MoveOn.org vs. FNC: Non-story?

AdAge’s Ken Wheaton blogs about MoveOn.org’s “campaign” against FNC…

Funnier still is that MoveOn, until now, has been unable to get much media coverage — unless one counts The Huffington Post and DailyKos as the sort of media that’s going to move the masses. Both of those, by the way, are part of this little coalition of speech police, so that’s kind of like getting recognized by your parents for a job well done.

Now the coalition, unable to accomplish much on a national level, has gotten media attention for declaring its intention to monitor local businesses that advertise on Fox News.

That will really hit Fox where it hurts.

Never mind the complexities of buying ads on cable TV — note to the coalition, local cable buys aren’t show specific so attacking Joe’s Deli for advertising on “O’Reilly” might be a little more than silly.

  1. I can’t tell, were they Move on, hoping with their announcement to get some traction? Look at me, Look at me, don’t forget about me! Daily KOS has been in the news but not so much Move on because no one is responding to anything they have been doing? Michelle Malkin, was blogging about Jet Blue and Kos and O’Reilly brought up the Jet Blue-Kos thing and I think he brought up Hillary Clinton planning on speaking to the Kos crowd..O’Reilly thought it was a bad political move. Was it for attention (Move On) or did they not expect the backlash, that came from their announcement to monitor FBC, make a list and go after a network’s advertizers? I can’t be the only one who doesn’t like the Speech Police.

  2. Give me a break, if you don’t like FNC, turn the channel. How dare Move on . org or anyone else try to tell us what we can watch or where we should shop. If this happened, I would boycott Home Depot and anyone else that could be that easily pursuade.

They aren’t attacking anyone for advertising on O’reilly, they’re asking them to stop advertising on FOX NEWS. And in case you were wondering, yes, local cable buys are channel specific, and in some markets, they are indeed show specific becuase you can do the buy by “time slot.”

Criticize the effort if you want…but at least get your facts straight.

  4. I don’t see this being successful, I think it would backfire. They are going to call up (fictious) Acura of Atlanta and tell them not to advertise on Fox News anymore - the highest rated cable channel? If I was Acura of Atlanta ad planner/media rep, I would laugh in their face. This is so babyish. Grow up and move on.

  5. This is one of the most execrable things by those damn liberal hypocrites. They cannot compete, O’Reilly constantly punches them, and now they want to wallow in the mud with this below-the-belt tactic. What companies would want to move on to programs from CNN and MSNBC with their paltry numbers? Piss on these pea-brained rascals!

  6. O’Reilly’s issue with DailyKos.com is why would JetBlue want to be affilated with a site where posters want Tony Snow’s cancer to come back, etc. There are people that I don’t like, but I wouldn’t wish them to be (re)diagnosed with cancer.

I don’t care about liberal blogs or anything, but hate filled blogs - that’s something different.

  7. Anon: For every local or national advertiser that might stop advertising on O’Reilly or FNC, there are 10 waiting to get in.
