O’Reilly on Zahn…

Paula Zahn made Bill O’Reilly’s most ridiculous item of the day last night. And I give O’Reilly chutzpah points for working in a dig at NBC into a story that doesn’t even concern the network…

Time now for the most “ridiculous item of the day.” One of our competitors — CNN’s Paula Zahn is leaving that network and I’d just like to say that Ms. Zahn did a nice job with her program. It was very professional. CNN, in stark contrast to the dishonesty at NBC News, is generally a classy outfit and we enjoy the competition because it is honest. I hope good things happen to Paula Zahn. If they don’t, it would be ridiculous.

Long Beach airport evacuated…

The cable nets jumped all over the news that the airport at Long Beach, CA was evacuated on suspicion of an explosive device. FNC was first with the story at 12:52 followed by MSNBC at 12:57 and CNN at 1:00. FNC provided live images of the evacuation with the help of affiliate KTTV. An hour later, the FNC interviewed TSA spokesperson, Jennifer Peppin, who confirmed that what had been found at the airport was actually a handheld game board and not an explosive device.

CNN breaks new Tillman news…

This morning on American Morning, CNN’s Jamie McIntyre reported breaking news about the consequences some military leaders are facing in the death of Army Sergeant Pat Tillman (McIntyre received an Emmy nomination this month for his in-depth reporting on the circumstances of Tillman’s death). Transcript follows…

KIRAN CHETRY, CNN ANCHOR: CNN exclusive. This morning, new fallout in the friendly fire death of Pat Tillman. A highly anticipated Army report will slam a former general and what he knew about the NFL star’s death and what he refused to tell the family, on this AMERICAN MORNING.
And good morning. Glad you’re with us on this Thursday, July 26th. I’m Kiran Chetry.

JOHN ROBERTS, CNN ANCHOR: And good morning to you. Im John Roberts.

We begin with breaking news this morning.

CNN has learned exclusive new details in the investigation into the death of Army Sergeant Pat Tillman. The former NFL star was killed by friendly fire while fighting in Afghanistan in April of 2004. The military has been accused of covering up the incident. Our senior Pentagon correspondent Jamie McIntyre, who is nominated for an Emmy Award for his coverage of the death of Pat Tillman, has uncovered new information this morning and he joins us now live.

What have you found out, Jamie.

The hazards of Live TV: #24,887

More lower third troubles. FTVLive has a screen grab from yesterday’s Alberto Gonzales testimony where Republican Senator Arlen Specter was misidentified as a Democrat by FNC. Instead of the (R) after his name, there was a (D).

You’d think FNC would be more vigilant regarding this sort of error after the Mark Foley incident last year.

Schonfeld on the numbers…

Reese looks at the recent ratings…

The Cynopsis numbers have just come in and things seem to have changed. MSNBC now has more prime-time viewers 25-54 than CNN does. Those numbers have been holding for the past three weeks. While MSNBC boasts publicly about that, they also have 43,000 more 18-49s than CNN and in the youngest demo, 18-34, they beat both Fox News and CNN by 2:1.

I’ll bet it’s Keith Olbermann drawing younger viewers to the 8PM time slot who accounts for MSNBC’s better showing among younger viewers. Campbell Brown is now replacing Paula Zahn at 8PM on CNN. Zahn could still improve the morning show where she did so well a few years ago. The woman who made the Zahn shift has been replaced. The man who replaced her is gone, too, so it’s easy for the current people to clean up other people’s “mistakes.” Unfortunately it’s Paula Zahn who takes the fall.
