Soledad O’Brien interview…

The Cornell Daily Sun’s Jonathan Lieberman has an interview with Soledad O’Brien…

The Sun: What inspired you to pursue a career in journalism?

Soledad O’Brien: I was actually pre-med in college, and I got my first job in journalism working for a medical reporter because I was pre-med. I decided not to go to medical school, and I didn’t know what else to do, so I started working for a TV station in Boston. After that, I kept working and working. My pre-med background was really helpful in getting a job.

Sun: What do you think of the current state of media?

O’Brien: In some ways, I’ve been really encouraged by the state of media. I think that it’s very easy to criticize, but what I’ve found is that with “news” outlets like The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, since they’re satire, audiences really need to know a lot more about what is going on in the news. I have found that students that I go talk to — and I talk to a lot to students — are really well-informed and really have positions on important things that are happening in their world that maybe I didn’t see when I was a student.

  1. I have been fairly ambivalent toward Soledad, but could not believe how one-sided was her report on the illegal alien woman in the church in Chicago.

The whole piece was intended to be sympathetic to the woman and others like her. But not once did Soledad bring up the concept of “anchor babies” (which is EXACTLY what is in play here); not once did she ask about the baby’s father, and why he has no responsibility for RAISING AND SUPPORTING HIS OWN CHILD! And when she finally did interview a member of “You Don’t Speak For Me” (the group of Latinos who ARE legal and are against illegal immigration), she truncated the woman’s statement to the extent that she said about two words, not even being allowed to make a point at all!

CNN made it sound as if Soledad was being moved because she is such a great reporter, but the story she did involving this issue certainly proved otherwise.

  4. Soledad’s report on illegal immigration was incredibly one-sided. It’s no wonder the reporters at CNN are so arrogant, since they believe that the world wouldn’t function without them telling us what to think. Oh to be so enlightened !
