Dan Abrams on the November numbers…

GM Dan Abrams’ memo to MSNBC staffers on the November ratings…

You did it again! Congratulations to everyone on another blockbuster month for the newly energized and surging MSNBC! For the total day we were up a whopping 44% in the key demographic and 25% with total viewers compared with November 05. Competitively, this was our best month since February 02! In prime time, we were up more than any other cable news network: up 70% in the demo, and 47% among total viewers. That earned us our best competitive position in prime time since November 01 and made us the 2nd fastest growing channel on all of cable. And once again, Countdown beat CNN for the month in the key demographic.

We also got off to a great start for the month of December (those ratings began Monday). In prime time on Monday, we beat CNN by 29% in the key demographic. In fact, for 11 hours on Monday we bested CNN and beat Fox for three hours.

Its official, we are on a roll.

Let’s keep it going!

Dan

  1. Let’s see what happens in a few months Dan. Let’s see if those election #’s keep holding up. I know if I was a Lib MSNBC in November was one of the best places to feel ooooooh soooo good lol.

  2. I agree. The network experienced a slight election season bump, is still in a distant third place, and isn’t going anywhere fast. Pat yourself on the back, Dan.

  3. The roll has come to a screeching halt. Already looking at the Tuesday #s, KO is back to #5 in the demo (and total viewers)…

  4. Anonymous, I couldn’t have said it better myself. KO is a clownshow. People come to watch the circus once, but they don’t go back to see the same show twice because it is so predictable.

How do explain the fact the numbers have been fairly consistent all fall?

  6. Wow! MSNBC and KO beat FNC for a whole three hours on Monday night?!?!? First of all, MSNBC plummeted after election night by 70%. You call that doing well? That is pathetic. What are you smoking Dan?

  7. Steve - You are right. KO has been consistent all fall - consistenly in third place every night.

  8. Get over yourself, Dan Abrams!

  9. KO is pathetic. What does he do? Measure how much he beats the competition every 15 minutes? Every 30 minutes?

I can just see the exchange:
KO - Dan, Dan! I ALMOST beat Fox in the first 15 minutes of the show.
DA - Keith, that’s great. Keep up the good work. We are on a roll here. Let’s stay consistent.
KO - I will, boss. I’ll work hard to come in second every night, right behind Fox.

  10. First of all, I LOVE Dan Abrams and really miss his show as HE was the best ever on A Mess NBC! But Dan, are you being delusional or what??? Let’s take your savior - Man Tan Man Mister Olbermann who normally is in THIRD place (tops) with Bill O’s rating quadrupling him. More than not, he hits # 4 but last night he really made it! He was AGAIN in zi cellar!! Elections are over and so will KO’s show be soon and he’s the show that Dan counts on!

    8PM - P2+ (25-54)
    O’Reilly Factor – 2,216,000 viewers (398,000)
    Paula Zahn Now – 788,000 viewers (309,000)
    Countdown w/ Olbermann – 667,000 viewers (238,000)
Deal or No Deal- 1,052,000 viewers (442,000)
    Nancy Grace – 693,000 viewers (253,000)

  11. Paul,
You are right about Dan’s show. I liked it, too!

  12. I agree that MSNBC is still in a distant third place, but they didn’t just experience “a slight election season bump.” MSNBC’s numbers have been up since just before Abrams took over. Countdown itself has been way up recently, and it is pulling the rest of the schedule up with it. And having the other three male evening hosts each anchoring an hour of the daytime live news is a great idea. Was it in their contracts? I had noticed the daytime anchors disappearing one by one, but I had no idea they had this in mind.
