More calls for Imus’ firing…

The Huffington Post’s Stacey Parker Aab thinks Imus should be out of a job…

It is not OK to sit like a coward in one’s studio and speak such poison into the airwaves. I hope, for a moment, Imus might take a moment to sit with the fact that he is in the wrong here, and then take another moment to put himself in these womens’ impressively-hard-to-fill shoes.

So, I’m afraid to say that I still don’t have an explanation for my mom as to why Imus still has a job. Other than the one we already know: in America, no one gets fired for hurting and disparaging black women. Ever.

Thank you, Gregory Lee and the National Association of Black Journalists and all others who have spoken out against Mr. Imus, and have demanded his dismissal. An apology was a start. But it can’t be the end.

Protests ratchet up on Imus…

The AP’s Larry McShane writes about Al Sharpton and others calling for Don Imus to be fired. Don’t read too much into this…yet. If the protesting stays confined to serial protesters and camera muggers like Al Sharpton this story will blow over. If it goes mainstream and you start seeing Imus denounced in Congress and grassroots protesting then it’s a whole new ballgame. We aren’t at that stage yet and I’m not convinced that we will get to that stage despite all the press this is getting (CNN devoted a lot of airtime to this last night during its 10pm newscast).

Unimpressed by his on-air apology or corporate promises of a tighter leash, angry critics of nationally syndicated radio host Don Imus called Saturday for his dismissal over his racially charged comments about the mostly black Rutgers women’s basketball team.

“I accept his apology, just as I want his bosses to accept his resignation,” said the Rev. Al Sharpton. He promised to picket Imus’ New York radio home, WFAN-AM, unless the veteran of nearly 40 years of anything-goes broadcasting is gone within a week.

Sharpton was not alone in his anger over Imus’ description of the Rutgers’ women as “nappy headed hos” during a Wednesday morning segment of his show, which airs for millions of listeners on more than 70 stations and the MSNBC television network.
