The odd couple?

Special mid-week version of the “Question of the week”. For those who watch American Morning, do you see any chemistry between the new anchor team of John Roberts and Kiran Chetry? Because I don’t and I want to know if I’m just missing it…

UPDATE: For what it’s worth, I did see chemistry between the O’Briens.

  1. “For those who watch American Morning,……”

    You mean people actually watch?

The thing is is that the two of them are from two different “schools”. They probably wouldn’t have been friends growing up. So Chemistry is gonna be real difficult there.

  2. So they got rid of Hemmer for O’Brien who is now out and now they have this older guy with less personality then the other two. Niceeeeeeeeeee..

  3. I am trying to stick with American Morning because I do like John Roberts, but Ms. Chentry is a little grating. She tends to cut people off with comments that seem a little dim. They have very little chemistry.

  4. The O’Brien’s had NO chemistry. The new team of Roberts & Chetry have SOME chemistry. You have to realize they’ve only done a few shows in the same studio so far…usually its by remote. So, time will tell how well this works out. But, its already an improvement over the ultra-boring team of O&O.

  5. Not a bit, very boring.

  6. It’s definitely early, but so far I haven’t noticed any chemistry except at times maybe an oil and water mix. Granted, I’m not a regular viewer, but for example, there were some visibly tense interactions between the two during the VA Tech coverage.

Luckily for CNN they have open mic morning at MSNBC so they can afford the mediocrity in the mean time.

  7. I like John Roberts much more as an anchor than as a member of the Press Corps and think he is doing a real good job. Kirin, I just can’t warm up to and call it woman’s intuition, but I see some competition between those two that may lead to trouble.

  8. I actually liked the “O’Brians.” I see no chemistry between the current hosts. In fact, I think Roberts isn’t nuts about his co-host. And Chetry is a little grating. Not sure how the testing of these two went behind the scenes before it was greenlighted.

  9. It appears to not be a good mix - but Chetry is so worthy of watching I keep hoping something will happen - like….FNC rehiring her and dumping Carlsen. Not much hope I guess

  10. I think it’s just that they are seldom in the studio together, and John Roberts is unaccustomed to working as a duo. Kiran’s hotness may also make him nervous, but that’s another topic. LOL.

The O’Briens were arrogant, humorless, and dry as dust. Anything is an improvement!

  11. I love John Roberts. Kiran? Not so much. I don’t get why she’s supposedly a “star”. She’s not THAT attractive.

    Comment by Alison — May 9, 2007 @ 12:10 pm

  12. No chemistry at all. Tension yes, chemistry no. I think they tried to force Kiran down the CNN’s viewers throat. From the other boards I visit, I don’t think a lot of CNN viewers like her to much. They seem to miss Soledad. The pairing of Kiran and John is odd, young pretty women with a old, not so handsome, man.

  13. I think John Roberts should be sitting in Katie’s chair at CBS.

Number 7: One can only hope..Who Knows? Anything could happen!

  14. “I love John Roberts. Kiran? Not so much. I don’t get why she’s supposedly a “star”. She’s not THAT attractive.”

I don’t think they meant “star” in terms of attractiveness. I mean, some actually think Keith O is a star. Nuff said.

  15. Come on now, Kiran is THE News Diva. Who cares who her partner is or what they say or how they feel. Kiran has great legs and a bit of an attitude and that’s all that matters.

    Comment by Bill — May 9, 2007 @ 1:17 pm

  16. Love Kiran, what a fantastic hire for CNN. I now watch the show regularly. Roberts, however, needs better morning energy.

A.M. is right, he’d be better as the CBS Evening news anchor.

    Comment by RC — May 9, 2007 @ 1:36 pm

  17. That little-known personality from Fox is now the host of American Morning on CNN tells one loads about the current management of CNN - they are clueless. Chetry is horrible, horrible, horrible.

    Comment by Paula — May 9, 2007 @ 2:12 pm

  18. Kiran adds nothing. John is a great solo anchor, why does he need anybody else there?

    Comment by Dave — May 9, 2007 @ 2:20 pm

  19. Wow, Lurker, to say someone has less personality than Hemmer is just an insult!

    Comment by Gab — May 9, 2007 @ 2:25 pm

  20. I’ve never been able to watch CNN in the a.m. They’re wasting Roberts now. Agree - CBS ought to hire him to take over for Katie, who is a disaster. I’ve never been a fan of Soledad and now not a fan of Kiran. What’s all the fuss about her - I can’t see it.

That said, I’m not a fan of too many of CNN’s hosts.

    Comment by Susan — May 9, 2007 @ 3:07 pm

  21. Such eloquence.

    Comment by spiffo — May 9, 2007 @ 3:22 pm

  22. Wow, I had no idea that so many disliked Kiran. I may have lost some of my objectivity on the subject, but I was thrilled to see Kiran get to co-host her own show. I’ve liked her for years on Fox…just as I really like Bridget Quinn, Betty Nguyen and Fredricka Whitfield. Though I’m in the minority around here, I enjoy American Morning with Roberts and Chetry. The ratings released yesterday (for Monday)looked pretty good.

    Comment by Objective Analyst — May 9, 2007 @ 3:40 pm

  23. Im with you #22. Kiran is great and is just what the show needed. Unfortunately she is resented by some, and not because of her journalistic skills. These folks are usually female, more often than not. Enough said.

    Comment by spiffo — May 9, 2007 @ 3:46 pm

  24. “Wow, I had no idea that so many disliked Kiran”

Cheap is the first thing that comes to mind.

  25. I know not many people agree, but I personally like John and Kiran. Huge improvement over Soledad and Miles.

  26. It would seem to me that “chemistry” is something that develops over time, so it’s probably too early to tell. And what does that really mean anyway, someone that laughs at your jokes? They certainly seem like an mismatched pair and it’ll be interesting to see how it plays out.

Comment by Enquiring Minds Want to Know — May 9, 2007 @ 6:22 pm

  27. Well as a duo they do not work- i can sense the awkward tension betwen them which is not good. I feel A.C. and Chetry have better chemistry. As for Chetry, she’s a nice looking girl, and she really does try, but i’m afraid she’s yet to find a format outside of F&F where she really fits in.

    Comment by Sam — May 9, 2007 @ 6:57 pm

  28. Chetry stands like she is modeling not telling the news. I like Erica Hill a lot better. But having John on for 3 hours every morning, makes my work morning go by faster. I don’t leave my desk at work (CCTV on the computer). Keep Mr. Roberts, dump Chetry and no, I see no chemistry just tension.

    Comment by Fran — May 9, 2007 @ 7:51 pm

  29. I’m still undecided about the chemistry between John Roberts and Kiran Chetry. I’m not impressed with KC and don’t find her to be in the same class of a journalist as John Roberts. I like both Miles and Soledad and although the chemistry was so so compared to the chemisty Miles and Kyra had when they co anchored during their old show, it really wasn’t that bad and I don’t find this new duo an improvement at all.

    Comment by myview — May 9, 2007 @ 8:35 pm

  30. hmmm-What “school” did chetry attend? Oh, I bet I know! The one that specializes in bar hopping, cig smoking and cheap looking short skirts! At times, Roberts gives chetry a look like he’s saying-what on earth have I done to deserve this?

    Comment by california dreamin — May 9, 2007 @ 9:48 pm

  31. hmm.. i watch for the news and info…not who is anchoring. they do a good job in my opinion.

  32. It’s amazing how many women dislike Kiran.

    Comment by earl fenton — May 9, 2007 @ 11:32 pm

  33. #30 Actually Kiran attended the University of Maryland’s School of Journalism, which is known as one of the best in the country.

    Comment by spiffo — May 10, 2007 @ 9:39 am

  34. #33, Then Kiran better go and get her money back!

    Comment by Noelle — May 10, 2007 @ 11:08 am

  35. #32 Ditto

    Comment by spiffo — May 10, 2007 @ 11:13 am

  36. I’ve watche AM enough times to know that while it is preferable to the inanity of F&F and their 6 a.m. mea culpas, Chetry and Roberts lack chemistry. He’s proven, she appears to be trying too hard. They should have kept Soledad and paired her with Roberts. I also think Robin Meade on HN has a nice relaxed manner about her too.

    Comment by DanOregon — May 18, 2007 @ 2:44 pm

  37. So far I don’t see any chemistry between the two. Roberts strikes me as a immature baby boomer, and Chetry is an over-earnest gen-x’er. No way in hell this works, although, Chetry is a big improvement over S.Obrien, who mumbled her way through many a broadcast. Time will tell.

P.S. The definition of Chemistry is Robin & Co on Headline News. Barely any news content of value, but you can tell the team really digs each other.

    Comment by DevHollett — May 23, 2007 @ 12:30 am

  38. The chemistry is good at times, not so good at others. I actually like KC’s unscripted way of presenting the news. John Roberts is good, but he seems to be arrogant and not accommodating to Kiran’s views.

    Comment by Kevin — May 25, 2007 @ 10:33 am

  39. Not accomodating to Kiran’s views? Kiran is a libby just like Roberts. Now that Chet is at CNN, she gets to work with people who hold the same views that she does. She must have been an outcast at Fox. During the last several months of FOX and Friends, the looks that she was giving Doocy and Kilmeade told the whole story. That conservative environment must have been driving her crazy.
