Wednesday’s Numbers…
In what has become the most competitive and turbulent hour of the evening from a ratings race perspecitve, Deal or No Deal had 1,000,000 viewers at 8 pm. But that big number wasn’t enough to leapfrog CNBC over MSNBC in primetime’s Total Viewer count for the night. O’Reilly had over 2,000,000 viewers. Paula Zahn Now finished last in both the P2+ and 25-54 demographics.
Note: At 10:10 pm FNC went dark on Time Warner Cable in New York City for an hour and fifteen minutes. I’ve included quarter hour breakdown for FNC during that period which suggests the blackout impacted On The Record’s ratings for the hour…

So Olbermann and MSNBC have finished fourth two nights in a row. How long before another special comment appears?
Comment by Alison — December 7, 2006 @ 9:36 pm
I love it. AM is tied for 3rd in the demo AGAIN (with Robin and Co.), and PZN is a huge dent in CNN’s ratings (AGAIN) and FOURTH in the primetime demo…everyone with me…AGAIN. Is everyone at CNN snoozing or what? Do something about this you morons…

Who wants to place bets that by this time next week another fawning media piece about how great Olbermann’s ratings are will magically appear?
Comment by Big Red — December 7, 2006 @ 10:31 pm
I don’t get it, how bad has Zhan got? Is her contract up soon and is she just playing out the string?
Olby is at least a little fun these days. How close to a meltdown can you get at this point? Tell me that guy isn’t really comming unglued! If Deal and CNBC were Fox products, Olby would be railing on them big time!
Big Red, Who’s Olby gona get at this point to do a fluff piece, The South Bend High School Newspaper? He’s just about run the gammit on this one!
How about Larry King? He has the Surrender Group on and can’t even break a million.
Comment by puck — December 7, 2006 @ 11:05 pm
Look at Beck….he beat Olby on the 25-54’s wow!
Comment by Dugun — December 7, 2006 @ 11:47 pm
My bet is a “Special Comment”, which will be heavily coordinated with the blue blogs, will appear on Monday night, usually Olby’s best night. He’ll then use that to puff himself up.
I bet either Beck or Howie Mandell will get a WPITW, or at least KO will take a jab at Howie’s germ obsession.

Anonymous appears very upset; slow deep breaths; it’s going to be okay; really…
I’ve come to one conclusion from tonight’s #s: CNBC has absolutely NO effect on the other four news networks. I wonder why you even list them.
Comment by erljr — December 8, 2006 @ 1:33 am
Based upon the comments, I thought I must have misread the ratings, but no…Olbermann had 700,000 viewers AND beat every program at CNN in the demo except for Cooper. I doubt Griffin and Abrams are unhappy today.
Comment by museglet — December 8, 2006 @ 4:50 am
CNN might as well show CNNI during AM & PZ’s slots. Could the numbers possibly go any lower?
Comment by Terance — December 8, 2006 @ 7:57 am
8: but he still finished 4th in THE DEMO that Olbyloons promote only when it looks good for KO. Look, if KO has a good night, so be it. But when he finishes 4th in THE DEMO, then he has to be called out on it.
Comment by eddiebear — December 8, 2006 @ 11:41 am
Meltdown with Odormoronn moved out of his routine spot in last place and into FOURTH place out FIVE? Odormoronn continues to be destroyed by something called Deal or No Deal, so things can’t be going well at MSDNC headquarters.
Comment by Tom — December 8, 2006 @ 11:43 am
Eddiebear and Tom no doubt think their name-calling (Odormoronn etc) makes them look witty? I outgrew that level of ‘wit’ in junior high.

All of the spin here is making me dizzy:
#8-museglet- I agree that Griffin and Abrams are unlikely to be upset by Countdown’s #s, but you say it beat everyone at CNN except AC360’s 1st hour in the demo. HLN, which is at the same time part of CNN and not part of CNN depending on the #s and the spin being aimed for, beat Countdown in the demo with BOTH of it’s main primetime shows.
#1,#4,#10,#11- Like I said earlier, CNBC is NOT competition for the other four. I would add this: it is used here for one thing- to help everyone back up their own spin. If the #s are low, they are used to pump something up; if the #s are high, they are used to make something look worse. And CNBC’s #s are for a different demographic entirely; that’s how they can survive with such low average #s.
Now Terance(#9) has a great idea. They could also put on CNN Live news, or reruns, or simulcast Headline news. They could try it out when someone goes on vacation, like MSNBC has done in the past couple years with “The Situation” and “The Most.”

Erljr, great point about CNBC. And to be more specific, Deal or no Deal is not in any way a news show. Just like i’m not comparing NBC’s Heroes to O’reilly. But, just for fun, a recent episode brought in “15.5 million viewers and 6.7 rating/16 share in 18-49 year-olds, according to Nielsen.” So, this means more people (including myself) would rather watch this show than all the news channels combined.
Comment by Terance — December 8, 2006 @ 2:36 pm
True Terance. And news channels thrive and prosper because certain advertisers seek their particular audience. For instance, Bill O’Reilly said last night that 82% of Americans don’t know who Nouri Al-Maliki is. “Heroes” is a great show that attracts a general audience; but it doesn’t normally take much away from the news channel audience, and probably has even less of an effect on the CNBC audience. An exception to the rule: last season’s “American Idol” finale.
