MSNBC’s Matthews hospitalized…

The Washington Post’s Names & Faces’ Korin Miller notes that MSNBC’s Chris Matthews had been hospitalized earlier this week…

Eyebrows arched Tuesday night when Chris Matthews missed his wife’s WJLA farewell party. Kathleen Matthews told partygoers her husband was sick: Turns out the “Hardball” host was in the hospital.

A source close to the talking head told us yesterday that Matthews, 60, fell ill on Monday. He later checked into a local hospital because of complications from diabetes and has been off the air all week.

MSNBC publicist Jill Schwartz yesterday said, “Chris Matthews was hospitalized this week. . . . He’s doing fine.”

UPDATE: FishBowlDC had this story first yesterday

Last night, MSNBC’s Hardball had their kick off event for the 2008 Presidential election at the Castle at the Smithsonian. The only thing missing was the host, Chris Matthews.

MSNBC’s Vice President of Washington, Tammy Haddad, told the crowd that Chris was in the hospital due to complications from diabetes and he was doing fine and would be home Friday.

  1. Patrick Gavin mentioned it yesterday on FishbowlDC…

  2. Which is why I bracketed that with “that I’m know of”…I’ll make a notation..

  3. He was on air Monday for the 2pm hour of MSNBC Live. Not sure if he did Hardball later that day.

  4. Diabetes is nothing to play with. It can lead to all sorts of complications in even the smallest/simplest of illnesses. I had no idea he was diabetic.

  5. Well, hopefully the complication is something he can recover from somewhat easily. Still, who would have though Matthews had diabetes, get well soon!

  6. Even though I don’t see eye to eye with Chris, I hope he recovers. I know first hand that innocuous things associated with diabetes can be a real mess. Godspeed, Chris!

  7. Fell ill, did he? Poor sot. I’ll bet Keith O. is praying for his quick death so that snake can slither right into his vacant spot. They better check em both for that Thallium crap. Chris as the taker and Keith as the giver. That would be a shame. Or should I have said…would that be a shame? Oh yeah…it’s always better to give than to receive. You decide cuz “tis the season”.

  8. Roger, you are definitely an ethically bankrupt person. The problem with someone like you is that because you have no conscience or scrupples, you make the mistake of believing others think like you do.

  9. Exactly Mike. His argument is stupid as well. Olbermann likes the spot he’s in; and if he took Matthews’ spot, he couldn’t do the radio show.

Also, common complications of diabetes for someone Matthews age include gangreen and losing toes or an entire foot due to poor extremity circulation. Nothing to laugh at; and I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.

  10. Roger needs to spend some time with Rev. Ted. He definitely has “issues”.

  11. Please, Roger hit it right on the head. Cable news and scruples. Are you all mad?

  12. Among the wounded is Tim Russert. He fell down some stairs recently(I believe in his home) and has a broken ankle.
He has been doing his show with no mention of it.
I hope he continues to improve.

  13. Tim Russert and Chris Matthews are two of the best. I wish only the best for them. Keith O. doesn’t deserve some of the mean spirited remarks about him. He is far better than Bill O. on FOX.

  14. roger is actually right. mathews is a nasty spirited blowhard know-it-all. his bad karma has come to hin. we all need to be more tolerant.

  15. I’m a longtime fan of Hardball. Although, I agree that Chris has needed a humility check lately. In any event, I hope he recovers and gets back on the air.
