Wednesday’s Numbers…

The story last night was all about Paris Hilton. Some will say that 3 million viewers isn’t a lot considering how much hype this interview got in advance. And it’s true that there was no pre-interview bump for Paula Zahn Now and AC 360 lost nearly half of the Larry King Live audience. And it wasn’t enough for CNN to beat FNC in Total Viewers for the night. But to me 3 million is nothing to sneeze at. It’s more than CNN got for its Republican and Democratic Presidential debates. Which is a sad commentary on the state of mind of the viewing public if you ask me.

  1. I wonder how long MSNBC will give “Morning Joe” a chance to build an audience before it bails.

And, of course, Paris Hilton brought Larry King massive ratings….which reaffirms the networks putting on wall to wall coverage of her and her ilk. Oh well.

  2. Wow, HLN is really on a roll these days. From 7pm to 11pm, all of their programming did very well (and Nancy is REALLY doing well as well).

LKL did very well also IMO…even if he got 4 million, people would say he should have gotten more. There’s really no way to win sometimes. And while AC fumbled 40%+ of LKL’s audience, he was able to retain a good majority of the demo figures which is nice (even though he spent an hour analyzing an 1 hour interview…)

  3. #2, HLN is on a roll during the day and evening. Congrats. to LKL. The interview sucked, but good #s.
Did I miss Dan’s congrats memo to MSNBC for their 4th place #s.

  4. Spud, the spam blocker is on my last nerve tonight. I’ll try this again: Glenn Beck’s numbers have been improving lately. He beat Joe at 9 p.m. I wonder how he will do when he subs for PZ next week.

  5. I thiink they dropped the 25-54 demo and replaced it with a 18-49 group.
If you combined, all cable news ratings together, cable news can never beat Sponge Bob. Cable news has never gotten into the Top 10 of all cable.
It’s a teeny tiny, little isty bitsy minute portion of the viewing public.
Go see who leads the 8PM EST time slots in cable.

  6. That interview sucked big time. I loved it tonight when B O’R showed tape of Paris smoking pot and doing some other drug after the probing question LK asked her if she ever used drugs. Poor Old LK needs to retire. Nothing can compare to his show the night before with the living Beatles and, now that I think of it, the dead one too. No disrespect intended but he tried to ask George Harrison a question and introduced at one point George Hamilton. As far as the Paris interview, after about 15 minutes it was just sleepytime.

  7. #6: FNC has been in the top 10 of all cable every month.

  8. 3+ MILLION viewers for LRL…To watch Paris Hilton…Wow… She’s a really, really big porn star now. I’m sure she and Larry thanks everybody. What the hell is this country coming to…?

  9. LK beat H and C…and AC beat greta.. Seems FNC didn’t lose any viewers..cnn’s extra viewers came out of nowhere.

  10. #5, FNC was 5th in the OVERALL cable ratings recently. Last time I checked, placing 5th puts you in the Top 10.

  11. Hey Anonymous (#2), That’s a great observation about Headline News (HLN). As you said, they have been on a roll lately. I havent’t watched HLN in a while, but from what I see, they have some outstanding talent. 20 years ago, I had my TV tuned to HLN 24/7. When CNN (North America) came along, I swithced to avoid the repeat of the same thing, every half hour. *However, my biggest cable news pet peeve is the fact that the stories, actually the entire 30 mins.,is basically a repeat of the previous show. However, HLN is loaded with talent. I’m not a fan of Nancy Grace or Glen Beck, the two stars…at least as far as the attention they draw. I’m a big fan of Caterine Calloway, Robin, Chuck Roberts, and ….I’m drawing a blank: the pretty brunet newsreader who does the updates on AC360.

  12. #11, you just described MSNBC Live programming… they repeat the same crap every hour, it’s especially noticeable on the weekend… if you watch all 4 hours of Alex Witt, you will see the same stories, over and over again… not only that, but if there are spelling mistakes in the graphics… those repeat too because the producers are too lazy to go in and fix the mistakes once the copy is written.

  13. “I havent’t watched HLN in a while, but from what I see, they have some outstanding talent.” “I’m drawing a blank: the pretty brunet newsreader who does the updates on AC360.”

Duh….her name is Erica Hill and she’s not pretty….all those gums and that horrible hair weave.

And if you don’t watch, how do you know so much about the “talent” they have or don’t have? Don’t you have someone’s termination papers to sign today?

    Comment by Mary Snow — June 29, 2007 @ 8:51 am

  14. Mary Snow, I am the resident expert on “hair” and rest assured.. Erica Hill doesn’t possess hair extensions!

  15. Depressing to know that many people watched the Paris Hilton interview. As long as viewers keep rewarding the news channels( in this case CNN)for dishing out fluff pieces, they’ll continue to do it.

    Comment by myview — June 29, 2007 @ 11:51 am

  16. I’m now anxiously awaiting those end-of-month CNN press releases touting spectacular ratings growth (especially compared to Fox and MSNBC) on the basis of the spike for one show.

    Comment by Ira — June 29, 2007 @ 12:15 pm

  17. HLN is doin’ a lot better cause it’s wising up to the fact that a “channel” needs a diversity of opinions, ala the Beck entrance. Unlike MSNccp HLN is learning something from FOX. Beck beat Crissy-Matt for 5th? day in a row. Matthews is not QUITE is stupid as Odourman-less and I forsee him putting on more “conservative” guests- only if he’ll let ‘em talk!??
