  1. The last four months, Olbermann has really been catching up to O’Reilly, in total viewers and the demo. Here are O’Reilly’s #s, Olbermann’s #s, and what percentage of OR’s ratings Olbermann’s are in the demo:
    Aug 06: OR: 494 Olb: 163 33.0%
    Sep 06: OR: 462 Olb: 183 39.6%
    Oct 06: OR: 454 Olb: 214 47.1%
    Nov 06: OR: 457 Olb: 288 63.0%

  2. Keith,

Please lay off the crackpipe. O’Reilly’s audience is still at least 3 times as big as Olbermann’s in every measurable way. The re-run of O’Reilly is nearly twice as big as Olbermann’s first run.

Look at the list. There are 13 FOX shows and 4 CNN shows with a bigger audience then Olbermann’s and several of those are not even in prime time.

Enough with this Olbermann is almost catching O’Reilly. I don’t think O’Reilly has ever finished in 5th place in that time slot, like Olbermoron did Tuesday night.

  3. bigred: I see just what you mean: 33.0%, 39.6%, 47.1%, 63.0% in consecutive months. That’s no movement at all.

  4. I’ll say it again. O’Reilly still has AT THE VERY LEAST 3 times the audience KO does. Some nights, it’s 5 times. O’Reilly’s re-runs spank KO. His ratings had nowhere to go but up. Now that election season is over, they’ll go back to circling the drain.

  5. Where is Jane Skinner’s show in this mix?

  6. Isn’t she part of FOX News Live?

  7. The “Fox News Live” banner is used on so many hours. A.M., P.M. I didn’t know how they did the stats.

  8. Oh, bigred, say it yet again, won’t you? Cause I really need it. I was looking at the Nov. 06 / Nov. 05 comparisons (at http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/original/nov06vs05.pdf ), and I must have been on the crackpipe again, because when I looked at the changes —

    TOTAL
    O’R: -18%
    Olb: +54%

    DEMO
    O’R: 0%
    Olb: +76% (hello!)

    — it really looked to me like some significant movement. I need you to show me again that it’s nothing. Plus 76% doesn’t mean a thing. Anyone can do that (though O’R is flatlining). Nowhere to go but up, and all of that.

  9. When’s the last time a FNC show had double digit growth?

  10. Keith,

If you are so impressed with KO’s improvement, how do you stand the ecstasy of the fans of CNBC’s “Various”? They must be dancing in the street. (he he)

  11. No, no: I’m not so impressed. Not anymore. bigred has clearly showed me that I had to be on a crackpipe to think that a 76% increase in one year demo & 54% in total viewers is a real improvement. Indeed, I fully trust that I’d be able to see how O’Reilly’s 18% loss in total viewers and 0% change in the demo is far more impressive than is a mere 54%/76% gain, if only I weren’t on this stupid crakpipe. So count me among the unimpressed.

  12. Have any of you noticed the growth of Fb (Fox broadcast) since they started ads on FNC about one year ago, when Mr. Ailes added Fb to his duties.

  13. Are you still there, bigred. B/c I really need you now. I’m working hard to keep the faith in your saying,

Now that election season is over, they’ll [KO’s ratings] go back to circling the drain,

but to my crackpiped mind, it doesn’t look they’re going down at all. In fact, did you see Monday’s demos?:
    O’R: 395,000
    Olb: 310,000

On my calculations — but remember that I’ve been on the crackpipe — that’s over 78%.

That’s still nothing. I really want to believe. Please, bigred, come back and assure us again!

  14. Keith,
Olbermann “catching up” to O’Reilly at this point is akin to saying that someone increasing their bench press by 20 pounds is “catching up” to Mr. Olympia Ron Coleman. Yes, Olbermann has made gains (thanks in no small part by the online efforts of moveon.org & the kossacks) and he’s now vying for 2nd some nights instead of 3rd, save for the times when he doesn’t lose to Deal or No Deal on CNBC, where he promptly comes in 4th or 5th those nights. Then again, going from near nothing to a sold 3rd & sometimes 2nd isn’t really getting all that close to O’Reilly. Again, the bench press is getting “closer” to Mr. Olympia, but there really isn’t much competition.

And that includes hand-picking the numbers that fits one’s needs, as well (hello, Stelter).

  15. Well, look, it certainly looks like Olbermann can never touch O’Reilly in total viewers. O’Reilly quite consistently gets fewer than 1/4 of his viewers in the 25-54 demo. That means 3/4 are coming from outside that group — and you know that in O’Reilly’s case that’s not because of his popularity among the pre-25 kids. And I just can’t see my grandparents going for Olbermann.

But if you’re looking at the 25-54 demo, as most advertisers do, your analogy is way off. Here again are the last 4 months in the demo:
    Aug 06: OR: 494 Olb: 163 33.0%
    Sep 06: OR: 462 Olb: 183 39.6%
    Oct 06: OR: 454 Olb: 214 47.1%
    Nov 06: OR: 457 Olb: 288 63.0%
So, that 63% is already way beyond the analogy you draw — and the trend is alarming, from FNC’s point of view.
So, I think we can all agree, if we’re looking at total viewers, then, while your analogy is an (admittedly harmless) exaggeration, you make a good point. But in the demo, I’d hope you’d agree, you’re WAY off.
