Jim Walton Interview…

The Atlanta Journal Constitution’s Scott Leith has an interview with CNN’s Jim Walton…(via TVNewser)

Q: We know about the ratings race, which Fox leads. From a business standpoint, compare CNN to Fox and MSNBC and others.

A: CNN is a global company. Specifically, with CNN/U.S., you need to take into account how ratings are calculated, and ratings are the amount of people who watch and the amount of time they spend viewing. CNN/U.S. actually has more viewers than Fox, but the Fox viewer spends more time watching, and that calculation creates a higher rating.

Q: With CNN/U.S., how much time do you spend on the details, or do you leave that to your deputy, Jon Klein?

A: My job is to set the strategy. Jon has a lot of autonomy. My involvement is when there is going to be a decision that is somehow going to impact the brand or be long-lasting, i.e. programming changes.
