CNN and Kerry…

CJR Daily’s Liz Cox Barrett rakes CNN over the coals for going hog wild over the John Kerry “bad joke” incident (though I would have liked to have seen comparison analysis of the other channels rather than just single CNN out)…

The sheer volume of coverage devoted this week to Sen. John Kerry’s “botched joke” has been stunning, even to our jaded eyes.

To maintain our sanity, we’ll break off a small chunk of the problem and focus our complaints for now on cable news — specifically, CNN (you know, the network whose mid-term election coverage has included exploring such critical questions as: “What Would Alex P. Keaton Do?”) and, specifically, on CNN’s “surround the story” coverage of BotchedJokeGate Wednesday afternoon and evening.

In sum, CNN couldn’t get enough of it. There were reports on Kerry’s original comments. Reports on assorted responses to Kerry’s comments. Reports on Kerry’s non-responses and responses to those responses. And reports on various responses to Kerry’s non-responses and responses.

  1. Liz Cox Barrett MUST have the “fox blocker” on her tv…because they were talking about Kerry’s “joke” every time I tuned in.

  2. I was about to say Terrance. Don’t watch FNC BUT I’m pretty darn sure they were running it in the ground. Heck, I’m willing to bet a year’s salary on it!

  3. I am glad the networks are talking about this loser.
He has gone home to hide. But you know the old saying - you can run but ………

  4. She’s a little off the liberal message here. Most of the media are saying that we need to get off Kerry and “get back to the topics”. Of course, they forget to mention that they really haven’t been talking about topics lately anyway; instead, they’ve been bombarding us with the Mark Foley and the Rush/Fox stories.

  5. CNN phased out of the story way before they should have; just showing late night talk show jokes on Wednesday. I think they must have felt guilty about the “Broken Government” series at first; but they got over the guilt really quick.

  6. i believe the situation room should be held to a slightly higher standard because it’s the same anchor and team beating the story to death in such an obvious manner. if the varous fnc hacks each attack it their own way during their own hour, well it’s still beaten to death but in different colors. blitzer following blitzer with an interview by blitzer naturally makes things seem lopsided.
