Tuesday’s Numbers…
FNC swept the daytime and had the most viewers in primetime. CNN won the primetime Demo. Anderson Cooper 360, minus the still trying to get to the USA Anderson Cooper, beat On The Record in both Total Viewers and the Demo in the first hour. On The Record regained the Total Viewer lead from 360 in the 2nd hour but couldn’t take back the Demo.

I think John King is doing an excellent job filling in on 360. As a matter of fact, I now like John King better than Anderson Cooper.
Comment by Ginger — April 18, 2007 @ 5:20 pm
Nah not really…let’s wait for the news cycle to slow down again and see where AM settles. That being said, this breaking news story is great for CNN as it’s creating ample sampling for the “new” American Morning…

Look at the ratings for everything before and after PZ’s 8pm slot on CNN….YIKES! If that doesn’t set off alarm bell’s, I don’t know what will.
Comment by Terance — April 18, 2007 @ 5:29 pm
I’m a little surprised AC360 was the show that topped 2 million for CNN, I would have expected Larry King to have the most viewers for the night.
Comment by lightswitch — April 18, 2007 @ 5:37 pm
it looks pretty bad that MSNBC didn’t get any bump in figures while FNC and CNN did - looks like people just don’t go there for breaking stories.
Comment by Mr A — April 18, 2007 @ 5:49 pm
if you notice, cnn gains the most viewers during the coverage of a big news story. fnc always has its cult members watching. msnbc, what can you say, people knows it doesnt cover news that much, so why go there for a big breakin story?
Comment by Me — April 18, 2007 @ 6:55 pm
Wow MSNBC took a shellacing the day after the massive bumps everyone got.
Comment by Edward Schatz — April 18, 2007 @ 7:01 pm
CNN aired an exclusive with the 2 roommates of the killer during 360, so that might explain the ratings jump.
But I agree with Renee…Soledad has got to be pissed!
Comment by Enquiring Minds Want to Know — April 18, 2007 @ 7:07 pm
u cant gauge the numbers until the big story dies down. i remember several times AM got huge numbers when soledad and miles were on AM.
Comment by Me — April 18, 2007 @ 7:23 pm
Great logic, if you watch CNN your just a normal person interested in the news, if you watch FNC you are a cult member.
Comment by Jim — April 18, 2007 @ 7:26 pm
If FNC doesn’t get rid of Alan Colmes, Larry King is going to overtake H & C.
But then, who is the most visually unappealing - King or Colmes??
Comment by cella — April 18, 2007 @ 7:35 pm
Didn’t Greta only do her usual show last night with the O’Reilly rerun at 11pm ET?
Terance: Remember that 8pm ET there was also “American Idol” so all of those numbers were down.
Comment by Ira — April 18, 2007 @ 7:45 pm
I agree with you completely Cella. I think you should start an online petetion to fire Colmes so that Hannity can do the show solo.
Comment by elmonica — April 18, 2007 @ 7:47 pm
What’s with the cult members garbage?
Comment by tim — April 18, 2007 @ 8:02 pm
Sorry, Ira. I don’t keep track of what time Fox decides to put American Idol on… unless of course its interfering with one of my favorite women. (Emily Deschanel from Bones!)
Comment by Terance — April 18, 2007 @ 8:04 pm
I still say swap Bob Beckle for Alan Colmes!
Although, Hannity and Beckle, doesn’t have a real smooth ring to it.
Comment by ImNotBlue — April 18, 2007 @ 8:12 pm
Terance: Obviously Paula Zahn is not one of your favorite women!
ImNotBlue & Cella: Sorry, but there is nothing wrong with Hannity and Colmes. We don’t need a “Hannity Factor.” Please don’t give Elmonica any ammunition!
Comment by Ira — April 18, 2007 @ 8:35 pm
Ira, I agree 100%. But as far as TV personalities, I think Beckle comes across better than Colmes. He’s less Skelator-ish… more Wilford Brimley… sans the mustache, of course.
And Elmonica doesn’t need any ammunition… she makes it up on her own.
Comment by ImNotBlue — April 18, 2007 @ 9:11 pm
It should be Hannity and Franken.
Comment by Randy — April 18, 2007 @ 9:12 pm
No no no… Franken has three big problems. One, he doesn’t use MAINSTREAM DEMOCRATIC talking points… he uses FAR LEFT talking points, which would alienate a good part of the audience who sits to the left of center, but not quite that far left.
Second, Franken is a comedian, and uses that as an excuse whenever he says something offensive or really outlandish. He also stages a lot of his interviews to embarrass and smear whomever he disagrees with, instead of actually debate.
And thirdly, he is so disliked by so many people, including a lot of people at FNC, that there is no way they would consider putting him on the air.
It might make for interesting television for a while, but it would degenerate into a screaming match, and would quickly become unmatchable.
Comment by ImNotBlue — April 18, 2007 @ 9:21 pm
Franken is a good match foil for Hannity on politics.
Comment by Randy — April 18, 2007 @ 10:01 pm
Franken is a loser.. He’s running for Senate in MN plus BO has a lot of problems and would be pissed if he replaced Combes…I agree with ImNotBlueeeeeeeeee
Comment by Chet — April 18, 2007 @ 10:39 pm
Wow, Franken sounds exactly like Hannity and O’Rielly.
Comment by Steve — April 18, 2007 @ 10:43 pm
Franken, Let’s see.
Two failed t.v shows. A failed radio show. Some movie called ’stuart smally’ that bombed at the box office.
Oh yeah sounds like a ratings bonanza for FNC.
Meanwhile Bill O’Reilly has been on for ten years on FNC, Number one prime show for a lot of those years. Hosted another show for a few years. Still has a radio show that is ranked fifth or sixth last I checked. Once again for how many times in a row, Was number one last night.
Oh yeah what a loser!
Comment by puck — April 18, 2007 @ 10:59 pm
Meant foil, not match foil.
Comment by Randy — April 18, 2007 @ 11:05 pm
Ira, Zahn is such an easy target I can’t resist. She is the weak link in CNN’s night time ratings. Sort of like how Kimberly G. has never preformed to expectations and once again I’ll predict she is this/close to being a legal analyst without a slot!
Comment by Terance — April 19, 2007 @ 7:35 am
Oh Puck, I love how you just zip past all of Franken’s significant accomplishments to compare him to your savior, O’Reilly. Franken actually has a talent for something other than screaming at people on his show.
“Alan Stuart “Al” Franken (born May 21, 1951) is an Emmy Award–winning American comedian, actor, author, screenwriter, political commentator, radio host and, recently, politician.”
“Franken was awarded three Emmy Awards and seven Emmy nominations for his television writing and production.”
“Besides having written five New York Times bestselling books, three of which reached #1[5] (including Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot and Other Observations)..]”
“Several years later, he became the first nationally syndicated radio talk show host to visit Iraq,[citation needed] where he headlined two USO shows while traveling with Russell Burnham, the U.S. Army Soldier of the Year. Franken has done seven USO tours to date, his most recent being in mid-December 2006.”
All from Wikipedia…

Seeing the ratings bump this week, I think this proves that FNC and CNN are truly the two bigwigs when it comes to Cable News, and MSNBC is just a self-congratulating pretender. When “real stories” happen, the casual viewers either increase FNC’s already large share, or pump up Cnn because they remember them from 10 years ago. Msnbc doesn’t register on people’s radar screens.
Comment by jpq1999 — April 19, 2007 @ 10:38 am
Wow, shaun… you really put Puck in his place.
I mean, how could O’Reilly compete with a guy who won emmys for writing SNL (with a whole crew of people)? Oh, wait… THE TWO HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH EACH OTHER!
Well, how can O’Reilly compare to Franken’s 5 NYTimes best sellers, and 3 number 1’s? OH WAIT, BILL ALSO HAS 5 NYTIMES BEST SELLERS… BUT 4 NUMBER 1′S!
But you are right about the USO shows… Franken has done more of them. But I do assume it’s easier to do a USO show… when, you know… YOU’RE A COMEDIAN!
Yeah, great job researching there… you really put him in his place.
(Also, sourced at Wikipedia… because if we’re going to pretend it’s okay for one, I guess it’s okay for another)
Comment by ImNotBlue — April 19, 2007 @ 2:55 pm
INB- i really like when these conservatives, try to define whose far left and who’s in the center, Let me guess you probably think Sean Hannity and Ann Coulter are mainstream, afterall i’ve never heard you complain about them being too far right, however Al Franken shouldnn’t be on tv as he’s too far left. Give me a break.
Comment by Sam — April 19, 2007 @ 3:12 pm
INB - Once again deflecting, weaving and dodging. The point of my post, and it’s obvious I have to plainly state it for people like yourself, was to condense Al Franken’s achievements and career to this is misleading:
“Two failed t.v shows. A failed radio show. Some movie called ’stuart smally’ that bombed at the box office.”
Is it not INB? Honestly, your postings are becoming a joke. You used to make some decent points for your side, now you just like to argue for argument’s sake. Get a grip.
And by the way, he does not have a failed radio show, it was still on the air when he decided to leave to run for the Senate. I doubt Air America would be cancelling it’s highest rated show. Thanks.
