Thursday’s Numbers…

CNN won the Anna Nicole Demo last night. The O’Reilly Factor was the highest rated program last night with Larry King coming in 2nd with a huge number, double his regular audience size. King though had the biggest Demo number last night.

MSNBC got beat by HLN in both P2+ and P25-54 in Primetime. But the strength for HLN came from the bench with Showbiz Tonight having a really large number. In fact Showbiz built on the Nancy Grace repeat’s numbers…

  1. I’m a bit surprised (though I know I shouldn’t be) at how Anna’s death gave CNN & HLN (and to a lesser extent, MSNBC) such a huge bump last night…when is the last time Paula Zahn got over 1.2 million viewers?!?

  2. I find it depressing that the numbers were so high last night. Guess the viewing public likes this kind of stuff.Just means the cable networks will keep dishing out this kind of overdone coverage on these kinds of stories. After all the viewers have rewarded them by tuning in.

  3. I know, myview. Last night while I sat thru hours of tabloid fluff waiting for some news, I was even further depressed at the thought that they were probably drawing enormous ratings.

    Comment by Arthur — February 9, 2007 @ 6:55 pm

  4. Larry King’s numbers are huge. It’s tabloid fluff, but people want to see it.

    Comment by Goldfish — February 9, 2007 @ 8:15 pm

  5. Those were my thoughts exactly when I saw the numbers….Stories like this will continue to dominate and explode because viewers tune in when it happens…

    Sigh…

  6. This surprises me, as I didn’t see this as such a big story….I suppose I’m in the minority.
Sadly, this will drag on because the coroner’s report won’t be finished for a few weeks and then there is the question of who is the father of Mrs. Smith’s newborn.

  7. After paternity is determined, then the court battle over the inheritance begins. It’s an unfortunate circus freak show. I feel sorry for her child.

    Comment by Goldfish — February 9, 2007 @ 8:55 pm

  8. FishOil and Goldfish, did you see that the paternity tests are back from Howard K. Stern and Larry Birkhart(sp?), and NEITHER are the father? Now Zsa Zsa Gabor’s very elderly husband has offered that even HE may be the father. can you believe this?

  9. Cnn should write a cheque to Anna Nicole’s child or someone in her family, as those numbers are HUGE- at least compared to what the normal viewership is, infact everyone benefited from The anna Nicole, with Larry, anderson and Paula seemingly benefiting the most. I guess i can understand why everyone is fascinated, afterall this woman’s story is like a movie, however never did i thought the hysteria would be this much, i know much bigger more celebs whose death didn’t get half this amount of coverage. It shows you the power of notoriety.
Y’all know that were going to have to bare a few more weeks of the excessive coverage, especially from nancy and Greta.

  10. I wasn’t surprised about Larry King’s #s, but I was surprised about MSNBC’s. On Wednesday, MSNBC beat CNN in the demo. Then Thursday, MSNBC’s #s were only competing with HLN. And MSNBC really tried to own this story! They had more coverage than anyone else, and they had more LIVE coverage than anyone else preempting both Tucker hours, the first hour of Hardball, and the doc block.
Oh, well. MSNBC gets an A for effort from me.

  11. Spud–you need to get ahold of video of Olbermann’s show from tonight. He went off on Anderson Cooper, said he wasn’t a journalist but a marketing phenomenon. Did Anderson Cooper pee in Olbermann’s wheaties or what? What exactly has Cooper done to Olbermann?

    Comment by Alison — February 9, 2007 @ 11:57 pm

  12. Meltdown with Olbermann remains in FOURTH place out of FIVE? Had MSLSD not pleaded with CNBC to move the rerun of Deal or No Deal out of Olbermann’s time slot, Olbermann would have been back in his routine FIFTH place out of FIVE. Any comments from Dan Abrams?

    Comment by Tom — February 10, 2007 @ 12:25 am

  13. Yes Alison, KO surprised me with that one tonight. Of course KO had some especially choice words for BOR as usual which I wish I could share with the readers but can’t.

Something tells me Cooper won’t be taking the bait. Not his style.

Are you using several different names on this blog?

Are you one of KO’s “email confidants” we hear about or one of his producers?

Heh. If you recall, Alison, KO was originally ASKING for 4M when his contract was up for renewal. Judging by his remarks about Anderson, who DID get a 4M contract, I would not hesitate to suggest he did NOT get anywhere near that amount.

You know, I usually stand up for KO on this forum, but not this time. The former sportscaster who never leaves his desk doesn’t have a lot of leeway to be questioning ANYONE’s journalism creds, but particularly those of the guy who’s the first one in the war zone and the last one to leave the scene of the disaster.

    Comment by Arthur — February 10, 2007 @ 1:22 am

  17. Wow Arthur. Nice of you to join reality. JK. I don’t think Olbermann has signed his contract yet. But I think you’re right, that they’re not going to offer him any near 4 mil. Nor should they.

This is just typical KO..attack the competition. Just add Cooper to the list.. O’Reilly, 24, American Idol… I guess he is branching out a little, since it’s usually just FOX he goes after.

    Comment by bigred — February 10, 2007 @ 1:30 am

  18. Does this mean KO agrees with FOX’s assesments of Cooper? Aw, crap… a pig just flew into my window. Friggin ’swine’

  19. In the past Abrams has bragged about how popular KO is on YOUTUBE. I looked at all of his video’s on that site, low and behold the only one’s that really get any big hit numbers are about BO. Also, his Bush bashing is old news. He is putting out bait for more prey. He is like a mouse in a maze, he knows where the food is.

    Comment by Aunt Mary — February 10, 2007 @ 3:33 am

  20. BigRed et al - I suspect a lot of other anchors (or, excuse me, Spud - hosts) have their noses a little out of joint right now. The March issue of Men’s Journal has Cooper on the cover; subhead “America’s Toughest Reporter”. That’s gotta hurt. Well, that on top of the four million dollars…

    Comment by Arthur — February 10, 2007 @ 4:01 am

  21. I think Keith Olbermann could find a MUCH better target for his rancor than Anderson Cooper. It sounds like sour grapes. As others have already said, when Keith gets his butt off the anchor chair and out in the field like AC does, maybe he’ll pull in the big bucks, but I doubt it.

    Comment by Marty — February 10, 2007 @ 4:30 am

  22. I was stunned when KO made those extremely negative comments about AC. His sour grape vine must be branching out. I agree with other posters - KO has no business insulting AC. KO rarely leaves the studio. The few times that he has done remote broadcasts were for cushy assignments - media appearances, spring training and presidential events.

    Comment by Goldfish — February 10, 2007 @ 10:12 am

  23. To me that was the big news from Olbermann’s show last night, his bashing of Anderson Cooper. I always thought that his obsession with bashing O’Reilly was nothing but a clever ratings ploy on his part to gain attention. But his bashing of Anderson Cooper was totally over the line and beyond excusable (although I’m betting some of his fans will show up to defend him here—how I have no idea). Olbermann clearly has anger, jealously and hate issues that he needs to resolve. He needs to spend less time bashing others and more time concentrating on making his own pathetically-low rated program a success. Then he might get the attention that O’Reilly & Cooper generate. Anyway, for some reason, I don’t see this AC bashing being covered on any of the media blogs and I just don’t think it’s big news at this point that he bashes O’Reilly, but his bashing of Cooper to me was indicitive of someone with some real problems and a nasty habit of insulting any and everyone around him that he either doesn’t like or perceives as some sort of threat.

    Comment by Alison — February 10, 2007 @ 11:05 am

  24. Didn’t KO recently defend AC from Fox’s criticism, about being the “Paris Hilton” of cable news (paraphrasing here)? His remarks last night were a dramatic turnaround. Does KO support Fox News now? LOL.

    Comment by Goldfish — February 10, 2007 @ 11:11 am

  25. Ohh, my MSNBC has been gone for the longest while now, so haven’t been able to see any CD or anything else on MSNBC for that matter. I really wish i could see/ hear the comments and the context in which they were made. Anderson is a nice guy and reporter and i dont see why anyone should have a problem with him. several things come to mind- it could be sour grapes s some of you suggest (but i doubt that), i’ve watched AC360 and i’ve seen Anderson take a couple of shots at MSNBC before, i even remembered him saying something backhanded about Keith as it relates to the whole Playgirl sexiest newsman thing- But those incident were so trivial and so long ago that i dont think thats Keith’s Bone of contention. probably its just a case of keith, like the folks at FNC,simply believing that AC is overhyped and is more of a celebrity than a journalist- that view is not correct in my opinion but i know some people feel that way.

    Goldfish - I know! Bipolar??

    Comment by Arthur — February 10, 2007 @ 1:33 pm

  27. KO don’t go there and please get off the haterade while
you still have time to free yourself from that serious
jealousy disease. Naming AC to your worst person list
because you can’t compete , dude get a life.

I think it is because KO is not even in AC’s league and
he knows it. Let’s see: Cooper has already been an international correspondent for ABC and anchored World
News Now as well(all done in his 20’s and 30’s). Oh yeah
not yet four-0, AC is already the leading man at CNN, anchoring breaking news and the big events(that means he
is blowing up worldwide). And then there is 60 minutes,best-selling author, appearing on the cover of mags and boosting
    sells,emmy award winning journalist(for news).KO where
your emmys at for Countdown ? Now the anchor spot waiting
for him at ABC CBS or NBC(in his early 40’s). KO has to
act the fool for publicity and get buzz in the blogs, hoping
to get picked up by MSM.

Guess what ,360 is Anderson Cooper’s show and he can do
whatever he wants and KO and the MSNBC hate machine can’t
do a thing about it. By the way those of us who are fans
of 360 say thanks for the free publicity you only helped
Anderson sell more copies of Men’s Journal and get google
hits. Keith we think you are crazy as Gnarls Barkley would
say.FNC tried the same thing and Greta is butt of a lot of
jokes.Current Tv’s take on the FNC ad is halarious.Although
Greta won’t like the punchline.Somehow I think Anderson
Cooper does not care what KO thinks. The 360 blog is pretty popular and it generates a lot of talk about the stories
that Anderson and company cover for CNN.I have one question
for KO, how much of 360 does he actually see ? I would be
willing to bet AC 360 has way more news than Countdown.
