On The Record stays in Ohio…

GretaWire blogs that she doesn’t know as of the blog posting whether she’ll be staying in Ohio to continue coverage of the Jessie Davis case or returning to D.C. (ICN hears sne’s now going to be staying in Ohio)

In any investigation, it is always wise to go back several times: You see things you did not see the first time. While I am obviously not investigating the case, I am reporting on it and I learn more (to report) when I return multiple times. I noticed yesterday for the first time some lights on Jesse’s garage. The lights may be motion detector… I am not sure. I also don’t know if they work and light the area of her driveway. I would have liked to go back late last night — after dark — and check, but work on the show consumed me. Hence I again took pictures, again post them and perhaps you see or think of something you did not when you first looked at the pictures.

  1. The case of Jessie Davis will be added to the lexicon of other similar sad stories, such as Lacy Peterson and Chandra Levy.

  2. I agree with #1. All the while the family of these tragi-drami’s become wealthy because they got the luck of the draw, meaning all the cable outlets got involved in their cases. When is the last time a black, pregnant missing woman EVER had this type of coverage? Or a hispanic or asian? For days on end?? NEVER.
Tell me when the FBI puts up at $10,000 reward for any black, asian or hispanic woman that went missing? Hardly EVER.

  3. Or anyone over the age of 30. Young, white, and attractive are the two keys to getting national cable coverage if your loved one goes missing. If you’re fat, ugly, old, a member of a minority, you’re out of luck. Cable TV won’t be looking for you. You’ve got to be telegenic.

  4. Forgot to add that the ex-boyfriend has been charged in her murder and that of their unborn child. He led police to her body this afternoon.

  5. I agree Alison, you don’t hear a lot about the missing black girl who disappeared while on vacation in Florida. I think there is definitely a discrimination in these cases that get media attention and those that don’t. Very Natalie Holloway.

My heart breaks and my gut just turns over this. What could be that bad that you 1) kill some one period, but 2) kill a woman, carrying your child, who is due to have the baby in 2 weeks. It is just unfathomable.

This guy sounds like a real psycho, forget the fact that he is married but has 3 kids with 2 other women. Yeah, a real winner there.

I hadn’t heard that he led the police to her body. Ridiculous.

  6. I don’t know yet if I’m convinced that the reason stories like this get covered is racial. I think it has to have some sort of juicy angle for the nets to pick up on before they can make it a national story.

In this story, you had a young woman, almost ready to give birth, another kid who eerily says that “Mommy was wrapped up in a rug”, and a boyfriend who happens to be a cop. There are enough elements there to make a good “Made for TV” movie.

The Holloway case was also a juicy story. A pretty, young girl on Spring Break, a trip many MANY college students take, disappears. And the suspects have a really sketchy defense, and parents with government connections.

Additionally, all these stories need charismatic spokesperson to keep the focus on them. Holloway’s mom, was that person… always ready for an interview, with a strong TV presence. This current story doesn’t really have a spokesperson yet… but it’s only been in the public eye for about a week (not long enough for people to lose interest, with new developments every day), and since it seems almost over, it will probably fade away by the end of next week.

Now, I know why people say it’s race, especially looking at the recent “missing person/murder” cases in the media. But I think that might just be a coincidence… with the other factors actually driving the story.

  7. I agree with #6, and would add that with a pregnant woman, people hope and pray for a different outcome than Lacy Peterson. Hence the unprecedented number of people involved in the search.

People have also learned to use the media to keep a story in the news.
