  2. Yeah!! The Special-Ed comment finally moves Orangeman back into second place… for one night. Too bad he still finished WAY behind every single FOX show, including Bill O’s rerun.. as always.

    Comment by bigred — July 5, 2007 @ 7:16 pm

  3. Well Olbermann’s “Special Comment” did manage to eek out a 2nd place finish for him for the night, but those are hardly huge numbers by any means.

  4. That Special Comment on Tuesday didn’t boost Olby’s numbers that much from Monday; still a low demo turnout. Bet he thanks God for YouTube!!

  5. I’d agree with #3…not to burst Slobberman’s bubble, but less than 200k in the demo despite the hyped up special comment ain’t too hot. But on the other hand, looks like numbers were soft across the board. Maybe he should have saved it for when people were actually watching TV…

  6. Ok KO that didn’t help so how can you top calling for Bush to resign?….I got it!!!

On your next “Special comment” call for the assassination of Bush that should really help your ratings and make you a even bigger hero to the Daily Kos,Dem.Underground and Huffington post wing of the DNC.

  7. KO was beat out by an O’reilly rerun. How can this man even look in the mirror?

  8. What’s surprising is how much of Countdown’s audience Dan Abrams was able to maintain.

  9. Must say MSNBC showed some decent numbers on Tuesday. Olbermann did well, Joe in the morning did well, as did DA. Why does it always seem when MSNBC has a decent day, which there is no denying, that all of you just are completely torn in two by it??? Does it hurt ‘that’ much? My gosh.

  10. The thing about Olbermann’s special commment is that he seems to have boxed himself in…..once you call for the resignation of President Bush and VP Cheney, what else do you base a “Special Comment” on? Sure, he can continue to rail against the Iraq war, but once he has called for the resignation based on his litany of reasons, where is there to go to next? It’s like a sports columnist doing an op-ed for an NFLhead coach’s firing, and following that up with an op-ed about his play calling on third downs. Once you’ve stated a case for dismissal, anything else comes off as rather insignificant.

  11. PeoplePeople, we know you work for MSNBC but really, are you mainlining the kool-aid or do they pay you to come here and spin these really lackluster numbers?

  12. Truth and Consequences: Special Comments on the Bush Administration’s War on American Values (Hardcover)
    by Keith Olbermann (Author)
    List Price: $25.95
    Price: $17.13 (Amazon.com)
    Release Date: December 26, 2007

#10 With a forthcoming book (with that title) I would say we can look forward to plenty more “special comments.” I doubt Olbermann will be “boxed in” from coming up with material for his forthcoming “special comment” book.

  13. Oooooooh, but according to the Olbermann fan at TVNewser, Countdown actually got 50,000 more demo viewers!!! Any more questions about why Brian Stelter began using Live Plus numbers without explanation?

  14. Any more questions about why Brian Stelter began using Live Plus numbers without explanation?

Umm, maybe, like me, he’s interested in how many people watch the show? If you’re an advertiser, *then* you should probably go just by the live viewers, since those who tape the show generally skip the ads. (& if they had a way of not-counting anyone who got up to do stuff during commercials, you’d probably want them excluded, too.) But I’m not an advertising guy. I’m interested in how influential shows are, how many people are watching them. For those purposes, it doesn’t matter whether they watch at 8, or later, when they have the chance. So, LivePlus seems the right measure. Of course, then, I also don’t care about the demo, since that’s a category that’s drawn up for advertisers — for whatever reason, advertisers think it’s best to reach viewers in that age group. So, what’s really strange is that Newser gives you LivePlus, as if you were interested in total influence, but then gives you the demo, as if you were an advertiser.

  15. On Olbermann’s ratings…
While Nancy Grace had a very good month in June (as she can be counted on to have whenever one or more of her kind of stories becomes hot), and took second in the 8 o’clock time slot in the demo for the month, Olbermann took second in the time slot in overall viewers for the month. (See: http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/original/june07ranker.pdf ) Taking a broader view and looking at the whole second quarter of ’07, not only did Olbermann take second in the time slot, beating both Paula and Nancy in the both the demo and overall, but much more importantly, he continued his meteoric year-to-year increases in ratings, boasting (and, yes, he’s certainly vain enough to boast!) a 48% increase in demo viewers over his ’06 second quarter, and a whopping 67% (!!!) increase in total viewers over ’06. For comparison, O’Reilly’s increases were 16% in the demo and 7% overall. (For the ’07 vs. ’06 Q2 comparisons, see: http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/original/q207vs06.pdf ) Those kind of year-to-year quarterly increases are the kinds of things that could earn Olbermann another big raise. Funny, reading the comments on this site, one would think he’s doing poorly…
