We also got off to a great start for the month of December (those ratings began Monday). In prime time on Monday, we beat CNN by 29% in the key demographic. In fact, for 11 hours on Monday we bested CNN and beat Fox for three hours.

Its official, we are on a roll.

Let’s keep it going!

Frank on The Factor…

Barney Frank will be taking on Bill O’Reilly tonight on The Factor…

Lou Dobbs: Populist?

Mother Jones’ Sridhar Pappu has a profile of CNN’s Lou Dobbs…

Perhaps more than his peers, Dobbs has used cable’s niche messaging and agitated viewers to refigure the role of news anchor. While Brian Williams may, in gross numbers, have more viewers, Dobbs’ daily interpretation of the news flickers more brightly both on the 13-inchers sitting next to microwaves as supper’s being readied, and on the flat-screens tucked into offices on the Hill.

“One of our goals at CNN is to reassert our primacy in political coverage,” says Jon Klein, the network’s president. “If you think of political coverage, you typically think of Washington-based political reporting. But here’s Lou, in New York, primarily doing stories on the heartland, on the impact of policies on ordinary Americans, and that’s filtering back to Washington.”

“That’s profound,” Klein adds. “It shows you something about the power media can have away from the centers of power. That’s one of Lou’s strengths. He speaks to the people and he also speaks to the influencers.” By design, Dobbs’ show offers little in the way of token rebuttal. He has no use, he says, for “he said, she said” journalism, the kind that has reporters scrambling for an opposing quote five minutes before a story goes to the copydesk. His journalism is a driven, singularly focused, advocacy sort that doesn’t have the time or the patience to toss in a throwaway statement from an opposing think tank.

Needless to say, such fervor is not necessarily shared by his peers. Men like Reese Schonfeld, the former CNN executive who hired Dobbs, call his focus, or overfocus, on illegal immigration a “one-trick pony.” Likewise, Mike Wallace, who likes Dobbs and his program, told me, “He has a fixed and predictable and occasionally excessive preoccupation with broken borders and immigration.”

Fallout from the Grace/Duckett incident…

The New York Observer’s Rebecca Dana writes in a must read about the behind the scenes PR campaign for Nancy Grace after the Melinda Duckett suicide…

Ms. Cordasco sent an e-mail to print reporters in the Florida region, a copy of which was read to The Observer over the phone. In it, she wrote that Ms. Grace “will be going to Leesburg to search for Trenton Duckett with his father Josh …. Josh and the local police have asked Nancy to come down in order to bring the national spotlight back on the case. In addition, the police want to give Nancy special access to their helicopters, etc. Nancy has already made two trips to Florida to investigate the missing-child case and assist in the search efforts on her own.”

“A lot of the media feels like we coordinated our efforts around Nancy Grace and her show coming to Florida,” said Capt. James Pogue of the Marion County Sheriff’s Department. “And honestly, that is not the truth. What happened, it had nothing to do with Nancy Grace coming to town and doing all that. Our objective was to get Trenton Duckett’s face back on national TV so that the world would know who Trenton Duckett was, what he looked like, so they would start looking for him again.”

On Nov. 22, Lauren Ritchie, a columnist for the Orlando Sentinel, pounced on Ms. Cordasco’s talking point. “Just so the truth is known, Leesburg police did not invite Grace to come here, and when questioned about it, the public-relations firm backed away from that claim,” she wrote.

Ms. Ritchie also noted that there were no police helicopters to borrow anyway.

The piece caused an uproar at CNN and Headline News. “There were certainly some people pretty upset over here,” said one high-level network source.

Black Friday boon…story or not?

CJR Daily’s Liz Cox Barrett fisks Neil Cavuto’s Common Sense segment on the media and Black Friday…

Yesterday, Cavuto used this first-person platform to perpetuate a complaint against “The Media” so common that it may have passed unnoticed (and, needless to say, unchallenged) by many in Cavuto’s audience: “The Media” focuses on “bad news.” Fixates on the negative. Ignores the positive. Phrase it how you like.

These days, one is, of course, most likely to encounter this assertion in discussions of how the press covers Iraq. Cavuto, however, cleverly applied it to something seasonal: how the press covered “Black Friday,” the annual day-after-turkey-binge-mall-binge that so many Americans embrace and that, retailers hope, sets the tone for a profitable holiday shopping season.

Apparently, Black Friday 2006 was a generally good day for the malls of America. According to the National Retail Federation, individual shoppers spent an average of 19 percent more over this Thanksgiving weekend than they did one year ago. “[19 percent] is a big number,” observed Cavuto. “And if something’s going up that much, there’s really not much other way to spin it.”

Alas, by Cavuto’s calculation, “The Media” did manage to find another way to “spin it” — by ignoring it. “Apparently to much of the media, it’s not a big deal,” Cavuto concluded, adding that “most who report on this stuff were busier reporting what stinks, not what soars,” and that there was “more talk about how Wal-Mart disappointed. Not much talk about how almost everyone else did not.”

He has his own recommendations, to be derived from people in his administration…If there are some things with which he disagrees, in order to save face, or to show his independence, that he’s still the commander-in-chief, then he will do it.

But I think in general, the recommendations of the committee will be seriously considered by the White House and maybe a lot of them will be adopted.

MSNBC and the Iraq Civil War…

I see that I wasn’t alone. Howard Kurtz got the same feeling I did yesterday about MSNBC and the Iraq Civil War. (via TVNewser)

So Lauer and NBC deserve some credit, I suppose, for dropping the qualifiers, even though the semantic debate is basically a sideshow to the main act of sectarian violence that has been spiraling out of control for many months now. The way that MSNBC pounded the linguistic issue all day, though, seemed to carry a whiff of self-congratulation.

Jim Cramer: CNBC.com magnet?

Marketwatch’s Frank Baranko speculates on an increased presence for Jim Cramer on the new CNBC website…

Is CNBC planning to use Jim Cramer to build traffic and revenue for its new Web site?

Makes sense to me after learning this morning that the Booyah-meister is ending his “Mad Money” radio distribution deal with Westwood One (WON) by the end of the year.

CNBC says its new Web site, to be launched Dec. 4, will offer a “revolutionary financial news experience” including live events and video on demand. One report said the site may include a $10/month option giving access to CNBC’s three channels: US, Asia, and Europe.

Why not some Cramer, too? He’s the Howard Stern of business news. Stern’s signing with Sirius (SIRI) boosted subscriptions. Cramer’s the same kind of act. Outlandish and extreme, with an enthusiastic audience.

CNN’s Phillips to report from Ft. Bragg

CNN announced this afternoon that Kyra Phillips will be reporting from Ft. Bragg on Wednesday. The Overhaulin’ Hummer will be there as well…

CNN anchor Kyra Phillips will report live from Fort Bragg in North Carolina on Wednesday, Nov. 29, as she speaks with soldiers participating in training missions and other military personnel and family members who are receiving medical treatment at Womack Army Medical Center. In conjunction with the network’s visit, CNN’s Warrior One, an Iraq War Hummer refurbished by the crew of TLC’s Overhaulin’ program, will be at multiple locations at the U.S. Army fort, including Womack.

Phillips’ reports will appear throughout the day during CNN Newsroom. She co-anchors the afternoon edition of the program with Don Lemon.
