CBC Institute/FNC Debate: Ramifications…

The Politico’s Josephine Hearn writes about the ramifications of an Obama/Clinton/Edwards/Richardson pullout from the FNC debate and what the next steps might be… (via TVNewser)

But organizers, including prominent members of the black caucus, are not ready to admit defeat. They still hope to entice (or shame) the front-runners into attending and, failing that, to devise an alternate format to add zest to the show beyond the lengthy discourses of Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. (Del.), Rep. Dennis Kucinich (Ohio) and former Sen. Mike Gravel (Alaska).

“We’re moving forward no matter what. We’re definitely having a debate in Detroit in September,” said CBC Chairwoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, who serves on the institute’s board and represents Detroit in Congress. “We may change the format. We might have more than just the presidential candidates,” she said.

  1. so is it safe to say, if any one of the major three were to be elected they couldn’t represent the right? something wrong there!

  2. besides I’d like to hear much more from that “not serious” candidate Gravel, me thinks the race should be between he & Paul, as they appear to me, to be the only ones ready to seriously discuss issues, not sound bytes & spin.

  3. After NBC gave AlGore all that unchallenged airtime this weekend the charges of bias against FOX just seem silly and sillier.

  4. I think it’s hilarious that while the Dems are boycotting FOX and the libs are blabbing about how “irrelevant” the channel is becoming, they post dominant ratings again for the month of July…. ranking 4th among all cable channels.

Again, the boycott helps w/ their fringe left base, it will hurt everywhere else.

  5. #4 - I agree that the boycott only plays to the fringe left of the party. I know plenty of Democrats who I consider to be moderate and all of them think the whole thing is some sort of publicity stunt.
I don’t think the top tier candidates are hurting themselves very much, but this will give their Republican counterparts some ammo to use against them (if they are afraid to face Brit Hume or Chris Wallice, then how are they going to be expected to face a dangerous world leader if the situation presents itself?).

After thinking about it, it will be good to hear more from the “lower tier” candidates. The media has basically written off the 7 candidates whose last names aren’t Clinton, Obama or Edwards. Just to point out - one of the most qualified candidates in the Democratic field, in my opinion, is Senator Biden. So this will be a good opportunity to hear more alternatives.

Just to add - it will be interesting to see if any of those who show up go out on a limb and take a jab at the absentees for not showing up. If so, I hope it’s a Mike Gravel tirade.

  6. It’ll be good to hear my favorite Democrat,Joe Biden, get more airtime. I’ll be watching.

  7. If the Democrats hope to have a chance in 08, they need to stop letting their decisions be driven by the folks over at DailyKos and MyDD. The simple truth is that so far the FNC debates have been the best run and least biased of the lot, and I’d be wary of voting for anyone who refused to appear at any legitimate debate due to hype and pressure from fringe elements in their party.

  8. #1, just like the past 6 years the Republican held Congress and Senate, and Bushy/Cheney at the top represented the Democrats in the country. Ahhh, you see. Open your eyes.

This entire FNC debate is now just a game of chicken. Who’s going to flinch first. I think if the lower tiered candidates have their own show for 90 minutes it will be hilarious! Can you imagine the jokes about the no-shows? At one point, I thought if some of the candidates broke rank from others to do the debate, it would be bad for the no-shows, now I think it will just be seen by most (except the 3 million FNC viewers, barely one percent of the country, and mostly living in trailers who probably didn’t make it past 8th grade anyway, and thus don’t know what a ‘general election’ is anyway) that the Democrats are taking a stand against a completely biased ‘news’ organization. What’s this talk they’re afraid of Brittle Hume, and Chrissy Wallace? Flaccid. Boring. Monotone. Oooh, scary.

Furthermore, don’t use the excuse FNC viewer hacks that you ‘want to hear’ what they have to say. Please, just like you ‘want to hear’ what CNN and MSNBC have to say, but you don’t watch. You are all just a bunch of hypocrites, watching FNC all day, needing something to complain about. Hows the Anna Nicole Smith doing over there on FNC? Still interesting. You know she died?!?

  9. PP, yes actually I do want to hear what the “lower tier” candidates have to say, as I do get tired of talking heads at news agencies telling me who is viable or not. the little I have heard from Gravel & Paul I like as they seem to address the issues of interest to me, and both appear to not march to their respective parties drummer. something this country could use, independent leadership. As well, PP, I don’t spend my days watching any form of television, as I view it, as an instrament of the devil, & your warm delivery his messenger. And I guess, that ANS demise was all her own fault eh? No shared responsibility there either.

  10. PP, your douchebaggery knows no bounds.
