Ira, I think of these early debates as more like the halftime show -- entertainment potential, while hoping for no wardrobe malfunctions. ;)

Terence: I compare these early debates with the first NFL preseason game. You want a quick glance of all the new players on the team and the numbers on their jersey but that's about it.

Amused, who are you to decide who should or should not be on the stage? This is America, and everyone who was born here and is over 35 has a right to run for president. Yes, I agree, having people like Al Sharpton run for publicity hurts the overall effort of the party in general, but it was his right to run and if Republicans want to start banning people from running, then go right ahead, but it will be a sad day if that ever happens.

No-chance candidates like Hunter and Tancredo (and Huckabee and Brownback and Thompson and crazy Ron Paul and the other forgettables) don't belong in the debates. With so many people on the stage, the legitimate contenders don't get a real chance to tell us about themselves. It becomes an attention grab for the no-hopes.

No they don't. You would have a valid argument if this was December. But it's not December. At this point in the contest it's fine to have the "chum" along with the "big fish"...

Duncan Hunter and Tom Tancredo are two "no chance in hell" candidates who actually personify everything we conservatives want in a candidate. Maybe their showing in these debates will lift them out of obscurity so that they get recognition among the masses.

I agree with RGL. The dems debate was almost as bad with 8(?) candidates... These "no chance in hell" types need to get off the stage.

I really wish the list of 10 candidates could be whittled down to, say, six, which would mean that those with single-digit poll numbers should volunatarily drop out. This should give the top-tier candidates more time to answer questions and to let voters knows of their positions om various vital issues. Immigration, for example, has not been addressed, and we don't know the positions of whether they favor amnesty or not (except for Tome Tancredo and Duncan Hunter, who are against it.)

Into the not-too-distant future, this field is going to be more crowded with the anticipated entrance of Newt Gingrich and Fred Thompson. Ninety minutes would give those candidates nothing more than sound bites. We deserve better.

Yeah, seems a tad on the flashy side (a big tad). Maybe it will look better on t.v. than it does in these still photos though, I dunno.
