Let's call Fox News what it is; entertainment. The McDonald's 100 billion burger comment nailed it on the head. Just because it's highly rated doesn't mean it's quality. Hell, Britney Spears sells records and she can't sing!

I will just stick with my favorite pundit - Steven Colbert.

Just remember - O'Reilly isn't anti-gay marriage AND he's pro gun control -- or did you not watch your 60 Minutes profile of him?

"The Crooked Wang" - Actually, I haven't made it into the key demo yet... still have a few weeks... so I suppose I could take this as a threat. Or you could count me, my brother, and about half the people I work with who are all under 40 as some of O'Reilly's fans.

Dave - If you take solice in thinking that FNC doesn't do news, and therefor you don't have to consider them part of the ratings structure... that's fine. Forgive me though if I don't recognize "Big Dave's Ratings" and go for one of those "mainstream" and "publically recognized" organizations.

And Fact - While YOU don't think FNC has cred... most of us aren't really worried about impressing you. You've already made up your mind... which is now in a perpetual state of "locked." But that's fine... I'm sure you know "all about the industry"... and are responsible for the distribution of many "flyer[s] on a windshield of a car in a parking lot." But, and you can call me crazy, I'll take my chances figuring out what has and doesn't have credibility elsewhere.

With the gap still as large as it is... I hardly think even a downward trend in the numbers at the point is of much concern. If the other networks were getting anywhere near FNC's numbers, we'd have something to talk about... but the gap isn't even close.

After checking the two studies I was originally thinking of didn't deal with bias afterall. But thought I read a study somewhere??

Glad you agree with me about perceived bias now I'm going to push it a bit further. If I admit my negative opinion of FNC may be a bit influenced by my bias- will you admit you're favorable opinion may be a bit influenced by your bias? :)

I think the thing that is so encouraging to MSNBC and CNN is the downward trend of all of FOX's numbers. FOX may still be number one but over time they are on a downward trend. That should be the concern.

Haven't heard of the PEW study... but did hear about the other study which said the NBC and MSNBC were the most friendly (out of all the networks) towards Kerry in the '04 campaign; while the FNC was the most friendly (out of all the networks) to the Bush campaign.

But I do agree with you about perceived bias for the same programming. Projection and denial can be a powerful thing.

I don't think we're ever all going to agree on who is more biased. We all have our own biases and we bring them along with us when we watch the news. It's only natural not to notice bias when it happens to go along with our own bias.I'm positive you could sit a liberal and a conservative down in the same room watching the same program and they would both see the whole bias situation on the program totally different. However isn't there some studies out there by Pew and other study groups that have found FNC the most biased?

Many of us do not watch Fox 100% of the time, but come here to defend them against certain attacks.

They may not always be correct in their presentation of the news, but they seem to strive to present a balance. CNN does also, to a lesser extent, but MSNBC seems to have largely abandoned such a philsophy.

Rodrigo~

Who is talking about the "world"? Not this article. It has nothing to do with Fox's standing in the world, but in the US market.

elmonica~

You couldn't be more wrong and I find your characterization insulting. Those who watch FNC, myself included, I am sure would never characterize a country in which our men and women are sacraficing their lives at an alarming rate a paradise. Fox watchers are not the mindless drones your make us out to be.

However you are right on only one point and that is that Fox News should be congratulated for having the ratings that they do. I am sure MSNBC and CNN would love to be in their position.

Repeat after me... In this World first is CNN, then BBC, next Sky, Next Al Jazeera... Fox News is a small channel.

Fox News should be congratulated. They have created a product that largely appeals to the same demographic that thinks George Bush is doing a great job and that Iraq is a paradise. This fiercely loyal minority has found a voice that speaks for them on a daily basis and they have rewarded the network with outstanding ratings.

What's wrong with that?

Look, just because McDonalds have sold 100 billion hamburgers, doesn't mean its good food.

I know the ratings are the measuring stick....but having the most numbers still doesn't mean you have the best news product.

I just don't understand why people inssit on getting their news from a single source...one they agree with. I try to watch FNC, CNN, MSNBC, C-Span, PBS, the major networks....and sample Rush, Hannity, Air America, NPR, BBC etc on radio....oh, and some newspapers right and left.

Its like that guy who ate at McDonalds everyday for a month....watch only FNC and you'll get fat on Bush-spinning news. It is what it is.

Fox really likes to use the ratings "whopping" stick, don't they? Fox is indeed a huge ratings draw just like crap being a huge draw to flies. Ratings is not a measure of quality, and that is why you do not see Fox trotting that little word out.

Key demos or overall viewers, FNC has a strangle hold on the ratings that the other networks can barely touch. It is interesting that despite spending $20 million to promote Anderson, good ol' Larry is still their number one draw. Neither Anderson nor CNN's marketing department can be too happy with those results.

"I'm Not Blue", you bring up excellent points to refute everything we have to put up with from the Fox haters.

And Chris, thank you for posting those "demo" numbers. Even the Fox haters will have to admit that Fox still ranks basically the same, whether demo or total numbers are used for the rankings.

I'm still amazed that when FOX goes after people who attack them... they're "a middle school bully taunting a nerd." But when MSNBC does a story about FNC and bashes FNC at every opportunity, they're courageous!

When FNC does an ad that highlights their success, they should "spend time reporting news." But when MSNBC produces commercials that highlight percentage ratings gains, they're funny and sticking it to the competition... in a good way.

And when the ratings show that FNC is doing better than the rest... they either don't mean anything, don't hit the right demo, or just show that there are a lot of stupid people. But when CNN or MSNBC posts gains, it shows that the people know what's going on, show that FNC is scared, and prove they're the way of the future.

It must be hard to be a FOX hater... always having to come up with new reasons and ways to hate things you disagree with. Ignoring the facts, producing BLATANT hypocrisy, and cheerleading only the details you want to believe, every time new information comes out must be exhausting.

You guys are so butt blind. The facts stare you straight in the face and you still dispute them. FOX has 14 of the top 15 shows OVERALL. They have 11 of the top 15 in your key demo. What more do you want? Maybe you should do a fact check.

I think at least CNN can take pride they dont have a program on the air like BO. It's too sad the number cable 'news' program in BO. News? Far from it.

While I know it was produced in jest, I actually think it highlights the fact that Larry is still the number one draw card for CNN.

Greta, Sean, Allan and Bill have all put their hands up as Larry supporters - Whether they really meant it or not, I don't know, but I think Larry is the most balanced host on CNN.

On another point, CNN and MSNBC must be so embarrassed that the O'Reilly repeat beats anything they have.

Doesn't Fox have something better to do then spend money acting like a middle school bully taunting a nerd? I would propose that Fox should spend time reporting news, but that would be conceding they are a news organization.

Great points Terance, thought this makes me wonder, why don't we ever see yearly charts of the top 25-54 demo numbers? If it's so important day to day, isn't it important enough for full year numbers?

Terance - this is the ALL OVER DEMO... as in everyone... not just the old folks, not just the young folks... everyone.

And who cares? But since you do... here's the link to the year re-cap http://insidecable.blogsome.com/2007/01/03/2006-numbers-program-ranker/#more-4392

And while because I'm not going to waste my time putting it in a chart... looks to me like CNN would gain 2 shows with "CNN Presents" and "Anderson Cooper 360"... and CNBC would gain one with "Deal or No Deal." So out of 15 top shows... FNC would have 11... and the 4 other networks (MSNBC, CNN, HLN, & CNBC) would have 4.

Either way you look at it... FNC is still dominating.

I have read dozens of articles from fools writing in American newspapers hailing the "ratings" of Keith Olbermann. However, according to the list of the top 15 cable news programs, Olbermann's ratings are not only abysmal, but his gameshow is not considered an actual news program.

Big Red, how about a little fact check? FNC is hyping 14/15 in the nursing home demo. We always hear how important the key demo is to advertisers. Perhaps you'd like to provide the top 15 key demo list? Also, save that political talk for someone who is a registered democrat or republican.
