  1. 6,7,9 and 10…CNN tops FNC in the demos again. Interesting…

  2. Wow. Shocking. FNC tops everyone in overall viewers. Again. And again. And again.

    Comment by Big Red — December 14, 2006 @ 7:57 pm

  3. Yes, FNC does top everyone in total viewers and doubt that will change any time soon but this business of CNN beating in the all important demos is quite interesting and I’m sure quite pleasing to the folks at CNN

    Comment by Anon — December 14, 2006 @ 8:21 pm

  4. I love how defensive the FNC fans get.

    Comment by Arthur — December 14, 2006 @ 8:22 pm

  5. There’s no news right now. Look at the stories being covered; they aren’t big headlines. Page 10 has become page 1 until some news happens.

    Comment by erljr — December 14, 2006 @ 8:28 pm

  6. I love how absorbed OlbyLoons and other lefties are with the “demo.” The fact is people above the demo age spend more than those in the demo.

    Comment by Edward Schatz — December 14, 2006 @ 8:28 pm

  7. Even though AC360’s numbers haven’t been all that high lately I noticed that Greta isn’t beating him by as much as she once did. At one time her numbers were double and at times triple those of NewsNight and then AC360.

    Comment by Anon — December 14, 2006 @ 8:38 pm

  8. It’s amusing to me to see Olbermann and his fans try to claim that being beaten by some 1,419,000 viewers overall and by 147,000 viewers in the demo is in fact a ratings “victory”.

Re Greta: There are no missing, white, teenage girls from affluent families or white, pregnant women from aflluent families for her to report on, hence her lower ratings.

    Comment by Alison — December 14, 2006 @ 8:45 pm

  9. How much longer is FNC going to wait until they replace Greta with Megyn Kendall?

    Comment by Terance — December 14, 2006 @ 8:55 pm

  10. I tried watching FNC last night starting with Greta. She spent most of the first half of the show on a non - story about missing students and whether or not there is a serial murderer involved. Our country is at a crossroads in a controversial war with a president in apparent denial, and this is what Fox wants to call ‘news’. I disagree strongly with erljr that “there is no news right now”.

    Comment by Mike — December 14, 2006 @ 9:22 pm

  11. For god’s sake, if CNN becomes #1, it isn’t the end of the world BigRed, Anon, and any other FNC nuts, just shows they might retool their programming.

Anyway, CNN’s programming is definately strong and will probably get some good ratings into the future.

    Comment by Chris — December 14, 2006 @ 9:40 pm

  12. Chris, when CNN comes anywhere close to being #1 overall.. or how about #1 in just one time slot, let me know. I won’t be holding my breath.

As for Greta’s show, it’s not a news show. It’s not designed to talk about Iraq, etc. It’s mostly legal affairs stuff. I don’t care for it, but plenty of people do.

    Comment by Big Red — December 14, 2006 @ 9:59 pm

  13. Just for the record Chris I’m NOT a FNC fan at all never mind a FNC nut. And Alison maybe I’ve missed it but so far haven’t seen a post on this thread from Olbermann’s fans boasting about demos.Think the main point is CNN beat FNC in demos..Olbermann is on MSNBC.

  14. “There’s no news right now. Look at the stories being covered; they aren’t big headlines. Page 10 has become page 1 until some news happens.”

Good lord, the Senate possibly changing hands AGAIN, and the WH in complete denial with respect to facts on the ground in Iraq and the SAUDIS whistling Cheney to heel and giving him his marching orders direct from Mecca, and the world’s tallest man saving the lives of two dolphins and you say there’s no NEWS??

    Comment by Arthur — December 14, 2006 @ 10:25 pm

  15. Arthur, we’ve been in Iraq for a few years now. People know the situation. The Senate story is interesting to people who follow politics, but not very fascinating to the average American. It is a slow news cycle.

    Comment by Big Red — December 14, 2006 @ 11:18 pm

  16. BigRed, you have to be kidding! Iraq is always relevant, no matter how it’s going at whatever time, more than any pointless “oh no, lost random girl, let’s fill an hour with it” story!

    Comment by Chris — December 14, 2006 @ 11:59 pm

  17. Slow news cycle? Maybe not news you personally find interesting Big Red but that doesn’t make it a slow news cycle. And what does slow news cycle have to do with CNN beating FNC in demos.Only slow news cycle for FNC???

    Comment by Anon — December 15, 2006 @ 12:15 am

  18. WOW…look how unimportant the demo becomes when fnc is on the low end of the pole. AND is there ever any ‘news’ on fnc during primetime?!?

    Comment by Big Dave — December 15, 2006 @ 12:47 am

  19. “People know the situation.”

Big Red, you know the situation. I know the situation. Over 70% of the US population knows the situation. The one man who has the authority to DO something about the situation sees us steaming full speed towards a glorious victory.

    Comment by Arthur — December 15, 2006 @ 1:25 am

  20. In the absence of a cute missing white woman or the rare trial that spellbinds the nation, legal-affairs shows don’t attract a broad audience. Greta is good in her niche, and deserves praise for her willingness to get several sides of legal issues, but I don’t think the discussions have much resonance with non-lawyers.

I think the Megyn Kendall suggestion above is a definite possibility. She or Kimberly Guillfoyle could host a “Lineup”-style show that includes some legal matters, but also the celebrity stuff that has boosted Olbermann’s and Scarborough’s ratings.

They could also go for an FNC-style debate show with Kendall or Guillfoyle taking the center-right position and someone like Mark Levin taking the far-right position. Hannity loves Levin and has had him on H&C a few times lately.

  22. Arthur and others,

What I meant by no news is this:
1)Natalie Halloway is being covered 24/7. That could be the reason Greta’s #s are low.
2)Mountain climbers stranded is on 24/7.
3)only good news coming out of Iraq this month; casualties about half of last month’s near records. No bad news from Iraq, no MSM coverage.
4)You are kidding about the world’s tallest man saving the lives of two dolphins, aren’t you?
5)who doesn’t know about the Senator with a stroke? No new news about it, but everyone has two 5-10 minute segments, analyzing the ramifications, per hour.

There are minimal developments on these stories, so we hear the same thing we’ve been hearing every day since the story happened. When today’s newscast is the same as yesterday’s, people turn it off or change the channel.

Thanks for the support Big Red.

And Big Dave, you make a good point. O’Reilly has managed to keep his totals (2 million or more when he hosts) and demos (400-500,000s) up by getting stories that should be shown to a national audience. Kudos to O’Reilly.

And all you Lou Dobbs fans: it has become a trend for Dobbs to top or at least move in on Brit Hume when Congress goes out of session. Expect plenty of analysis here and around the other news blogs (if the news cycle stays slow) until the State of the Union next month, when Hume will be back firmly in the lead.

  23. “You are kidding about the world’s tallest man saving the lives of two dolphins, aren’t you?”

Um. Yes. That said, everyone covered it.

    Comment by Arthur — December 15, 2006 @ 12:39 pm

  24. Greta’s basic philosophy: O’Reilly and H&C just spent 2 hours on politics so I’ll give my viewers something different. Yet when there has been blockbuster news such as terrorist bombinsg and Katrina, Greta is always on top of the story.

For the past 3 + years, Greta Van Susteren has dominated in her timeslot. Now she loses an occasional night to Cooper and all of the critcs above chide her about “missing white females.”

And sometimes the coverage of crime stories yields great results: last night she broke the story that the accuser in the Duke/lacrosse case was pregnant and gave birth, exactly 9 months after the rape!

    Comment by Ira — December 15, 2006 @ 1:05 pm

  25. Some people like the type of programs Greta does and that’s understandable. It’s not the kind of program I like but I do realize that everyone has different tastes in what kind of programs they like. I don’t find her breaking news all that shocking. For one thing the report says roughly nine months after not exactly and it was already reported that the DNA testing showed she had genetic material from several men in her body and underwear and none being from any member of the Lacrosse team.

    Comment by Anon — December 15, 2006 @ 1:48 pm

  26. The one story that truly affects all of us is the war and how it is being handled. The rest is just distraction which I guess we need sometimes to just keep our sanity.

    Comment by ladyone — December 15, 2006 @ 2:37 pm

  27. I think I’d agree with the last topic, but I guess I am just not a fan of distractions. I want news when I go to a news channel, not time filler to make their money. What ever happened to importance trumping ratings? Guess I was dreaming……

    Comment by Chris — December 15, 2006 @ 7:59 pm

  28. Gavin Newsom is an idiot to cheat on Kimberly Guillfoyle.
