Wounder how long this saturation coverage will go on for.
And why did fox on have three FOX NEWS ALERTS from when i started to watching it at 11:30 to now? The Horse in the mud last week had about 8.

Martha is in for Shep tonight
Comment by Wenchie — April 16, 2007 @ 7:01 pm
where is shep????????
Comment by craig gordon — April 16, 2007 @ 7:04 pm
Maybe he hasn’t gotten there yet?
Comment by Noelle — April 16, 2007 @ 7:12 pm
Was this the first time that Brit Hume spent the entire hour with a breaking non-DC story?
And I doubt whether “Red Eye” will be on tonight.
Comment by Ira — April 16, 2007 @ 7:24 pm
Im guessing Shep hasnt made it there yet…Remember we (up in the north east) have been having a weather event while all this has been going on…lots of delayed flights
Comment by Wenchie — April 16, 2007 @ 7:29 pm
Good point Wenchie. I didn’t even think about the weather. It does seem like all the DC people got there already.
Comment by Noelle — April 16, 2007 @ 7:41 pm
Shep is live on FNC right now!
Comment by Brent — April 16, 2007 @ 9:36 pm
I could do without all that cheesy bumper music tho..
Comment by Gutsy — April 16, 2007 @ 9:47 pm
I would not be surprized if “Red Eye” were pre-empted tonight.
Comment by Bob — April 16, 2007 @ 9:47 pm
why the extended coverage into the overnight. anything new is not gonna come out tonight..i see alot of speculating and opining coming on.
Comment by Me — April 16, 2007 @ 10:01 pm
And the vultures are swooping down on these unsuspecting families, students and school…hoping to scoop each other and get the “big get”….
Such ridiculousness…leave these poor families to grieve, NO one needs the like of Greta, Geraldo or Nancy Grace poking microphones in their faces….
Comment by JustStatingMyOpinion — April 16, 2007 @ 10:29 pm
For once I agree with you, Me. But this is Greta and Geraldo’s bread and butter. If they’re willing to cover it for two hours each, FNC will gladly take the ratings.
I was surprised to see Martha McCallum hosting the Fox Report as well. Shep must have been delayed.
Does anyone know who went commercial free first this morning, and who went back to commercials first?
I think Ira is partially right about Brit Hume, at least as far as covering something from a non-Washington perspective. He was off for about a week right after Katrina hit, but then covered Katrina from a Washington perspective; and the Political Grapevine became the Katrina Grapevine for a while. And just last Friday, I saw my first “Fox News Alert” banner on Special Report. Even when he was the first anywhere to announce the Israeli-Hezbollah War, he didn’t call it a FNA.
Right now, the weather seems to be causing some problems on Greta. She keeps going out, but they’ve got Trace standing by at a desk, presumably in New York.

..and fnc has greta and geraldo…geez, send real journalists! BTW, why no post that cnn was first to report the news..and had the most compelling video.
Comment by Me — April 16, 2007 @ 11:02 pm
erljr: Thanks for the background info.
Because I was working in the disaster areas following Katrina and Rita, I didn’t see much of “Special Report” during that time frame.
Comment by Ira — April 16, 2007 @ 11:03 pm
In all honesty, what is the point of the combination of live coverage and continued use of the “ALERT” pulsing graphic throughout the night? In all honesty, repeating earlier coverage would be fine, not to mention more informative than a half-awake Shepard, Rivera, Kelly, or whoever for that matter. Let the anchors sleep and give us the best coverage possible tomorrow when the families might come out and talk, not to mention more conferences and whatnot.
Comment by Chris — April 17, 2007 @ 12:17 am
Me - CNN may have had the first compelling video, but FNC and MSNBC had the same video within an hour. CNN kept bringing back the guy who shot it with his own microphone in front of a still camera - which is weird, because CNN was supposed to have the most “troops” in the region the fastest. Also, as CNN kept showing that video and interviewing him, FNC kept getting more “citizen videos” to add to their coverage.
Chris - I agree that Shep looks half asleep. I wonder why; he’s done long days for other crises in the past, but has never looked so worn out.
Comment by erljr — April 17, 2007 @ 1:30 am
Just to note - I’m up late and just turned Fox on - it’s 2:05 and Greta and Shepard are on with a re-run of “On the Record. No “Red Eye,” which I suppose is a wise move. However, Shepard was just discussing the winds still around from the departing nor’easter and how it’s effecting the airport. In short, there seems to be little additional information to be passed along at this point. Now Greta is interviewing a student who is not saying anything new.
I guess all the networks are going to milk this for all its worth. That’s not to say in any way that this tragedy doesn’t deserve the coverage, but I hope they break the wall-to-wall coverage sooner rather than later because already it seems to be getting redundant. They will have the memorial service and info. on the shooter, but beyond that I don’t see what else needs to be reported.
Comment by FishOil — April 17, 2007 @ 2:13 am
How many anchors do you need in blacksburg? I mean wouldn’t it appear less intrusive if each network sent in a reporter, paid them over time, etc nad then let them have the following week off, to rest? Out of the respect for the familes, why send all ur figureheads, the same goes with cnn. Spud you should make this a poll or something.
Comment by scott kushman — April 17, 2007 @ 2:45 am
erljr, the beginning of last summer’s war did indeed have a Fox News Alert banner on the bottom of the screen during Special Report.
Comment by SuperNoxic — April 17, 2007 @ 4:27 am
Wrong SN. Show me a screen grab. You can’t. I watched SR every day. Alert, yes. Breaking News, yes. FNA, no.
Comment by erljr — April 17, 2007 @ 5:57 am
FishOil, that’s a whole different concern I didn’t even think about, excessive media coverage and programming. If anything, the question will probably be how long will the networks keep this programming going and how long will people watch?

I have been flipping through coverage this a.m.
Kiran and John are doing a good job. Tough story to do on your second morning of your new job. I think Kiran is holding her own.
By far, Shep is doing the best on F&F. I have been glued to his coverage. He is usually so tough and rugged, but at the end of his last segment you could tell he started to get emotional. I’ve never seen that in him before. Usually his emotions come out in yelling, etc. Never seen him get teary.
Comment by jerziegrl — April 17, 2007 @ 8:41 am
I noticed this morning that Fox showed the news crawl during the commercials.
