MSNBC ALSO PAID IMUS. IF NOT, THAN WHY WOULD HE SIMULCAST HIS SHOW. I DON'T KNOW IF ITS CHEAPER OR NOT FOR SURE, BUT IF IT IS SO MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE, THAN WHY IS JOE STILL ON THE AIR WITH HIS LOWER RATINGS?

The main reason Countdown is doing bad in the ratings is that his show is boring most of the time. The first two segments are long and the comedians he brings in the last segment are not funny, beside Jeffrey Ross.

People, I agree with your opinion about Countdown needing a format change. Even a tweak may help. He has the same guests and talks about the same things practically every show. The BOR thing got old a long time ago. Countdown needs to be jump-started.

I agree with many above posts. If OBgyn would put somethin' DIFFERENT on and those who may have opposing points of view, such as most ALL other cable news, more people may actually watch. Instead he only cuts down and degrades his "enemies" in abstetia.

Although I personally dislike his demeanor-and BTW BOR and Hannity can be almost as irritating and obnoxious at times but they at least confront opposition- Odourman should take note of our comments or else forever be:

All in all, KO needs to make a change, or he'll be toast. I was thinking perhaps his ratings were diving because of the summer, but I don't think so now. I truly believe he needs to revamp the show, and challenge opposing views 'live'. Clearly you all know I'm on the left, even so, I won't stick around and be bored sick until changes are made. The BOR thing was fun for the first six months. Now it's a vendetta, that is not working. In fact, it's backfiring, as FOX is firing back at NBC, and most likely doing more damage in retaliation. KO and BOR shows are extremely different, but in the end that doesn't matter, the ratings do. And BOR destroys KO in the ratings arena.

Bigred, both Olbermann and O’Reilly talk or talked about their ratings. O’Reilly shows promo about ‘the show that dominates cable news’ every night and talks about his rating at the end of the month, while Olbermann used to talk about his rating when they were in the 700,000 to 800,000, he stop now since his show drop in the ratings.

In terms of individual shows, you can’t compare The O’Reilly factor to Countdown with Keith Olbermann, they are two different news shows. It’s like comparing ESPN News Game time, the Daily Show, the Colbert Report and some C-Span news show to Nancy Grace, O’Reilly or Countdown.

O’Reilly devotes about 2-10 minutes about political news on his shows and sometimes don’t discuses political news, his show is mostly focus about Jessica’s Law, child predators, illegal immigration and the top local news around the U.S. Olbermann talks about political news for about 2-3 segments and the rest are about some tabloid news, Olbermann rarely talks about what going on locally around the U.S. Grace talks mostly about tabloid news, that’s why she dominated everyone expect O’Reilly at 8EST during the Anna Nicole Smith thing and the Jessie Davis, even O’Reilly said the same thing how her numbers jump during the Anna Nicole Smith event.

#5 how can Morning Joe be cheaper to produce when MSNBC didn't even have to pay Imus and Charles to use their studio? With Morning Joe you have to pay Joe, John Ridley, Willie, AND Mika. CBS paid Imus and Charles!

The reason news has become so tabloid is because Americans are fed up with government and are tired of hearing about all of its failures. Paris Hilton, on the other hand, we LOVE to see her ship sink.

Countdown is dominate with political news and like 10 to 15% of entertainment news, etc…Comment by RJ — June 27, 2007 @ 12:36 pm

I use to think that as well, but since I tivo the show and watch it later, I started to notice that in terms of "hard or political" news, he only has 2 segments, which generally run about 18 mins. The rest is literally "entertainment" with an occassional "canned" peice from the Today show.

This happened to Scarborough Country. He use to have a ton more political talk, then it turned into 1 debate lasting about 15mins and the rest was Paris, Rosie, Anna or other celebrity junk.

I think what makes Olbermann stand out, is he does seem to cover certain political stories that do not get very much airtime on other news programs. But there IS serious strinking of this type of political news coverage on Countdown, certainly in the last few months.

Where are all the Olby lovers?

Why would they come HERE, Edward?

It’s because he knows in the arena of ideas, he would get destroyed by any clear thinking person.

bwah. Clear-thinking persons such as those who believe we found copious amounts of WMD in Iraq and that the 9/11 hijackers were mainly Iraqis, perhaps? those clear-thinking persons?

360 has gone to one hour, I bet I’m the only one who realized it.

You think wrong (again), Mary. The blogs are very irate about it and hope that it's temporary.

It's because he knows in the arena of ideas, he would get destroyed by any clear thinking person. It's a propaganda show. The lefties bought into it and finally gave him & MSNBC a ratings bounce.

But when you already know every night the firzt two segments will bash Bush and another segment will bash O'Reilly, what's the point? If you've seen his show once, you've seen enough.

peoplepeople, couldn't agree more. KO must have people who challenge him, rather than the lady from Air America and Musto from The Village Voice. I wonder why KO hasn't pursued this. I always thought Keith was intelligent, just slightly misguided. He comes from the world of sports, he should love an exciting shout match.

The Olby lovers, such as myself are jumping ship because he talks about the same crap everynight. Boring! Get over your fascination with BO. If Keith had Republican's on his show every night, and made an effort to challenge them in live segments, his show would bounce back big time. But it's the same ole same ole.

RJ, maybe you haven't noticed, but it's Olbermann who talks about his competition incessantly. He's fixated on Bill O'Reilly, because O'Reilly destroys him every night in the ratings.

Olbermann is also the one who used to brag about his ratings when they made a mild increase.

They are cable news shows. They're on at the same time. They're competing against each other. That's why they are compared.

And O'Reilly has plenty of political discussions on his show.

Comparing the O'Reilly factor ratings to Countdown ratings to Nancy Grace rating is stupid...

O’Reilly mostly talks about what going on locally, bias in the media, entertainment news (about the impact it can cause in society), etc…

Countdown is dominate with political news and like 10 to 15% of entertainment news, etc…

Nancy Grace is mostly trials and legal issues and Fast Money is business financial.

While Grace is talking about Jessie Davis, Paris Hilton and the Chris Benoit thing, O’Reilly is talking about those three things, with other local news like the fire in Cal, and segments like “body language,” “Miller Time,” etc… and Countdown talks about what going on politically. I don’t think Olbermann talked about the Benoit story and I think he talked about the Davis story once.

Too bad two possible replacements for PZ are having morning sickness... Nancy Grace and Campbell Brown? Perhaps the 1 hour move is to get ready for a CNN Shakeup. IS it just me or is HN's new format stupid? Replaying LK? Headline News is now Headline Snooze.

Last nite (Tuesday) KObgyn ranted over half the show 'bout BO and DICK (as he said it- penis envy?) Cheney.
He should get a life- someone marry him please. Randy???

I think the real story here is HN totally on a roll. Wow! NG, whether you like her or not, is steamrolling. GB is also creeping up in the ratings. But I've noticed PZ is also bringing in good numbers as of late for CNN. They should just combine the two networks and lay all to rest.

360 has gone to one hour, I bet I'm the only one who realized it. This must be the first of the prime program changes that are happening. So do you think that they will cut Anderson salary in half? So does that mean 1/2 of 1 or 2 or 5 or 10? Hey, maybe he will sign yet another contract this year!!! That would make the 4th one this year....cool. Just watch, this will be kept on the downlow.

He didn't go to Madgascar (sp?) either.....hmmmm.

Apparently Imus wad dirt cheap to produce actually. MJ is awful awful awful.

Keith Olbermann still gives me the willies. He gets his talking points from Media Matters and it's gotten really old. I think people are tired of the same old Bush bashing day in and day out. Shockingly, he's not married, is he?

Guess what though, Morning Joe is most likely cheaper to produce that Imus and also cheaper to produce than American Morning. Maybe it just needs to catch on. If they feautured more guests via satellite that could help.

It is so funny to see KO get KO'd in the ratings. If he had people that disagreed with him on his show and got into shouting matches with them he would have so much higher ratings. His show is so boring and left-wing, that it has no audience. Bathtub boy should go back to sports, were he belongs.

Another humiliating FOURTH place out of FIVE finish in total viewers for Keith "Second Place" Olbermann. However, given Olbermann's vast "popularity" among "younger viewers" he was able to escape fourth place in the critical, much loved, all-important, key demo by a whopping 2,000 viewers over someone named Paula Zahn.
