Scotland Terrorist Attack…
All the networks have been wall to wall with the terrorist car bomging/attack at Glasgow International Airport. Post your coverage reactions here.
MSNBC was first to end coverage at 7pm after Alex Witt and David Shuster alternated coverage throughout the day.
Fox was the first network with a live reporter from Glasgow. Sky News’ Ronda Dougall was on at 1:15 ET. FNC had Catherine Herridge, Jamie Colby, Greg Jarrett, and Geraldo Rivera anchoring coverage throughout the day. Rivera said that coverage will be live tonight which apparently means that Martha MacCallum’s Princess Diana doc won’t be airing tonight. Bill Hemmer is on his way to London and will be reporting from there tomorrow in a 2 hour Fox News Live at 3pm ET.
CNN was using Sky News for coverage early on since they had no one there at the time. CNN had T.J. Holmes, Melissa Long, and Susan Roesgen were anchoring coverage. On Monday, American Morning will be originating from two locations with Kiran Chetry in New York and John Roberts in the UK.

Don’t forget Catherine Herridge…she was anchoring this afternoon as well.

Rivera’s show has mostly been about other stories, like the Benoit murder/suicide and now he’s talking about the murder of the pregnant woman which was news last weekend.

The Diana thing is on FNC… they are running an alert at the bottom with the headlines.

Looks like FNC finally went to tape, their running the MacCallum-Diana special at 6:00 PM PT. If anything, this is an actual important preemption, but another week without an edition of Fox News Watch. Looking at it, 6:00 PM PT and everyone is on tape: FNC with the special, CNN w/ King-Beatles, and MSNBC with some documentary.
Personally, I watched MSNBC during most of the coverage and they did a pretty good job, though I occasionally jumped over to CNN and they did alright also. If anything, at least the network’s are continuing live coverage since probably nothing would be breaking and they would only be repeating information, such as FNC with running an ALERT banner w/ information during their special.

Was Hemmer always going to be going to London, to cover the first bombs for Americas Newsroom? Wouldnt suprise me if he was, as him and megan seem to have been on the road quite alot.
Also they never had the “flashing” fox news “alert” on when the story was braking. They had “Fox News Alert” written as a title in the noraml graphics box. Seemed a litte odd!
Geraldo was very poor covering this. I was expecting (and hoping) for two hours solid.

Last time Hemmer was out in the field was when he was in London covering the military hostages…He was on vacation this past week so I dont think going to London was originally in the plan book

I’ll be watching Hemmer tomorrow. I always like his in the field reporting.

Craig, now that I think about it, I think it had to do with the network having to be able to cover the lower third from their sister network in Europe, Sky News.

Can someone tell me why CNN was using Sky News coverage, Wouldn’t Sky News give it to their sister Channel Fox News. If they are competiters? And fox talked a lot about the coverage from Sky News, so why didn’t they use it.
Comment by Vito — June 30, 2007 @ 10:09 pm
Vito, MSNBC also sourced information from Sky News in the L3 and what they talked about. If anything, the network probably just made the decision to make their footage and information universally available.

ITV had reporters doing live interviews on CNN and MSNBC.

I found it interesting that CNN was using Sky’s video. But, I find it more interesting how FNC usually “muzzles” the Sky anchors so we only get FNC’s pov on matters. With that said, I do realize FNC sometimes uses Sky reporters..

FOX had the best coverage. They already have people on the ground there plus Sky News. When is Bill Hemmer getting there? I love that man!

I was pleasantly surprised how well Melissa and Susan did on CNN…thank the heavens that Fredrika was away — that would have been an “ummm-ing” and “aaah-ing” nightmare. I’m sorry, but she could not handle breaking news if her life depended on it…

Eh, I’d have to disagree Noelle, I liked MSNBC’s coverage the most during the crisis. If anything, their coverage was right down the center and the in-studio chat was well done.
Comment by Chris — July 1, 2007 @ 11:45 am
Okay, Bill Hemmer was just on.

Hey, will Olbermann consider these real terrorist attacks or will he deride them as he has previous terrorist threats?
Comment by Alison — July 1, 2007 @ 4:02 pm
Hey Alison
I think Olbermann will say the Brittish Government did they, to keep support for the Iraq War.
Also i think Bill Hemmer has been amazing today! All over this story and dippinng into sky news when the news is breaking. Also he said they have “exclusive” access to Sky News. Maybe a reference to CNN using Sky News yesterday?
Comment by craig gordon — July 1, 2007 @ 4:12 pm
I was distracted, but I believe I just heard some guy named “Bill Durodie” tell Hemmer that it could be white, social conservatives that are responsible for this latest attack. Hemmer is keeping it together, and thankfully had to go to the Sky News correspondent. This Durodie character said this even though we’ve already heard the demographic of these latest attackers! Hemmer is a class guy and handled it well.
And Alison, this guy will probably be on Countdown tomorrow, because he actually said that we’re overestimating the damage these guys could have done, giving them too much credit!

Alison, kindly keep that unrelated KO talk on another thread. Thanks!
Comment by Terance — July 1, 2007 @ 4:52 pm
We’ll see how unrelated it is on Monday, when he either (a) doesn’t report it… (b) says it wasn’t a big deal… (c) somehow blames Tony Blair and the US for this… or (d) calls in sick, and spends the week back in the tub, so he doesn’t have to report it.
Comment by ImNotBlue — July 1, 2007 @ 5:25 pm
LOL Missy, I saw that too by Durodie. I couldn’t believe what I heard. I just shook my head.
I love Bill Hemmer. Did I already say I love Bill Hemmer? LOL

Sky News is owned by News Corp.
Comment by Wenchie — July 1, 2007 @ 7:06 pm
Oh yes, MSNBC had the best “un-muzzled” coverage. Especially the report about one of the Scotland bombers being dead!
