Intriguing…

Sources said Gregory is intrigued by the idea of hosting the show on a permanent basis

- Variety’s Michael Learmonth last Thursday.

“I am intrigued by this, but I am also very happy doing what I’m doing at NBC”

- David Gregory to Howard Kurtz, today.

Hmmmm…

  1. THe write-up last Thursday was an exageration. This is another tryout, but a more serious one; WFAN is going to simulcast the show as well. What has WFAN been playing in Imus’ place the past few weeks?

  2. erljr: From today’s radioink.com:

“WFAN has been filling its mornings with guests including the McEnroe brothers (John and Patrick) of pro tennis fame and ‘FAN afternoon personalities Mike & the Mad Dog.”

  3. It “an’t going to work”. There are to many I-man fans that will boycott, no matter who takes that time slot.

  4. Hi would one of you be kind enough to give me an update on MSNBC Post-Imus #’s:

For the past several weeks (I believe I’m wrongly calculating) MSNBC has averaged 275,000 viewers over the
total day. During the month of April, MSNBC averaged 334,000.
That’s a drop of about 18% since Imus went off the air – and that’s 18% for total day. Since I don’t see individual show ratings, there’s no telling how badly the Imus’ 6-9am time block is doing but it’s got to be awful.

  5. I personally cant stand him.

  6. Maybe he’s looking to move away from NBC and figures that after crashing and burning, he’ll be released from his contract.

Following the IMAN might not be too bad. After all, look at the success of David Lee Roth, coming in after Howard Stern went to Sirus…

  8. You know they could always get Al Roker or Al Sharpton to do a TV/Radio Show in that time slot. I am sure it would really, really have big ratings, especially if it was food inhalation network sponsoring it. To me they both look like they like to eat….

  9. Curtis and Kuby!!! I mentioned this a few weeks ago, and got less than stellar support for the idea. But these two are fun, and even though Kuby is a far left liberal/communist, he can be somewhat likeable. But of course Curtis is the star (in my opinion).

They are very visual characters, and need a second chance on MSNBC (they were on a few years ago around noon, but were constantly pre-empted by Pentagon briefings and other breaking news). So let’s see how a simulcast of their radio program would do now.

  10. What does MSNBC think, that they can just wave a magic wand and whoever they stick in that morningslot, viewers are just gonna arrive in droves…forgetaboutit! The Imus loyalists have left the bulding, never to return!Dan Abrams, you refuse to answer any of my emails, and thats fine, however if you had the stones, you would sit in that chair for a week, take live calls from America and Canada, listen to what the people have to say and form your own opinion on what has to be done! You are the General Manager of MSNBC…act like one!

    Comment by BernieO — May 14, 2007 @ 1:36 pm

  11. BernieO, Dan Abrams has been reported to still be under his desk, in a fetal position, sucking his thumb, & cradling his blackberry, while mumbling, why me & that peoples loyal to the IMAN is unheard of today….why there’s always tomorrow….I’ll think about it tomorrow….BOYCOTT MSNBC/CBS

  12. “I am very happy doing what I’m doing at NBC.”

By this he means turning himself into the story, begging to go on Leno & Letterman and being the C.O.A.

There is no way in hell Gregory would do this if it was radio only. Westwood One could offer him double what he gets at NBC and he’d turn it down because there are no cameras. The guy is a joke.

    Comment by ChrisM — May 14, 2007 @ 2:16 pm

  13. Wait, what’s all this Dan Abrams bashing? Did you angry Imus lovers (i love imus too) not catch Dan Abrams vigorously defending (like he did the Duke Lax team in his waning days as on-air talent) Imus and waxing poetic at the intolerance of the “PC culture.”

I could tell Abrams was pissed, and he was showing it on his sleeve in the very first few days when Imus was trying to apologize to everybody’s mothers. I suspect the REAL top brass at GE told Dan to cool it. He looked very agitated.

David Gregory will hold on to this spot as long as he keeps it newsworthy and doesn’t try to do the same as the Scarborough morning YukYuk Krewe. Scarborough is creepy in the mornings.

    Comment by kevbo — May 14, 2007 @ 2:22 pm

  14. I am sorry, but again I re-iterate, DAVID GREGORY AN’T GOING TO CUT IT FOR MSNBC. I think DG does a good job as WH Correspondence and fill in for today, but the I-man show is a different story with a different audience People are fuming over I-man, especially when he asked for forgivemenss and the Rev. “Saint” Als said no, fire him.

I keep stating and stating DG had his own show for a while along with many, many, multiple talents, Bill Press, Laura Ingram, Kuby and Curtis, you name them, they all have been on msnbc. Msnbc had been thinking about pulling the plug because of the ratings. At that time I watched them all come and go and the only one that was carrying msnbc was Iman, he had the highest ratings of all of them. It an’t going to happen, it an’t going to happen.

  15. P. S. please excuse all the spelling errors. I sure wish the Blogs would get spell check.

    Comment by cathy — May 14, 2007 @ 2:41 pm

  16. WHY do they think that David Gregory is going to turn things around? The ONLY reason he got good ratings the first time was that they were pimping the Imus situation, which may or may not been a good thing. (I wish they would have had MORE callers!)

    Comment by harleyquinn92 — May 14, 2007 @ 2:46 pm

  17. It’s quite clear David Gregory is never going to make the big time! And that is just peachy keen with me - and I guess a great many others!

    Comment by john — May 14, 2007 @ 3:16 pm

  18. I am bashing Abrams because he is the GM of MSNBC,its nothing personal…as a matter of fact I thought his old show was great sometimes! The bleeding has not stopped as far as morning ratings go for MSNBC,and thats on Abrams watch! Gregory has a big ego,his claim to fame is really the fueds with cancer survivor Tony Snow…David knows he will fail in the Imus slot.Thats why I propose Abrams shaves, helms the morning 6-9 show for a week, take many phone calls, admit the errors MSNBC has made, and give I-MUS his old job back…AMERICA loves a comeback!

    Comment by BernieO — May 14, 2007 @ 3:16 pm

  19. Bring back imus, msnbc needs this for the elections, IF THEY WANT TO BE THE PLACE FOR POLITICS, not for failure
msnbc has the time to bring the I-man back, who are viewers going to turn to? keith olbermann lol…

i said it once i’ll say it again… “Don Imus Was The Voice Of MSnbc, Keith Olbermann Is Not And The Ratings Prove my point”

    Comment by Don — May 14, 2007 @ 3:32 pm

  20. It’s a joke how all of Imus’ so called “fans” on this board came out of the woodwork once Al Sharpton got involved and it was talked about on Fox. Keep it tuned to Fox And Freepers and let the loyal Imus/MSNBC fans weigh in on who should replace him.

  22. kevbo, missed Abrams being upset as I am a boycotter, but my ah, attempt at ah, dry humor emulating Bernie McGuirk’s assessment of the MSNBC brass on FOX Hannity & Colmes apparently escaped you…by the way it’s also my opinion when ah, the #’s don’t go up at MSNBC, at that pt. Abrams can be more than appear indignant & speak out ‘cause more than likely he’ll be looking for ah, a job….that’s the way it is in the corporate world my friend….dog eat dog & downsizing for profits….& news flash, NOBODY can replace the Icon Imus, as HE didn’t care what the brass thought & stated it publicly, can’t see Dick, Joe, or anybody else doing that….BOYCOTTING MSNBC/CBS til IMUS comes home!

  23. elmonica, hardee har har har….thank God Fox is discussing it….Icons should not get kicked to the curb because a race baiter for a living says so….LOYAL FANS KNOW NO ONE can replace IMUS & MSNBC/CBS better start to get it too…NO WAY this story is going away, way too many of us are too old, too experienced to put up with arrogant corporate ho’s who think we’ll buy into the BS perpetuated by Sharpton & cartel….FREE the airwaves & give us back our ICON & will deliver your #’s simple as that, UNLESS ICON were to tell you what he really thinks of your management skills…BOYCOTTING MSBC/CBS til IMUS comes HOME!

    Comment by Ms. M — May 14, 2007 @ 4:11 pm

  24. Where were all these Imus ‘fans’ when he was actually on air. People are forgetting that his ratings were hardly spectacular, and it was only in recent months that he had started to gain on a lacklustre CNN American Morning. Some of you guys need to get over it - advertisers were pulling their money from ALL of MSNBC, and they effectively had no choice.

    Comment by Mr A — May 14, 2007 @ 5:14 pm

  25. I watched Imus for 10 years unless it was a repeat. I am not kidding at one time he had the highest rating of all the shows on msnbc, because he use to laugh about it. I think he may have gone down due to KO, and lets bash fnc and bush, but he had 230,000 people watching him on most occasions. He also got better guests and he also had some top notch music performers on his show. I-man also had a lot of charities. He really was msnbc. Many times the rumors were that msnbc was going to have to pull the plug. They for the most time are not a full time news network.

    Comment by cathy — May 14, 2007 @ 5:47 pm

  26. And Mr A we are seeing the residual effects from the crafty race baiting Sharpton as more talk show hosts are getting the ultimate hosing in the name of decency & also getting fired….all because of race baiters’ new criteria for acceptable language & standards….put MSNBC/CBS between one rock & hard place…can I get a witness, Lawdy, Lawdy, Rev Al’s threatened boycott is NOW their worst nightmare as IFANS are giving them what Al promised…financial reprecussions, in the nations best interests, a legitimate BOYCOTT….BOYCOTTING MSNBC/CBS til IMUS comes HOME!

    Comment by Ms. M — May 14, 2007 @ 6:37 pm

  27. MSNBC and WFAN both forgot something very, very important. Regardless of what your station’s format is all day, in the morning, you want to be mass appeal. This is why, when Emmis took over WNBC and switched it to all-sports as WFAN, they kept Imus. Be mass-appeal in the morning. Even the most hardened sports guy, when he’s just getting up, just wants some laughs and some news and maybe a bit of analysis and conversation, but not too much.

Same with Imus on MSNBC-TV. Let’s solve the worlds problems later in the day. In the morning, be entertainment based and skew occasionally into news, sports, analysis, etc… but, keep the center lane entertainment.

After watching some of these people try to do what Imus did, I have a whole new appreciation for Imus’s ability to know when to bounce from one topic to the next, when something’s run it’s course, how to keep it moving and interesting. To do that takes a lot of skill, and also experience. If they were on something you weren’t too interested in, you knew that in a few minutes, they’d be onto something else you might like better. I miss it. I miss it a LOT…more than I thought I would!

Imus & Co. made it look much easier than it actually is.

    Comment by Dave — May 15, 2007 @ 1:06 am

  28. I will have to agree with you Dave. I hope some of those people who have filled in also realize how hard it is to do Imus’ job, plus keep folks entertained.

  29. Imus and crew were genius at just what makes a good morning show. Darn, I miss it!!

  30. Has anyone noticed the way that Joe S. has been talking to Mika and the other woman on his morning show(morning joe)? He keeps asking them to repeat names and stuff, then says “Oh baby, say it again”, and “I love the way you say that, oh yeah”. It’s really quite creepy and very sexist! They just look at him and roll their eyes! I guess it’s okay to demean woman as long as their white!
Also, last night(monday) on scarborough country, the guy John Ridley that showed up on mslsd after the Imus pile-on, He told Steve Adubado(another analyst) that hes just mad cause his LILY WHITE EMPIRE has seen it’s final days! He also said that no white person can understand racism, and that basically he thinks white people can’t say anything to offend anyone but it is ok for blacks, asians, latinos…to say anything they want and can offend anyone they want with no consequences! What the hell!!! So on this morning show they were talking about it and I really expected to hear some sort of apology for what went on the night before(and I would’ve excepted it) but instead all they did was make fun of Steve, of white people and anything else they wanted.
What is wrong with this network? They fire a very popular host for sexist and racist comments but, the same network allows Joe to demean women regularly and A nobody guest host to demean white people! I also find it funny that Joe can’t even control John Ridley from running his show! John talks all over Joe and the others, finally this morning during the rehashing of last night crap(i mean show), he had to ask John to let him talk! Good job Joe! Joe Scarborough?…conservative my ass!!!!!!!!! John Ridley racist?…. you bet!!!!!! Honestly, I don’t believe that any other morning show on mslsd will ever be competetive, not when they employ the likes of matthews, gregory, shuster, olbermann and Joe S.!!!!!!!!!!!

    Comment by shannon20 — May 15, 2007 @ 1:51 pm

  31. I’m black and I was tired of John Ridley! I jumped up off of my couch and clapped when Steve Adubado called in this morning and told Ridley that he was NOT apologizing to him! (You go Steve!) Why must my people always play the race/victim card? I found it ironic that after Ridley and others had piled on Imus for his comments, that he would come in Imus’ old time slot and make the SAME mistake! He even bragged about being in Imus’ old time slot on the Huffington Post. I think he has been clowning the WHOLE week in my opinion!

    Comment by harleyquinn92 — May 15, 2007 @ 2:19 pm

  32. I find that after Imus In The Morning is gone from MSNBC, that network is completely unwatchable and capable of contradicting itself over and over with mistakes with a David Gregory replacement, Joe Scarborough’s tension with John Ridley, etc. Imus was the ONLY thing I could watch in the mornings for news. I agree completely with Dave’s comment of what made Imus so important to MSNBC, the formula and content of the show, the great musical guests Imus featured, the interviews, the skill and quality of the Imus show, etc. Something good died at MSNBC-TV when it let go of Imus. It will never be replaced.

  33. I have lisyened to Don since 1971 and miss him. Racism comes from the heart and he is no racist. He walks the walk put a black face on the Katrina victims and held people accountable for their actions. A number of other people who say the right thing in public are racists at heart (Geraldo is one).

  34. It is bad enough that David Gregory thinks he can replace Imus, but to simulcast with WFAN, with Charles, Lou and Carlin in tow?? As a loyal fan of Imus, I am more disgusted than ever.

    Comment by cr — May 16, 2007 @ 10:06 am

  35. Instead of trying to emulate Imus, which is getting more and more ridiculous everyday, why don’t they just get the I-Man back?
