McGuirk on H&C: Update…

The Miami Herald’s Glenn Garvin wasn’t impressed with Bernard McGuirk’s appearance on Hannity & Colmes last night…

McGuirk not only predicted that his and Imus’ dismissal from CBS signals the end of free speech in America, he compared himself to Holocaust victims. “It’s like the off-quoted anti-Nazi German pastor who said, you know, first, they came for the Communists, but I wasn’t a Communist, so I didn’t say anything. Then they came for the Jews, but I’m not a Jew, I didn’t say anything. Then they came for the Catholics, but I’m a Protestant. Then when they came from me, there was nobody to speak,” McGuirk said, loudly, to drown out the sound of the German Lutheran minister Martin Niemoller spinning in his grave.

  1. What BS… he quoted that to say if people don’t start standing up for free speech, they’re going to be bullied by the PC police all over. If you didn’t stand up for Imus, what about when people start trying to get the political broadcasters of the air… the morning show jokers… etc etc.

But I guess taking quotes out of context, is just par for the course for media critics today. Fit the story to what you want to say.

  2. You hit the nail on the head, ImNotBlue - I saw the interview and he was in no way comparing himself or the situation to the holocaust. It was a correct analogy in the context he used it.

Just to add - I am not a big fan of Sean Hannity’s but he was also dead-on when he brought up the point that Al Sharpton had made insulting verbal attacks in the past and he was never thrown under the bus the way Imus and Co. were. The point being - the guy apologized repeatedly and met with the women he directly insulted. He’s been doing this type of show (being an equal opportunity offender) for decades - he gets canned for this remark? It’s like being pulled over for speeding on the 401st lap of the Indy 500.

Glenn Garvin should have listened more closely to what McGuirk was saying, because Garvin is acting in the way that McGuirk is warning about - the pc police in full riot gear.

  3. Bernie speaks for many, many, many more people than you can imagine. This is still America, right? Let both he and the I-Man speak freely. On their worst days they made more sense than most politicians do on their best days. Of course no one could ever call Bernie a nappy headed anything.

  4. I agree with all 3. Bernie and I-man were wrong and they have acknowledged it.I still don’t feel they should have lost their jobs over it. Suspension, fines, but not their jobs. I saw H&C last night and there was someone on last night blaming I-man for everything and saying it was ok for Al Sharpton to expound his hate views and slander. I just shut it off. There is definitely a double standard in our lives and America. Enough is enough, lets all button up and say nothing.

  5. Folks are beginning to catch on that journalists write long articles and really don’t know what they’re talking about. A little research might be in order to get a balanced view on a subject. What Mr. McGuirk said was perfectly appropriate to illustrate the fact that we all better start standing up for freedom because the PC police are indeed running wild.

  6. Anybody who ever watched or listened to Imus’s show would know that he is definitely not a racist.

Every Martin Luther King Day, he played the entire recorded “I Have a Dream” speech on his program.

He gave strong and vocal support to Congressman Harold Ford, Jr. (D-Tennessee) in his bid for the Senate last fall.

Because Carroll O’Connor played Archie Bunker on TV, did that make him a bigot? Of course not. It was a role. Imus’s occasional stupid comments were of the same ilk. To take this one goofy episode and act like it is the sum total of his life and character is grossly unfair.

Imus could do wonders for race relations if he were returned to the airwaves. When he puts his mind and money to a cause, things get done. He could do much more to unite us than Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton have ever done or will ever do. Despite this stupid comment, he was already doing that, bringing children of all races together in their suffering. When have these black ministers done anything to help a white child? There is where the bigotry, prejudice, and racial division lies — not with Don Imus.

  7. I am so disgusted with the media today and how they make a big deal out of everything. I miss the Imus show, it was no more than a public hanging, with Al Sharpton putting the rope around Imus’s neck. God help us!!!!

  8. Imus was fired & yet he still met with the team to apologize. After the meeting the team & Stringer accepted his apology.Stringer then asked Imus if he could help them.He said,”Not now.” Thanks to Hillary, her Media Matters & all her pawns she will be Slam Dunked for this. The drums are beating.I lost my rights to watch my favorite show & the ones most critical of Imus didn’t watch him nor new him & his type of hummor.

  9. I am with Darcey, the media disgusts me. Their onesided coverage of events is nauseating. Lead around by the nose by people like Sharpton who shouldn’t be standing in judgement of ANYONE. Don Imus was crucified by all of you…no due process. What a bunch of cowards.

  10. I am in agreement as well. BRING BACK IMUS AND HIS GANG!!! The spineless media and all involved are absolutely shameful!!! I guess we will see the “real” motivation behind the media - when the ratings continue to free-fall!!! And I for one am very happy to see it - they deserve that and much more for the wrongs they have perpetrated not only against Imus but us viewers. Never once did I see an interview or show speaking the “truth” about the MAN Imus and what good he does!!! Nor did I see one providing a “TRUE” balance to the situation. They just all piled on Imus to please the so-called PC police. They are sooo “disgusted” with what Imus said - YEA RIGHT. “Come on Hilary - I hear Timberland is holding another fund raiser for ya. Maybe you can make it there after you speak to the Rutgers team again on how they should stand up against the degradation against women!!!” Please - how can she say these things without choking - such HOT AIR!!! They have shows on now, to this day, that are saying worse and please don’t even get me started on Sharton and his cronies!!! A bunch of self-serving hypocrites!!! And don’t kid yourselves that the “people” are not paying attention to the polictical hypocrites as well - NO VOTES FROM ME TO ANY OF THOSE CREEPS!!! MEDIA MATTERS??? - NOT SO MUCH!!! WE, THE PEOPLE, WILL HAVE THE LAST WORD!!!
