Chetry on the way out at FNC?

TVNewser scoops with word that Kiran Chetry’s contract negotiations are going badly and she may be out the door at FNC.

Was there another party that FNC was in competition with? If you read this letter between the lines it says to me that either someone made an offer and FNC balked at matching it or Chetry’s agent sent out feelers to other networks. That scenario rang an old bell for me. I speculated that something similar happened when Rita Cosby jumped from FNC to MSNBC, though there was never any proof that that was the case.

  1. Not a fan of Kiran so they can let her go but if she’s smart she’ll stick around or become a nobody on another network. Whatever happened to Miss Shock & Awe when she left FNC?

    Comment by Lurker — February 15, 2007 @ 7:15 pm

  2. No fan here either! Won’t bother me a bit if she goes!

    Comment by Caty — February 15, 2007 @ 7:19 pm

  3. I don’t think Chetry is very smart… no great loss to FNC…

    Comment by Paul Tomlinson — February 15, 2007 @ 7:20 pm

  4. Talk about a JUICY PDF! WHEW! Honestly I didn’t think FNC was even going to renew her contract…But, it looks like things got awfully dicey! Anyone want to translate/speculate on what this line most likely refers to? “In addition, you and your client’s unprofessional demand that we include a clause in her new agreement which would have been detrimental to other Fox News talent, is simply not the way we conduct business.”

    Comment by Terance — February 15, 2007 @ 7:21 pm

  5. If CNN and MSNBC are trying to lure her, what they should have learned by now with Paula Zahn and Rita is that Fox viewers won’t follow talent to other networks. It is a loyalty and message issue.

You have to give my husband an anchor postion =)

So who gave TVNewser the letter? Agent or FNC?

    Comment by Lurker — February 15, 2007 @ 7:24 pm

  7. Oh wow, For once elmonique makes sense.

    Comment by Lurker — February 15, 2007 @ 7:28 pm

  8. Man, this is kind of depressing, she’s one of my favorites on the network, probably to be replaced with some joke of a host for F&F Weekends.

    Comment by Chris — February 15, 2007 @ 7:28 pm

  9. ^

Kiran out and Janice Dean moving into the FNF weekend spot is fine by me.

    Comment by Lurker — February 15, 2007 @ 7:33 pm

  10. Having seen her on “Fox and Friends First,” I always thought it was obvious she was less substance and more eye candy (mini-skirts in the dead of winter?).

That letter is rather interesting…seems that she may have become a bit of a prima donna. At the risk of sounding harsh, she should realize that there are probably many young, attractive female “journalists” lined up to take her place.

    Comment by FishOil — February 15, 2007 @ 7:33 pm

  11. I used to watch PZ’s ‘The Edge’ on FNC and her show was good…(from what I remember) She would interview people and get “rough” like BO does. Then PZ goes to CNN and they completely switch her “format” and she tanks…

    Comment by Terance — February 15, 2007 @ 7:33 pm

  12. Fish, she sure likes to showoff those legs. The laptop screen is always pushed all the way back when she’s around even during Ford’s funeral. =)

    Comment by Lurker — February 15, 2007 @ 7:35 pm

  13. yeah everyone was right. Rita’s a big hit at msbc.Chetry stay away from msnbc!!

    Comment by phil — February 15, 2007 @ 7:36 pm

  14. Cant imagine what its like in her and Chris’s home tonight. How awkward for him when he goes to work tomorrow…

    Comment by Wenchie — February 15, 2007 @ 7:48 pm

  15. Honestly, I am kind of interested that if it does become official and she has left FNC, will she end up over on CNN, MSNBC, or just fall off the map?

    Comment by Chris — February 15, 2007 @ 7:55 pm

  16. I’ve always liked her (and her husband, Chris Knowles) and thought she always made many contributions to the discourse. And she seemed to get along with other on-air talent.

It really sounds like the agent went overboard. I wish she’d fire him and resume her career at Fox.

    Comment by Missy — February 15, 2007 @ 7:58 pm

  17. Wasn’t she parachuted into her position in the first place as some sort of darling? Oh haven’t the tables turned!

    Comment by Paul Tomlinson — February 15, 2007 @ 8:02 pm

  18. I think when Jane Skinner got the daily “Fox News Live” gig, it was a sure sign to Kiran that she will not move up at FNC.

Although everyone here is speculating about another cable network, a competing offer could be from a local station, likely in NYC.

    Comment by Ira — February 15, 2007 @ 8:15 pm

  19. Watch for her to show up on WCBS, they’ll hire anyone.

    Comment by Lemon — February 15, 2007 @ 8:26 pm

  20. #5 is right, kiran may go to another network, but No one will follow. Fox people don’t switch and they will find someone else just as cute and probably from MSNBC or CNN. Remember where Greta VanS. came from.

    Comment by cathy — February 15, 2007 @ 8:30 pm

  21. I think Kiran’s perfect for the Fox morning shows. When they replaced E.D. Hill, they should have used her instead of Gretchen.

    Comment by TBDave — February 15, 2007 @ 8:55 pm

  22. Wasn’t CBS interested in Kiran for their semi-annual revamping of the Morning Show?

    Comment by Charles — February 15, 2007 @ 10:10 pm

  23. Holy cow! I feel sorry for Kiran. I don’t care what anyone thinks of her, it must be terribly humiliating to have this spread over the internet. She’s not just a “TV personality!” She’s a PERSON with feelings.

    Comment by Olivia — February 15, 2007 @ 10:21 pm

  24. Fire the arrogent agent and save your career its Steak or Hot Dog time .

    Comment by mike — February 15, 2007 @ 10:49 pm

  25. Geez how sour the fnc groupies get when one defects. I am hoping CNN will pick her up. Maybe include her on American Morning or Anderson Cooper 360 somehow.

    Comment by Big Dave — February 15, 2007 @ 11:22 pm

  26. Dave, as an “FNC groupie” I am saddened and that hope Kiran does fire her agent! She has always seemed very classy, informed and cordial with both her co-workers and guests of the program. I cannot believe that she and Fox would part, especially under these conditions.

    Comment by Missy — February 15, 2007 @ 11:25 pm

  27. I had the feeling that this was coming. She may be very eager to part ways with FNC, as I believe that she would probably be more comfortable with a more liberal news outlet. Still, I thought that she had a great personality and a lot of talent. FNC should have done more to keep her.

    Comment by california dreamin — February 15, 2007 @ 11:31 pm

  28. Well, if you listen around here Big Dave, I think most of these people would probably believe a piece of chicken on a pole could probably get more people to watch than the O’Brien twins on American Morning, though it’s all about competition.

Anyway, I think if Chetry is gone from FNC, she might find a good calling being an anchor on CNN or maybe some sort of correspondent for AC360, unless she goes local or enters a different work form

    Comment by Chris — February 15, 2007 @ 11:45 pm

  29. I would imagine that whoever picks is going to have to put her through a deprogramming process.

    Comment by elmonica — February 16, 2007 @ 12:17 am

  30. ^

How long did that take you to think up?

    Comment by Lurker — February 16, 2007 @ 12:21 am

  31. It’s true though, I mean, it seems like once anyone turns FNC, they are taught to do just about two things, analysis and talk. “All they do is talk….”

    Comment by Chris — February 16, 2007 @ 12:38 am

  32. If Kiran Goes, I go. FOX is a nice station but is getting to big for its britches. I’m her fan, I’ll go where she goes. Kiran rocks

  33. The tvnewser blog once again does Fox’s bidding in another Fox employee smear campaign. How sad for him.

    Comment by Ron — February 16, 2007 @ 7:36 am

  34. Kiran seems to have found a new home already.
She is on CNN American Morning, filling in for Solidad!

    Comment by malone — February 16, 2007 @ 7:51 am

  35. Er… tvnewser does ALL of the networks’ bidding in employee smear campaigns. Isn’t that what most gossip blogs do for the fields they cover?

As for Chetry’s departure… per the web site of Ken Lindner & Associates, another agent, Kiran was their client at the time of her promotion to weekend F&F host, and per the letter she’s now with William Morris. (FWIW, Lindner himself used to be with WM if memory serves.) Educated guess: her agent at Lindner tried to tell her the limits of her worth, but she got greedy and found a new hired gun who told her what she wanted to hear and tried to get her far more. Fox, which already had given her far more air time and good PR than she ever deserved, finally said “enough” to her demands and cut her loose.

    Comment by David — February 16, 2007 @ 8:02 am

  36. Iam happy she’s on CNN
I cant stand Fox News anymore there bias
is at a all time high with that pathetic comedy
show that’s it. Oouldn’t you hate to work at Fox News
where they tell you how to think and you must kiss
Bush’s ass agree with everything he dose kiss ass

    Comment by Mike — February 16, 2007 @ 8:11 am

  37. Like her or not, Kiran was a huge draw for FNC, and she has a big fan base. Her Yahoo group has thousands of members. I thought she was great on Fox & Friends, and should have gotten the permanent gig over boring & wooden Gretchen Carlson. She was always knowledgeable, personable, and with her exotic features, very easy on the eyes. CNN made a smart move, for once!

    Comment by spiffo — February 16, 2007 @ 8:24 am

  38. Wow, That was quick, Turned to CNN and I see Kiran

    Comment by Lurker — February 16, 2007 @ 8:24 am

  39. REALLY???

    Comment by Anonymous — February 16, 2007 @ 8:59 am

  40. Ira, Jane Skinner paid her dues at FNC for the promotion. Maybe you meant, Kiran got passed over by recent new hires such as, Gretchen Carlson, Martha Mccallum, Trace Gallagher, Julie Bandares, etc. And I’m utterly shocked to see Kiran on American Morning!

    Comment by Terance — February 16, 2007 @ 9:08 am

  41. Smart move by CNN.

    Comment by Big Dave — February 16, 2007 @ 9:47 am

  42. I’m happy for Kiran!

    Comment by Olivia — February 16, 2007 @ 9:57 am

  43. I’m with you, Spiffo. I think Kiran should have been chosen over Gretchen. Kiran is a natural on set and I have seen her do some good interviews with hardball questions to both liberals and conservatives. She would have balanced the F&F hosting team out better. As it is now with Carlson, Doocy and Kilmeade, I feel like the viewers are being presented with too much of a group think scenario with regards to the hosts’ opinions. Having at least one host who is a little more liberal would make it more interesting. The current line-up of F&F weekday hosts are quick becoming boring.

All I can say is kudos to CNN for picking Kiran up. It’s FNC’s loss in my opinion.

Good luck with your new job, Kiran. I do hope the people at FNC don’t treat Chris unkindly for whatever went down behind the scenes between FNC and his wife though. It’s probably going to be awkward.

    Comment by STP — February 16, 2007 @ 10:04 am

  44. You guys see the headline on FTV?

“TV Agent demands Fox Fire Gretchen Carlson”

“He wanted his client to have her job. Fox Responds by dumping agent’s client!”

Not a fan of Gretchen either but that’s kind of low if it’s true.

    Comment by Lurker — February 16, 2007 @ 10:08 am

  45. Wow. I sleep in and miss Kiran’s debut on CNN (although I doubt whether I would have switched to CNN anyway).

Maybe she could permanently host that program, because as cella has often mentioned, those O’Brien’s are so boring.

    Comment by Missy — February 16, 2007 @ 10:11 am

  46. Well, it’s crazy if the agent demanded they fire Gretchen Carlson. Now what in the world would make the agent or Kiran think Roger Ailes would do that just for Kiran? I think it’s sad that Kiran’s name has been drug through the mud, but it almost sounds to me like that was her “I’ve got nothing to lose” move. Obviously she already had the job at CNN and was just looking for a sweet deal to keep her from leaving.

    Comment by Olivia — February 16, 2007 @ 10:20 am

  47. Kiran Chetry work for CNN now.Kian look more happy on CNN.
Kiran sould have got the F&F job not Gretchen Carlson.
Kiran look great doing the stand up segment.Kiran look great sitting in black leather anchor desk.Well Kiran is not a blonda.Gretchen is not a blonde.FNC like the blonde anchor.Kiran did paid her dues at FNC.But some like Gretchen Carlson did not paid her dues and got a F&F Week day job.Kiran got passed over like Patti Ann Browne and other FNC ladies how paid thair dues. And see new hires get a new shows.Julie Banderas was a new hire and got a news show.Julie Banderas did not paid her dues and she a ok anchor.Megyn Kelly got a news show with Bill Hemmer.I really like Megyn Kelly.Megyn Kelly is dressing more sexy now with her leather skirt and leather boots.Patta Ann Browne sould have got a new show too.But see not a blonde anchor.Krian TV Agent may have wanted Gretchen to be fired so Kiran could the host of F&F on the weekday edition.I how it very cold very to have a tv agent to wanted fire Gretchen for Kiran.Well it’s the Tv News Business. All the TV News people have agent. If Kiran happy at CNN.We sould be happy for her.I hope Kiran Husband Chris Knowles will go to CNN too.If I run CNN I would have Kiran vs Gretchen in the morning cable.

    Comment by Jeff — February 16, 2007 @ 11:04 am

  48. ^^ Cnn doesn’t hire phoney meteorologists, so unless Chris Knowles’ brushes off his “reporter” skills you can count that one out. Also I might add, ftvlive isn’t always right. And FNC is notorious for smearing former anchors. TVN has a different “take” on the clause angle.

    Comment by Terance — February 16, 2007 @ 11:21 am

  49. Terance: You are right about Kiran being passed over and add Megyn Kelly to your list of anchors who didn’t “pay their dues?”

In the end, Chetry was basically a sub on the Fox bench and similar to Rita Cosby was not moving up. I hope she is more visible at CNN than Rita is at MSNBC.

    Comment by Ira — February 16, 2007 @ 1:09 pm

  50. Ira, lawyers don’t have to “pay dues” just ask Greta. (which is a joke if you can’t tell) You know the one about, “can’t teach an old dog new tricks?” Well, there are plenty of anchors in the (40+ demo) at the networks who can’t handle breaking news to save their life. (mostly former or current CNNers) So, just because you’ve paid dues doesn’t mean you’ve gained the “skills” needed to do anything more than two minute news updates.

    Comment by Terance — February 16, 2007 @ 1:58 pm

  51. Greta is in a different league than Kiran Chetry. Instead compare Greta to Sean Hannity or Alan Colmes. FNC’s prime-time lineup and on-air people are entirely different than their daytime lineup and people. Greta came in and found her place. Kiran has been bounced around like many have during the daytime. I still haven’t quite gotten over what they did to E.D. Hill!

    Comment by Olivia — February 16, 2007 @ 4:02 pm

  52. She really is not very bright. When she was on, I always switched the channel. Will somebody please advise her to sit up and keep her back straight. Very annoying! She was on CNN this morning with the same lousy posture!!

    Comment by Mary — February 16, 2007 @ 7:25 pm

  53. Laurie Dhue was gone for a long time. I thought she was off of FOX. Then I just saw her the other night. What is her deal?

    Comment by Mary — February 16, 2007 @ 7:29 pm

  54. Mary: Laurie Dhue left FNC to work exclusively on Geraldo’s syndicated show.
With that show cancelled, she is back with Geraldo on FNC.

    Comment by Ira — February 16, 2007 @ 8:45 pm

  55. I’ve always thought of Kiran as a person of decency and fairness, but this whole mess is telling quite another story! Someone must have drilled it into her head that she was “miss important” and that she had the authority to demand that someone be fired just because she didn’t get what she wanted. That kind of attitude is just plain wrong. All I can say is, if she thinks that she’s going to go to CNN and start pushing folks around, she might be in for a rude awakening. There are lots of tough broads over there who aren’t going to be pushed aside.

It’s sad that her career and name has now been tarnished by her prima donna attitude.

    Comment by california dreamin — February 16, 2007 @ 9:18 pm

  56. Kiran on CNN. Yep - I was surfing and I usually skip right through CNN on my way to FNC - but I paused at CNN when I saw Kiran on their 360 degree show with Anderson whatever his name is. I think she made a huge mistake leaving FOX!!!

  59. What ever happened to Loren Green?

    Comment by Cathy — February 18, 2007 @ 9:40 am

  60. I liked Kiran’s work, and wish her well at the left-slanted CNN network. Agree with many others that Gretchen Carlson is kind of second tier.
Also really liked E.D. Hill in the morning, and she is being missed on Fox and Friends.
Hope Chris Knowles stays with Fox, he does a nice job with the Weather. Perhaps he can replace Alan Colmes, who has no clue whatsoever.

    Comment by Robert Cohn — February 18, 2007 @ 5:01 pm

  61. A few months ago Chetry was criticizing CNN for airing video, which she called “disturbing” and “outrageous”, of terrorists shooting a US soldier in the head. Now, upon her hiring at CNN, she seems to have decided that they are “the gold standard when it comes to journalism”.

Ms. Chetry, do you consider CNN’s tendency to air terrorist propaganda the “gold standard”? And, were your words of criticism against CNN back in the fall just an acting job because Roger Ailes told you to say it? Which is it?
